Hey, first post here. I'm a relatively new player to EU.

Anyway, the other day something weird happened. I had no rebellions, playing as Austria, but had annexed Thuringin and Wurtenburg. Then, all in day, a rebellion starts, rebels take all of my provinces, Thuringin declares independence, and my government is broken. This all happens in one day, game time, so I have no chance to react. Then, about 20 years later, the same thing happens again, and Wurtemburg declares independence. Frustratingly, the de facto wars with the new countries also automatically ended, so I couldn't reconquer them for five years as we had a peace treaty. This is an error or something, right? Anybody else seen this?

It is possible that it was a civil war. That event makes many of your provinces rebel, if you are unlucky many enough (half including capital) rebel successfully (taking control of fortress by rebellion) making your goverment fall which results in possibly loosing some provinces to newly created nations and loss of many victory points.

And when your goverment falls all provinces held by states you are at war with go to those states and all wars are ended, and this includes breakaway states. So it is not a bug and I have seen it before, but never so harshly for me. (But I have heard of it ending like that often enough.)

Civil War seems to happen more often if you have already had one during the same game - that is probably just a part of the usual "same random event repeats" that is part of the parcel as far as EU1 (and to some extent EU2) is concerned. Avoiding Civil War is impossible, but you can reduce the risk by keeping your stability high, not taking extra stab-hits while on low stab and keeping rebellions and revolt risks under control. And if you had one, save the game, exit the program and then restart the game and carry on from your save to clear the Random Number Generator ;)
