Civilization is about as open-ended as it gets in terms of historical strategy. What do you think about the sort of partially-directed games, like the ones from Paradox? Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, and so on.

JS: I love those games. Hearts of Iron was actually one of the only games that was able to pull me away from Civilization for a little while, and I really enjoyed it. In some ways, it captures that same sense of being in charge of everything. You kind of have a pre-made setup, but from there you're in complete control up until the end.

That also touches on the same desires, I think. They're a little bit more hardcore and a little more focused on the historical side of things, but it's still something that I think is great. And I still play it, so... [laughs]

Nice words, good to hear. :)

We are HARDCORE weee... :D

A confirmation of what I already knew HARDCORE !!

I can agree with him. Civ IV and EU3 are probably my most played games. They're different, but probably serve a similar taste. :)

Bought Civ IV on release... Have tried over and over again to play it but I just can't find it funny, challenging or anything similar to how I feel about Paradox games (especially Eu3). So guess I'm more hardcore then you ;) :p :D

I've never got into Civilizations. It all just feels too abstact and unfocused for my tastes.

But I kind of like the attitude devs are having when they're talking about Civ V, so I might give it a chance later on. Maybe it turns out good, or not.

I used to be a HUGE fan of the Civ series, spent all my time on Civfanatics forums. But now that I've gotten into Paradox games, I can't go back. It does feel very abstract, and doesn't give you the sense of control EU3 and the others give. Plus I don't approve of 2k's marketing methods or their copy protection choice. Their Steam only announcement turned Civfanatics into a very argumentative place. That's why I now reside in the much friendlier Paradox forums, where fans can actually communicate with the developers.:D

What got me totally off Civ was actually Hearts of Iron II, that was in 2008. I only went back to try Civ: colonization briefly.

The community should celebrate!:D

We... are... HARDCORE!! :D

Naturally, I cannot let such a taunt go by unchallenged or my fragile hardcore ego would be hurt beyond repair. So, I also happen to play Dwarf Fortress. *gasp*
That should make me sufficiently hardcore again.

Cool to see the recognition. Civ and "EU" (including HOI, Vicky, etc.) are the two great historical series IMO -- Civ being the fantasy sandbox variant, and EU the serious hardcore choice.
I have been enjoying both series since I first discovered them (CivII and EU1 respectively).

I used to be hardcore.

Then I switched to Dwarf Fortress!! :D:cool:

I'm getting hardcore because of Paradox. I was a big fan of Civ (even CivIII) till I discovered HoIDoomsday and so on. Now I'm enjoying AGEOD and Matrix games... but not at Paradox level.

I'm not too interested in Civ5 actually. I prefer speculating on which will be the next Paradox release (CK2? A new series, perhaps?) and when we'll be enjoying next expansion (whatever).

EDIT: Yes, I'm a fanboy... Difficult not showing as one after having played Vicky2 demo :)

Jon Shafer is a great designer and a nice guy. He used to be pretty active on this forum back in the old hoi1 days.
