Hello Stellaris Community,

My name is Davide, and I am the Product Marketing Manager for Stellaris. As you may have heard, the Grand Archive Story Pack will be released on October 29th!

Today, I’d like to discuss some changes we are making to the bundles offered on Stellaris.

The goal of these changes is to offer better value for players and help them choose the bundle that’s best for them. The overall question is “What would we recommend to a new Stellaris Player, considering all the options available”? Our conclusion is (obviously) “it depends” - on what kind of experience you have and the things you’re interested in. We mapped three possible routes:

Stellaris flow chart (2).png

For those who want to try it all and choose what they like best, those who just don’t want to commit to buying all the DLC upfront, or even players who haven’t played for a number of years and find themselves wanting to venture back out into the galaxy, we offer the Expansion Subscription, which includes all DLC released for Stellaris including brand new releases. Offered in 1, 3, and 6-month lengths, the expansion subscription is a great deal for a certain subset of our players and gives them the freedom to pick and choose what content they enjoy playing with. Subscribers to the expansion subscription also share their DLC in multiplayer, meaning if you have a subscription and your friends only have the base game, they can use the DLC from your subscription while playing multiplayer with you. (This includes Rick the Cube, we know what’s important!)

To try and help new players, we experimented a bit over the last few months, and we have reached a set of bundles that we are satisfied with. These changes are also informed by your opinion - at the very start of the project, we ran surveys asking our community what Stellaris content you would recommend to new players. We designed the Starter Packs based on this feedback and we are extremely happy with them. (Thank you!)

Let’s discuss the latest changes:

The ‘Stellaris New Player Edition’ becomes the ‘Stellaris: Starter Edition’
We are changing the New Player Edition. Our current iteration features Galactic Paragons, which we chose because we believe that its improvements to the leader system make the game experience more enjoyable. However, in hindsight, we think Galactic Paragons is not the best option for a new player. We also wanted to approach this reorganization to offer better prices to new players and have the option to offer deeper discounts during sales to our new and prospective players. Therefore, we have opted to replace it with Synthetic Dawn, which is a beloved Story Pack. We are also adding the Galaxy Edition Upgrade pack, as it adds some nice things (including the full OST, including tracks from all the DLC) and, overall, only impacts the final retail price a little. And, to enable us to be even more aggressive on discounts, we will make it available as a package - which means its price will not scale based on what DLCs you own.

Finally, the name change aligns Stellaris with what the other Grand Strategy Games from Paradox are currently offering.

Stellaris: Starter Edition - 49.99 USD
  • Stellaris
  • Stellaris: Utopia
  • Stellaris: Synthetic Dawn Story Pack
  • Stellaris: Galaxy Upgrade

But wait, we already have a Starter Pack!

You are absolutely right. The current Starter Pack will be renamed to the Upgrade Pack. We hope that this will offer a clear path forward to new players who are having a hard time deciding what content to get next. This bundle’s price will also scale dynamically based on a player’s owned content, meaning that if they’ve purchased a DLC in the pack on its own, the price of that DLC will be removed from the price of the new Upgrade Pack.

Ultimately, we believe this will also make it easier for you to answer the “What should I get?” questions that we see coming from new and potential players on various platforms and, of course, your friends (but remember, they can also just get the base game and access all the content you have if you play multiplayer together!).

Of course, if you have suggestions for better names or a different selection of content to recommend to new players, we will be thrilled to hear from you and will continue to develop our bundle offerings based on player preferences and feedback from our community.

Thank you all for playing Stellaris, and we’ll see you in space!

I figured today that I've waited long enough. Purchased Season 8.

I hope Rachel and Joey get together this season. :p

As someone who owns all the DLC, I have no idea what is in these existing bundles so can’t easily recommend them.

Can you post the full breakdown of these upgraded bundles? (Like you did for the starter edition above)

Does this mean that Utopia / Synthetic Dawn / etc. are functionally merged into the base game, and code for the game (and code for mods) can now assume they are always present?

That could mean a significant complexity reduction, which would be great for reducing bugs!

No, just a sales package that gives a discount for someone first getting the game. I'm sure you can still buy just Stellaris without any add-ons.

I like it, Utopia and Synthetic Dawn add two very unique Gestalt empire types which play quite differently from regular Organics. MegaCorps are the only other different type but close enough to a regular empire, so I get it leaving them out.
Overall it is a solid base pack with plenty of variety of starts for someone to really get into the game.

It is quite predatory to put "Stellaris: Galaxy Upgrade" into Starter Edition as it does not contain gameplay features, just the OST, wallpapers and a book

Thank you. I thought the exact same thing, but I decided not to comment earlier. Synthetic Dawn hardly has any value anymore since the release of Machine Age. And the Galaxy Upgrade is worthless for anyone who knows how to use Windows File Explorer to find the OST. This Starter Edition feels like a scam to fool new customers not yet familiar with the game.

To be blunt, any expansion two to three years old should have been rolled up in the base game.

Federations came out in 2021 and that would make a good cutoff - three years rolls into base.

Nemesis did not follow until thirteen months later in May 2022 which in my suggestion means it does not become part of the base game will May 2025.

Given how often one DLC or set of patches can effectively rewrite the game it does not seem right to charge much for the older ones. Heck, I could make the play that Paragons should be free considering how much of it was rewritten and quickly given how silly leaders had become.

Easy reference to DLC for all

Yeah, as an owner of all older dlcs I was thinking the same.

At least from plantoids (the first dlc) to distant stars (included), all those features should be put in the base game just as HoI 4 team has done with TfV, DoD and WtT.

Both Utopia and Distant Stars are probably the most loved dlcs which (with Humanoids) everyone already has so it isn't that much of a profit loss. Synthetic Dawn just became weirdly redundant if not nearly useless with the arrival of Machine Age and Apocalypse can no more be considered a full expansion if we compare the amount of content it has to Federations, Overlord, Machine Age or even Galactic Paragons. Plantoids and Leviathans are the very first ones so...

Yeah.

But furthermore, Machine Age is mostly exciting if you already care about machine empires.

So getting new players hooked on basic machines (from Synthetic Dawn) is a valid way to up-sell the new & sexy Machine Age.

Was thinking of something similar. Not really predatory, but does not really make sense for a new player. Heck. I have over 2500 hours of Stellaris, have all DLC, species pack, stories pack you name it, but still have not bought the galaxy upgrade edition

Then people wouldnt buy dlcs and always wait 3 years...That would mean less sales which in transaction means dev will drop the game because its less profitable. Also it can be too complex if a new player gets acces to all the content. There is a already a system which offers discount price for older dlcs... I dont recall the numbers, but it mostly follows the 3 year or older: -50% 1-2 older:-20% pricing... Yeah older dlcs should have a better deal on them nonetheless especially, when those content get reintroduced with newer dlcs, but paradox said that they will be slower with future game altering dlcs and give mroe ground to the custodians to patch the holes.

Im more concerned about the, as others said, predatory deals and dlcs...
Starter pack including non content files...
Paragorn base game making the whole leader system worse for non owners(you basically get more randomized leaders with many useless traits... i dont want an explorer to get any councilor or governing trait as a postive trait and get it take away 1 or even 2 "level up" from the 5 achievable (1 /2 level) in base game).
Paragorn also introduced cheese to lower ship upkeep and what not... the solution was? Nerf the OLD content and let the NEW, broken content mostly unharmed.
Every new content is a powercreep mostly, it makes you stronger, while older dlcs content is just miniscule.

At least you dont need to have the dlcs to play with others

I missed this thread when it first came around and it doesn't count as necroing if someone else does it first!

I've had a couple of people come to me and ask "Hey I see you own literally every Stellaris expansion, what ones should I start off with?" and each time I've stalled out because Megacorp is a weird grab bag of stuff "stolen" from other DLCs bundled alongside a bunch of very specific, very themed mechanics that not everyone wants to opt into.

To condense down a lot of words:

The starter kit is (literally) incomplete without some of the items from Megacorp.
but
The starter kit should absolutely not contain several of the mechanics found in Megacorp.

and

I do not consider the current upgrade pack a complete "next step" upgrade due to it lacking a number of items in Megacorp.
but
I would not consider the upgrade pack as an appropriate "next step" upgrade if it included all the items in Megacorp.

This is not a post complaining about the specific mechanics in Megacorp. This is a post saying that Megacorp has a focus issue that negatively impacts Utopia especially, Parts of it are "Apocalypse" level opt-in and other parts include 30% of Utopia's Galactic Wonders Ascenscion. Megacorp's pilfering of other DLC's items is, in my opinion, one of the bigger stumbling blocks to onboarding new players.
