I'm wondering, because I had a British bomber attack Wilhemshafen, itself defended by level-9 AA (and 110% effectiveness), and never saw the small black exploding puffs indicating AA hits. Thus far, after seeing enemy planes fly over a few of my AA-defended provinces, I've yet to see any of the black puffs I'd grown accustomed to in Vanilla. It seems the only thing my AA defenses do is encourage the AI to avoid/bypass the strongly-defended provinces. I was expecting a level-9 110% AA to blow a lone bomber out of the sky if it was silly enough to sit there for 4-5 hours bombing me while the AA is shooting at it the entire time. OTOH, enemy AA seems to work just fine when *I'm* the one in the crosshairs.

It's probably WAD, but I'm rather disappointed in the AA. I expected to have a razor-wire fence, not a chain-link fence. ;)

Hi,

ITRW AAA was not incrediblly effective. Even the heaviest concentrations of flak used in WW2 were only able to shoot down about 10% of an attack force. In game I think such a result would make any prolonged bombing campaign far too expensive to continue. An interesting fact I found was that loses to "other" causes far outstripped those lost to enemy action.

I see AAA buffs all the time as I have AAA line drawn all along from Brest to Rostov in varying depth, generally allied bombers get one go and after they have lost about 50% of their strenght.

That's what I was expecting. To see a single British bomber parked over a level-9 AA for 4-5 hours was ... unexpected. It didn't do hardly any damage, which probably reflects that it was seriously mangled. But I was really expecting it to retreat after 1-2 hours of getting riddled. As for not seeing the puff(s), that may just be a gfx glitch. I run the game at 'slow' once war breaks out, so it's unlikely I missed it. But I'll keep a close eye on it.

EDIT: just saw a puff as the Brit STR bomber flew over Eindhoven (level-1 AA) on its way east to cause mischief. But I'm seeing no puff from the Level-9 AA in Dortmund, nor the level-9 in Bremen, as those two provinces get bombed. It's probably an issue with the engine that fails to show AA puffs at bombing destinations, only when the plane is in-transit.

The single-bomber port strike at Bremen cost the AI. He went from 100 strength on arrival to 62, then to 21 in the second hour. In the third hour the AA blew the bomber out of the sky. So it is, indeed, working quite well. At least on non-strategic bombers. The STR still seems to fly around and more or less ignore the AA.

EDIT2: a 3-Tac Dutch strike at some entrenched units at Aachen suffered 34 points of AA dmg from my (level-9) flak batteries. Seems AA is much more effective defending versus port strikes than defending against strategic or ground attack missions.

That actually makes some sense.

Port facilities tended to have very heavy AA defenses, in addition to any AA guns that might be mounted on the warships themselves. Whereas in a strategic bombing mission, the bombers have the option of attacking any of a number of targets spread out all over a wide area, and can go for the ones with the weakest AA defenses.

As for ground attack, in that case the bombers are attacking troop concentrations. In most cases those will not be in the same places as the province's fixed AA defenses; army units are assumed to have their own organic AA defenses and thus to be able to take care of themselves.

Since air combat was changed drastically in ARM, may i ask if you play with DD or ARM?

In DD I wouldn't expect much damage from AAA, but in ARM, a lvl9 AAA should do at least some visible damage to a single bomber unit.

I do play with ARM. And please re-read post #6, specifically the two edits.
