Is it better for Spain to annex Portugal at start or not?

An old question for Spain:

Should I keep Portugal alive and allow them to prosper and become rich and hopefully profit from them as an ally, or should I take them out at start of the game and thus secure the early exploring game for myself?

HoG is a typical 'Spain should annex Portugal as soon as possible' player, while I have so far always cooperated with Portuga with variating success.

What do you think?
 
Depends, Depends. Specially on the player playing Portugal. If a player is trustworthy, i wouldnt bother about them, and try to cooperate as much as possible. However, i have seen some smart Portugals cooperating with England to undermine Spain as much as possible. :eek:

I personally prefer to keep Portugal alive, but i really hate when i ask something from my ally (Portugal), and he blatantly refuses. If he needed my aid, i would help him. Sometimes players are too selfish and will always put their individual welfare ahead of the "Iberian Union welfare".

And lastly, if the Portuguese player is so smart as to take these yummy yummy gold provinces from the incas/puerto rico/somewhere else that i consider as Spanish sphere of influence, without my consentiment, i will really, really get pissed.

Anyway, i voted NO for every date.
 
depends who is in port really but most of the time i would let it live i gues
 
The only situation where I would try to annex Portugal is if the player is known to be either a maniac or too unskilled in warfare to be of any use.

Personally I would aim for complete Iberian hegemony with Portugal leading the navy and Spain the land.

Annexing England ASAP would make much more sense than annexing Portugal.
 
I prefer Portugal alive, since a good Porto will deny some choice colonial areas to your other likely competitors. And Porto is unlikely to go to war with you, and may in fact go to war with your competitors.

That said, there are players who I might try to dismember off the bat if I felt that they were likely to try to take Spanish provinces in the future.
 
well i prefer portugal alive if we wouldn't be allies and more:) having a knife ready to backstab is not the option. porto naval and spain Land that's what i'm always aiming for if spain isn't annexed by evil france before that ;)

Well, since it is far more likely I would play Portugal than Spain, I naturally vote no :) .

Additionally, the whole game would lose much in naval combat/competition and colonial/trade field.
 
Just noticed this poll. In the long run Spain is better of with a Portugal than without it. But as others have pointed out, it all depends on diplomacy/players.

the game was ended because of Portugal :rofl: whole world was moved by portugal money, and all enemies were defeated this way. Take my 10K income per year in pocket, and bear in mind that i have no way to invest before trade/infra9 historical time - 1690. So 32 years left = 320 000 ducats. Let`s say i invest 20% in stab/LT/NT. It gives free cash 256 000 ducats prior 1690. In 17th century. With all modern techs.

Bragger :p.

I believe in the Port-Spa alliance. Spain is always better off with a strong Portugal, but i do think the Spaniards should be allowed to take a CoT in the East, so the two can get a complete hold over non-European trade fast.
