Check the game log, they may have dishonored the alliance, especially if they have a higher diplomacy rating with the country you DOW'ed then they do with you.

For example when I declare war on a country is there any way to make my ally fight the enemy? From my experience my allies just sit there and don't do anything unless they were the ones that declared war.

Assuming your allies HAVE declared war when you asked them to then no, I'm afraid there's nothing you can do to get them to actually leave their country and fight. They've upheld their part of the pact by declaring and their first priority is making sure their home turf is safe.

I'm playing as Spain in my current game and allied with France. They seem to have massive armies and send them out against all-comers. OTOH, another ally of mine is Genoa and the only time I've seen them leave home is to invade Parma.

Oh, but if allies agreed to come with you, they will fight. Remember my France-Austria-Holland alliance going to war against Spain-Poland-Turkey-Mameluks+some minors alliance. Austria sieges Navarra, Holland attacks Genua (Spanish), i go for Spanish mainland, Poland and Turkey siege Silesia and Mameluks (!!!!) came with 20 000 army to siege Erz. They move.. but where they move is different question.

USually it's me who keeps sitting there when an ally I don't like much or is far away asks for my help :D The AI nearly always comes and helps. As illustrated earlier Mamelukes in Germany, Ottomans in Ireland, ... :D

Huszics, isn't it enough just to share a common alliance? Or is there a separate command like 'join war' or something that I have to click on? I thought that if I'm allied with someone and I declare war then my ally will automatically join the war unless it has a good relationship with that country. Please clarify.

I would suggest you change those messages to pop up in the middle of the screen instead, so you don't miss them.

You do this, incidentally, by right-clicking (or ctrl-clicking if you're using a Mac with VirtualPC :)) on the message box or the entry in the game log. A dialog box then appears with the possible choices. I really, really recommend changing the notification for the end of an alliance to 'message box with pause'. I was caught out a couple of times like that in practice games.

Another question popped up in my mind.. I wonder if sitting there and not helping your ally can hurt your relationship with them even if you do declare war on the enemy. I'll have to keep an eye on that.

Don't think they're clever enough for that. They do get pissed however if u don't let them share in the loot after a victory. On the other hand if u cut them in, they will be very thankful.
