My new king has a prestige problem. An average of one "high prestige" courtier is leaving per month, gutting his prestige. His only "problem" seems to be is a trait conflict with these courtiers whose loyalty was already low to begin with because of different trait conflicts with the previous king. I want to boost his prestige, how can this be done? Is it possible to go into the save game file and "tweak" his prestige? I tried it, but the in-game prestige was unchanged

Yes it is possible, and you already have found out how to do that. You just seem to have edited the prestige for the wrong character.

The name, current prestige, stats and traits all matched, how could I have chosen the wrong character?

Did you save the modified file correctly ? So did you save it as a .eug file ?
Have you checked to see if your save-game file is not set to 'read only' ?
Do you have Vista or Win7 ? And did you make sure to modify the file as an 'administrator' ?
Have you reloaded the correct save-file ?

a quicker way to raise prestige is to press F12 and then type in prestige then press enter.this will raise your prestige by 1000. to get rid of screen press F12 and any other key at same time.

higher prestige may slow down your courtier loss but wont stop it.courtiers will continue leaving your court until it is reduced to about 7-8 so that characters are spread around the game.this is most noticeable if you have a long lived king

I have a huge court and most of them are loyal. I was concerned because he was losing 25 prestige about every other month and only gaining 6 a month. I have been playing this same game off and on for almost two years, am doing quite well (unified the Rus in the first fifty years) so I didn't want to suddenly lose because several self-centered, skeptical and suspicious courtiers decided to jump ship. I changed the prestige. Fortunately, most of the disloyal courtiers are now asking for money to stay, allowing me to dismiss them without losing prestige.

Why cheat? Most of the fun in the game is dealing with these unexpected situation within the game's own rules. It's not like this is a bug, you just need to either manage your traits better, or hope your unlucky King dies and the next age is better.
