So, I've been hoping for Paradox (or someone close to them) to create a Cold War/modern day game, and this covers the time period. Not being familiar with the Supreme Ruler games, what could I expect from this relative to the more known Paradox products?

I would suggest buying SR Gold if you havent already, its a good game and it should give you a good idea of how the game mechanics work. It doesnt sound like SRCW will be totally different type of game.

You can also following along on the discussions for tiny tidbits of info the forum members manage to pick out the BG dev team at
http://www.bgforums.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=61

SR 2020 was a poor game that was bashed my critics and many gamers alike. Largely because of the confusing interface and horrible army system. SR: Cold war however looks like it could be an improvement over SR 2020 and I look forward to see how it develops. I don't think the OP should buy SR 2020 Gold simply because he likes what he is seeing in SR: Cold war.

I only got into SR202 a few months ago but it is a very tough game to play. I'm still finding things in the interface that could have been useful ages ago. Like I said in the other thread the one thing I want to see most is a simplified interface or at the very least a more comprehensive tutorial.

well, http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/supremeruler2020/index.html - this one of the most respectable websites shows sr20 rating as - POOR

Anyway, I wouldn't say it is poor. I can describe it - GREAT in it's own field. For example, I do not play racing games and I believe no matter how good it is it would be poor for me since I don't know what makes the difference. Same to SR20, it's great for deep strategy fans and only fans can feel it.

But I've been banned from your forum for criticism and it would be weird if I not do it again. I don't know who is your game designer but he does poor job for sure. SR20 has huge potential with great attempt but very poor execution. I don't want to list all bad things here once again, you don't really wanna listen it anyway.

I'm looking forward to Cold War addon. The true is there is no any good ColdWar strategy games on the market. Paradox can't make it because of it’s general engine they sell for 10 years already. It was really funny how V2 rockets in HOI2-3 were zigzagging all through different provinces and sometimes being shot down by Big Bad AA Flaks :)) SR20 engine is not very much fit able for ColdWar the same way as for Paradox games. SR20 uncontrollable military mass and extremely stupid AI cannot create the real sense of ColdWar, where espionage and diplomacy were the general arguments even in regional conflicts.

I believe Battlegoats just want to sell something 3rd time ( same as Paradox sells it’s dlc’s ). I think it’s good for company economy but it loose it’s prestige big times. Hopefully I will be wrong and ColdWar will be REALLY SOMETHING.

That is incorrect, you where banned for being rude to me personnally and the development team as a whole. And that is the end of that discussion.

?????? I haven't been rude personally to anybody ever anywhere! I recognize you as the part of Battlegoats team, not personal Chris Latour ( as it says in your signature ). And saying the things such as - poor game designer - I'm aiming it to the game developing, not personally to any person in your team. Please, provide me with link ( here or in personal message ) where exactly I said anything rude about anyone personally of Battlegoats. If you do it I promise I publicly apologize here or on your forum. But I'm 100% sure you won't find it since I never did it. You just don't like criticism specially if it's the augmented one.

I know you've been warned about bringing up events from the dev forum here, but hey, it's your account...
Perhaps now that this thread has gotten completely derailed it should be closed...

...BG guys are not creative to use this potential... - it's not personal, it's about Battlegoats studio and I still 100% subscribe under my words!

...sometimes it looks like Chris was born yesterday and never played his own game... - I'm sorry Chris, I might went too far with this one, I really didn't want to hurt your personally, I'm one of the biggest fan of SR20 and sometimes I TAKE IT TOO PERSONAL. Once again, I'm sorry about this phrase.

Come now, that's mediocre at best.

If you want to say mediocre, I'm not going to debate the point, but "a poor game that was bashed my critics" is an exageration to say the least.

Not to mention that the Gamespot review was based on the initial release, ver 5.0.1, and we've improved lots since then.

I will go on a different mood, for this thread, before its closure. Since we already have a thread about what we want to have in Supreme Ruler Cold War, I'm just going to try to be constructive. There are critics, there are always critics, but those critics have to be constructive and not to attack personally the developpers of a game, which work very hard to produce their games, and are bound to a limited budget, a limited prestige, and a limited fan-base.

Now, this thread should not be about what we don't want in SRCW, because if it does, that could degenerate quickly. But it could be about how we intend to correct the past mistakes. So, I will just express my hopes that this game will be complete and immersive. I already said my others thought in another thread, but I really don't want to hear people which complain about SR2020 and think that this game will be the same, because I think developpers make progress, but sometime mistake in their fuhrtest games, which are not build like their previous, and that lead to complain about the unfinished state of the game. If this game take into account all the advances of SR2020 (which I only played to the demo because its an a-historic game) and the constructive critics of the fan, there is no doubt that could be a great game.

But all the producers cannot, at the release of their games, especially when they have a limited base, have a no-bug, balanced and perfect game. And that annoy the consumer, which can feel tricked by the producers because when the game is "really" ready, it is cheaper. Poor fans, they always pay the big price... And I probably will...

SR has completely different priorities to regular Paradox internal titles. I'd love a Cold War game, but I know that SR is just not for me. So I'm still waiting for Pdox to make such a game.

And that's fine, though you're still welcome to join conversations and tell us what type of things make "a cold war game" for you. As long as you talk in big picture stuff, it could apply to any project.

Perhaps a better course for this thread is discussing other game which have/have not captured the cold war feel and why/why not.

For example, we already mentioned in a dev diary that we've been strongly influenced by two titles; Balance of Power and the board game Twilight Struggle. I'm more familiar with the second. I like how they used the Defcon setting as a global "threat level" indicator that actions of either player could degrade/improve. I was also thinking the other day that they made a succesful CW game with includeing nuclear exchanges, but then again they don't have any units.

Balthagor, no doubt you are familiar with the many times both sides got false positive reports of general strikes being underway (Stanislav Petrov being most famous, but there were others for the Americans too), any plans to incorporate something like that? Ever seen the movie Fail Safe, or read the book?

Please guys, pay a lot of attention to the interface this time over. You're making complicated games after all, interface can't be an additional obstacle on top of everything else.

I'm happy to see someone from Paradox family taking a shot at the Cold War period, I hope it'll be a very good one because you can get something epic done with the idea you have. I'll be checking out on this title in the coming months.

I honestly did not find the interface at all confusing. Maybe that's just me (But Dwarf Fortress on the other hand, by god! Not the slightest clue what I'm doing there!)

I think that you guys need to pay a lot of attention to Proxy wars. And the diplomatic side of things needs a huge improvement. But hey, I'd be overjoyed even if it was just SR2020 in a different timeframe! :p

Keep up the great work!

For what its worth, for me personally the interface and the economy I could come to grips with. And i liked the economic system in the game. But what I personally could not in a stand was micro-managing battalion sized formation and their logistics in a strategy game of this scale. And assigning the AI control just leads to disaster. So what I would want the most is to not have to control lower then brigade size formations.

I know coding AI:s are not easy, so the alternative of making an AI capable of competently fight as a cohesive force if you group some battalions in a brigade is not something I really expect to happen.

Maybe you could decide to have brigades control a given amount of squares with the fighting power of the brigade diminishing with each square. Good infrastructure could negate some of the effects, different terrain could make these effects better or worse depending on if you are attacking or defending. The combat value of the brigade could be an abstraction of the combat values of the battalions you decide to put in it.

Just my two cents, the point being that what made it the hardest for me to enjoy the game was the military micro.
