Good afternoon and good tidings, one and all!

As I was bathing last night, I was suddenly hit by a brilliant idea. What if we created a massive Mario world for "Crusader Kings II"?

Just think about it. The Mario world is huge, and we can use locations from every game for counties, duchies, and the like! After all, most governments in the Mushroom World are kingdoms already. (-and there are oppurtunities for Republics, like Rogueport and Twilight Town.)

Of course, there will be many different species and many different "Cultures", as well as religions and the like. For ease of use, characters of different species can marry together and be "delivered" a child by a stork (like in "Yoshi's Island") that will be one of the "parents'" species, and, hopefully, will combine the traits.

    fatehassmiledonme.jpg

Like in the game, different Culture groups have different crowns, and they yield different names depending on status. (For example, the 1985 AD manual for "Super Mario Brothers" says that Goombas were members of "tribes that defected to Bowser". Gooma cultured characters, therefore, would be "Chief-King" or "Chief", etc. Twilight Town and Rogueport characters, being republican in nature, would follow the "mayoral" idea.

Temples would be replaced with altars and shrines to the Star Spirits, and so on.

We could cover the Mushroom Kingdom and all of its surrounding areas from all of the games over the years. We could do the eight ducal-level (petty) kingdoms of the Mushroom World, and cover Dark Land (Bowser's traditional home) as an Empire-level state. The worlds are huge and the possibilities are endless.

WE CAN EVEN HAVE A SHROOB INVASION.

    Early Culture Examples
  • DUDE, YES!

I am humbled that you are so delighted by this concept.

OF COURSE I SHOULD PUT IN SM-RPG. Smithy could be an INVADING HOARD that is AI-compelled to take over to Dark Land. Twilight Town (PM2) can be a Republic.

Even more fun would be the various species. Like I said, we can use "Yoshi's Island" storks for infants to explain royal marriages between species.

The religion would obviously be "Astrotheology", the Star Spirits. Heresies would exist, such as Bowser revering himself (though that could be their own religion), while Smithy would have his own, like the Aztecs did. Yoshis would have "Happiness" as the religion, based on "Yoshi's Island" and "Yoshi's Story". Shy Guys come from "Super Mario II", in a land called "Subcon".

    ------------

We should start listing cultures, by group...

    I'll start.

    Toadstool (Mushroom Kingdom proper)

    Dryite (Dry Dry Desert, Tutankhoopa)

Crystal (Arctic zones, Crystal Palace, PM1, Star Kids)

Penguin ("Super Mario LXIV", Shiver City, arctic zones etc.)

Delfinite (Isle Delfino), with Delfinite-Pianta and Delfinite-Noki, depending on who you play and who you conquer, similar to Finnish/Norwegian/Swedish in Vanilla

Astrotheologic (Star Spirits, Star Haven, Star Rod), mixes with Crystal because of Starlet Town as the basis for Star Kids

    Goomba (Goomba tribes and such)

Dreamy (Pillow Island, Super Luigi's Dream Team)

    Beanish (Bean Bean Island)

Toady (BECAUSE FAWFUL-SPECIES REPUBLIC THAT'S WHY)

    Twilighter (Twilight Town)

Koopa (Bowser, Dark Land, Koopa Troop, Koopa states)

Glitz (Glitz Pit islands because it's best level)

Boolian (Boos and ghosts), Super Mario Galaxy uses this demonym and its language, Boolish

Blubba (Clubbas, Spike Spitters, Iced Clubbas, Macho Grubba)

Frog (SMRPG level where the Mallow the Cloud Prince thinks he hails from)

Cloudson (SMRPG level, Mallow's race, Cloud peoples)

    Marrymore (SMRPG from, well, Marrymore)

    Bob-omb (Wario's Battle Canyon, Bob-omb Battlefield)

Gambler (Game Guy, Casino levels, Casino boards in "Mario Party", gambling characters), possibly in Isle Delfino

Mysterylandese ("Mario Party II"), basically some exotic, UFO-driving Bob-ombs that speak in cryptic languages, probably more advanced
    Smithite

Kongo (Apes and such, I'm counting them as Mario world characters)

    Kremlin ("Donkey Kong" villain)

Merlin (Those Roma/gypsies in "Paper Mario I")

    Rogueportian ("Paper Mario II", Rogueport)

Dokidoki ("Super Mario II" was originally called "Doki-Doki Panic") covering Subcon, Wart, Shy Guys, Birdo(es?)

Threeian (The Mushroom World from "Super Mario Brothers III")

Powan (Covering Freezy, Crabs, and the like from the original "Mario Brothers" arcade game)

Sarrassalian ("Super Mario Land I", home of Daisy)

There are more, but I've covered everything I can think of.

I need ideas. I can't code to save my life. If I could, I'd be doing it all myself!

    Prestige, Piety, Decadence, and Wishes
  • In the Mario series, I feel that we will need to tweak "Prestige", "Piety", and Decadence to fit the game.

PRESTIGE will remain the same. Everyone in Mario has nationalism and wants to see their kingdom's glory expand. You will earn Prestige based on your actions as ruler and the exploits of your realm.

DECADENCE will be replaced with CONSPICUIOUS CONSUMPTION, or CC. Evil characters, greedy characters, and characters of certain religions will have a CC score on percentage. The higher your CC, the better your Tax Income (the increase is HUGE) and the higher your Prestige, at the cost of great hatred from all good or Astrotheologic characters and increasing from your non-evil or non-greedy vassals. -but beware! Nintendo always balances its games, and so do we. If you have too high of CC for too long, and you also have a big enough Kingdom title, the Star Spirits will command righteous Astrotheologic characters to engage a Crusade. The object is to strip you of your wealth back to zero and publically humiliate you by making you apologize for being a "greedy jerk". It resets your Prestige to -250 and your Coins to zero. It also gives a small opinion boost to non-evil vassals. If you win and successfully defend a Crusade, your reward will be huge.

PIETY will be replaced with WISHES for Astrotheologic characters. Wishes are accumulated based on one's devotion to the principles of honor, friendship, trust, purity, and integrity espoused in "Paper Mario" as reasons why the Star Spirits honored Peach's wish and ignored Bowser's. If you save enough Wishes, an Astrotheologic character can Make a Wish (a set of helpful but not overpowered benefits similar to what the Pope gives you as a good Catholic). There are a large array of Wishes. A character can make all of them, but only once in his lifetime.

    EXAMPLE:
"The Star Spirits have heard my prayers! I was given a block full of coins! (+300 Coins)")
"The Star Spirits have heard my prayers! I have received Power Ups for my troops! (+2 Martial)."
"It seems I have been invited to Shooting Star Summit to learn more of the Star Rod. I am truly blessed! (+2 Learning)."

    (For evil characters.)
You try to hold back the tears as you realize there will be no magic tonight. Your tears turn to rage.

"What?!" you bellow. "The Star Spirits dare refuse to grant my Wish! I'll show them! I'LL SHOW THEM ALL!" (Gain Claim on Star Haven capital!)

THE MOD IS RECOVERED AND NOT DEAD
  • @AvroLancaster \ @tsf4

    ATTENTION ALL SUBSCRIBERS.

Avrolancaster pulled through and recovered the entire Mod. All the history files, all the content, all the religions, all EVERYTHING are fully intact.

You can view the files by clicking this link.

Avrolancaster himself has announced that he will not work on the Mod again until CK2 is completely finished updating. The contents of this folder were actually launched during the "Old Gods" EP, and the last version worked with Charlemagne. The Map is fully drawn, but it still needs work to be launched in the game.
Anyone who wishes to help may do so my Branching the Mod's Github page (it is public) and add their own work.

If anyone wants to delve further in the Mod or join the development board, please message me.

Bride of the Son of the Bride of the Map
  • Having been wrong befored in participating in Mods, or having shot myself in the foot once, I have decided that I really want to focus on getting this Mod to launch. I'll set up de jure myself, but the first and most important duty is getting the Map to launch.

Map work is the hardest part. We have a fully developed Map, but the recquisite continents, etc etc. has not been made.
    pliAk1U.png

I can write de jure structures, but I am not capable of map work without being able to run the Map.

Anyone who wants to help should check out the Github page.

Super Crown: We All Know Why You're Here
  • Obviously, everyone's been asking about the latest, magnificent meme.

    L5DCHGa.png

The Super Crown is one of the craziest and best, most spicy pieces of Mario lore added in years, if not decades. It WILL be in the game. The laziest (and easiest) way to simulate it is to have anyone who equips it get an Occluded Graphical Culture to make them look like Peach. However, I don't want to add a Peachette for every species in the game, and I am pretty sure no one else does, either.

I think the Super Crown will be a rare occurence and, as suggested, limited to Toads. As this is a sandbox strategy game at heart, I imagine that rogue, female Toads who break away and form their own independent Empires can search for a Super Crown. (Yes, you can rise to the top and become a kidnapper, etc. etc..)

I've already decided that every power-up that will be added to the game will be an Artifact, including the Super Crown. You can only equip one Artifact at a time and you can lose them in battle or to random, sometimes frustrating events that are tied to your Traits, Species, and Religion (similar to how you can lose Religious Relics, but permanent). This will prevent someone from permanently having a Fire Flower (Martial increase, special attack moves if commanding) or Super Mushroom (height and health increase, etc. etc.), or so on. One-Up Mushrooms, if possible, will use the same mechanisms as the Ressurected by Rh'llor Event system in the "Game of Thrones" Mod, which is literally a get-out-of-exection-and-jail free card. Needless to say, those will be as rare as the aforementioned Event.

I do want to implement Bowsette somehow. Like the Avatar Mod, I am open to the idea of Decision trees and missions, but my main idea is based on something (that was not explicit) I saw on some fan-art a little while ago, right before Bowsette took off, displayed below:
    RSAfNKl.png

If you guess "Peach possessed by Bowser", you are correct. If the Shadow Queen did it, so can we.

In context, BTW, Mario didn't literally "come around" and join Bowser possessing Peach's way of thinking. In the piece this excerpt was taken from, Bowser possessing Peach put Mario in a clone of Peach's body and was about to lock him away for good after sedating him in a state of Chemical Bliss akin to "Stellaris". The short story this was from isn't going to be used in the Mod.

Also, I only plan for there to be Bowsette and Peachette. Male Toads will not take the Super Crown (instead, the Enatic/matriarchy succession mechanics will be deployed), nor will any other creature.

    Legal Issues
  • My greatest fear about this Mod, though, is that Nintendo will target it for removal. Here's what we know about Nintendo policy.

    1. If the fan work uses any form of gameplay, be it mechanics or footage, from actual Nintendo content, it will be taken down (e.g. "Pokemon Uranium", "Super Mario Online"). The Mod will not face this issue because it uses Paradox mechanics.
    2. If the fan work uses the official music from any actual Nintendo creation, it will be taken down. The Mod will not face this issue because it will use MIDI files.
    3. If any image, screenshot, quote, or content of any kind is used from Nintendo's official website, it will be taken down with prejudice. The Mod will not face this issue because we are not suicidal.https://www.nintendo.com/corp/copyright.jsp
    4. Cracking a Nintendo game will result in it being taken down. The Mod will not face this issue because it uses CK2 mechanics.
    5. If the fan work is sold for money, it will take it down. The Mod will not face this issue if it could get me in trouble.
    6. If the fan work contains porn of any Nintendo character, it will be taken down. The Mod will not face this issue because of my religion and my respect for the Mario series.
    7. Only one Mod for a different video game using Nintendo content has ever been taken down by Nintendo. Here's hoping we aren't the second.
    8. You cannot use trademarks. This means all fonts will be made by laymen and we cannot use any box art. We also cannot name any of the Bookmarks after actual Mario video games (so the "Super Mario Brothers III" Bookmark will be titled "The Fall of the Mushroom World").

All possible steps will be taken to avoid infringement, but if push comes to shove, I will try and fight it, even if Paradox does not back me.

Steps will be taken to preserve the Mod. Namely, we'll be using MIDI files in place of actual Nintendo music, avoid naming any game by name, and, of course, refuse to solicit any kind of financial gain, even if it is permitted by Paradox.

This is really all we can do to stop it.

    Toads Are Not Genderless
  • Also, Toads are NOT genderless.

    gfs_124866_1_14.jpg

    gfs_124866_1_11.jpg

In addition, the claim that Toads have no genders arose from politicized pundits with connections to certain special interests: the actual statement by those who asked in the interview stated that Nintendo never addressed Toad's gender (and thus the gender of all Toads) until the introduction of Toadette, when the normal Toad was declared male. There is a difference between "we never thought about Toads having genders until we added Toadette" and "Toads do not have genders".

Now, I personally imagine that Goombas and Toads reproduce in the open air (sperm and eggs are replaced with male and female meiosis spores) through nuzzling. In RL, mushrooms fertilize similarly to plants (that's what the gills underneath the cap are for on the fruiting body), in which spores contact and begin the reproduction process. This means that Goombas rubbing the underside of their little cheeks with other Goombas allows for new Goombas to germinate.

It is as adorable as it is wholesome, and it has hilarious implications in the publishing industry.

    Settling Matters of Continuity

    Early Religion Samples
  • I haven't finished this list, but this is a taste of what I think Religion will do in the game.

    1. ASTROTHEOLOGY (Icon: Power Star)
TOOLTIP: Astrotheologianism is the ancient veneration of the Stars, manifested in various forms and ruled over by the Star Spirits, who grant Wishes to righteous beings. Astrotheologianism teaches that morally upright behavior and honor will receive direct divine favor and prosperity to its adherents. Power Stars and their infant form, Lumas, are the primary agents of the Star Spirits on the earth, granting immense abilities to their owners and keepers. Star Spirits come from their own race of special Stars that begin as Star Kids in the frozen mountains northeast of the Mushroom Kingdom. Upon maturation, they ascend to Star Haven and monitor the wishes of good creatures alongside other clerical duties.

    IN GAME FACTORS:
+ Astrotheologians can accrue Wishes and Make a Wish to the Star Spirits.
+ Enjoys relations boost with other Astrotheologian characters.
+ Can receive bonuses for morally upright behavior.
+ Will receive extra punishment when orchestrating Kidnappings, Assasinations, and other wicked deeds.
+ Has an empire religious head, the Star Spirits.
+ All Astrotheologic rulers start as Absolute Cognatic and do not have malice towards female rulers and vassals.
    + Has no heresies.

    SAMPLE EVENTS AND BENEFITS:
+ Sometimes, a Star Kid will end up outside your ruler's castle. You can choose to house him or her for the night or spend Wishes to convince him to stay in your court, where you will name him. From here, you can house him and treat him like a regular Courtier, and even marry him off or use him to your own devices (including landing him). However, upon the day he becomes of age, he will ascend to Star Haven and take all his worldly possessions with him. They become vassals of the Star Spirits. However, if you can acquire a certain Relationship with him or her (requires high Diplomacy and relationship wouldn't be just Opinion, because you could gift him before his birthday to stay), he will stay with you.

+ If you are very small and are defending yourself against someone who can destroy you in one Enforced Demand, sometimes the Star Spirits will hear your prayers and grant you a few hundred Coins to hire mercenaries or what not.

+ Astrotheologian characters receive no consequences when peacibly expanding to outer space.

    EXAMPLE FOLLOWERS:
    +Princess Peach
    +Mario Brothers
    +Most of the Mushroom Kingdom
    +Largest religion by far

    2. GREED (Icon: Coin)
TOOLTIP: Greed is the vice of never being content with one's property or status, and a constant, consuming urge to increase one's status. It is one of the most notrious misdeeds amongst Mushroom Planet denizens as well as the most common. Characters adhering to Greed simply refuse to be comfortable with what they have and will take any risk to acquire more possessions.

    IN GAME FACTORS:
+ Greed characters face the Conspicuious Consumption feature.
    + Base tax gain +10%.
+ Non-Greed characters have a negative opinion malus of Greedy characters.
+ Greedy characters gain Envy instead of Wishes or Piety. At the end of each year, ten percent of a Greed character's Envy points are added to his Coin points until he reaches one thousand points. After that, one percent is gifted. (For example, a character with three hundred Envy Points will receive thirty Coins, but a character with three thousand will also receive thirty coins. This represents complaency.)
+ Greed characters automatically gain many Stewardship Points at birth and lose Diplomacy Points.
+ Greed characters must pay a Bride Price because no one wants to marry someone who loves money only. (Uses Bride Price mechanic.)
+ Money CAN buy happiness! Greed characters can marry another of any religion if they are willing to buy love.
+ Has a ducal level religious head, the Greed Spirit. (This "head" is actually a nuisance.)
+ Greed characters suffer no Prestige penalty when breaking Truces.
+ When at war, Greed characters cannot collect taxes because they are too busy decorating themselves in Bling of War. (Balance to avoid Greed owning everyone and everything.)
+ Can Exorcise the Greed Spirit. Subjugation destroys the Greed Spirit and grants you one percent of his vast wealth. (Requires control of four Greed holy sites, or two Greed holy sites and the Greed Spirit's home island.)
+ AI Greed characters will never surrender their Titles without a fight.
+ AI Greed characters will never join a Plot without being bribed first.
+ Gifts are more effective to Greedy characters when from non-Greedy characters.

    SAMPLE EVENTS:
+ The Greed Spirit will occasionally steal your money in the night, unless your Intrigue is high enough. (Balance.)
+ The Greed Spirit will, once each year, insult you if your money is too low.
+ Vassals possessing the Greed religion will occasionally try to steal your money. If you catch them, you get a Righteous Imprisonment and they pay a small reparation fee.
+ Once a year, you can attempt to steal money from your liege, with success based on Intrigue. If you fail, he will try to Imprison you.
+ The Greed Spirit will randomly attack Empire-level Greed characters (similar to, but smaller than, the Rise of the Shia in the Vanilla game). If you lose against him, he will take a quarter of your funds.
+ The Greed Spirit will occasionally nag you to give him Baronies, if you hold any. If you agree, you will lose CC but gain an Approval amongst your non-Greedy vassals.
+ If a greed character becomes Bankrupt, he is given the option of switching to the Gambling heresy.
+ Greed characters can send their Diviner equivalent to a province one of their vassals rules over and embezzle money. This increases the Tax Income of the province but risks a significant penalty if discovered.
+ Players of a Republic demense can convert to Greed at any time, via Decision. However, the AI does not normally do this unless they are Cynical or have a trait common in Greedy characters.

    EXAMPLE FOLLOWERS:
    + Wario
    + Some Dark Land vassals.
+ Scattered counties based on game lore.
    + Some Goombas.

    ---

    3. GAMBLING [GREED HERESY] (Icon: the number seven)
TOOLTIP: The prelevance of Casinoes throughout the world has lead to a large population with gambling addictions. Gamblers love to risk their entire life savings in the hopes of one day making bank.

    IN GAME FACTORS:
+ Tax income -5% on non-religious holdings. You're always gambling your income.
+ Religious head is Game Guy, but religious head can be replaced by a character who meets objectives. (Similar to Ibadi Caliph, expcet it replaces a head instead of spawns a head.)
+ Religious holdings under Gambling characters are Casinoes. If they like you more than they like Game Guy, they will pay you to patron their facility. (Equivalent to Catholic tax to Pope or you.)
+ Gambling characters can Become a Casino Tycoon if they control all Greed holy casinoes and have a certain amout of Prestige. If you Become a Casino Tycoon, all Gambling religious holders will instead pay you if they like you more than their liege.
+ Each year, Gambling characters will automatically gamble a portion of their money (this amount increments as the game ticks on and is also tied to one's demense). They then have a chance of winning back their money with small (say five percent) interest, losing it all, or hitting a Jackpot. While chance is the main factor in this, you can slightly increase your odds by having high Stewardship. Jackpots cannot happen more than once in a Greed character's lifetime.
+ Gambling characters always appoint their religious holders (like Catholics do with Free Investiture).

    SPECIAL EVENTS:
+ Game Guy will occasionally give you the option of competing against him in a gambling Mini-Game. You can win or lose this based on raw chance, and nothing you can do will inrease it or decrease it. If you win, your wagered coins are doubled (like in his original game). If you lose, your coins are his.
+ As a Casino Tycoon, AI players will do the same to you at random. You can take their money or pay them double. The House is more inclined to win, so the AI doesn't ask you as often as Game Guy does.
+ If you have high enough Stewardship and Diplomacy, you can randomly cause Greedy vassals to Become Addicted and turn them into Gamblers.
+ If the Gambling heresy overtakes the Greed religion, the negative tax modifier ceases to exist.

    EXAMPLE FOLLOWERS:
+ Many Goombas and Goomba vassals. (Goombas seem to have a serious gambling addiction.)

    Other religions include:
    * BOWSER. Obviously, the religion of Dark Land characters. Head is Bowser like the Islam Caliphs. Direct descendants of Bowser have a Trait like a Sayyid in the Vanilla game. Bowser can declare Invasions, and he will. He sure will. Sayyid-equivalent players can unseat Bowser and become the leader of the Bowser faith. Like Islam in-game titles held by Bowser characters are changed. They change from, say, Toad Town to [FIRST NAME]'s Toad Town. (Such as Bowser's Mushroom Kingdom.) Like Islam, Bowser inheritance is Open and based on power, but it is not Agnatic.

    * TWILIGHTER. Twilight characters are vegetarians who are terrified of pigs. They perform temple worship and center their lives around Creepy Steeple. (They can make Pilgramages to it.) Twilight characters make excellent and humble vassals and rarely complain. They are also extremely difficult to convert. They can be Reformed into an actually useful religion if you control their Holy Sites and the Twilight Town Republic. (Basically, this religion is the hardest one in the game to make use of, much like the West African faith.)

    * HAPPINESS: Yoshis center their lives on Happiness and can make Pilgramages to sites like the Super Happy Tree or the Yoster Isles. As long as you don't try to take their land, imprison them, or revoke titles, Yoshis make excellent vassals. The Happiness Faith can be Radicalized to "spread happiness" like a Mongol Tengri and invade the planet! BA HA HA HA! Yoshis can take Multiple Wives (like Islam), but can't force them like Concubines.

    * SHROOB: Shroobs are invaders similar to the Mongols in the Vanilla game. Members of the Shroob faith and the Shroob Culture have Invasion Casus Bellis. Their head is whoever controls the Shroob Intergalactic Empire title. Shroobs can take Concubines.

    More Early Examples of Religion
  • Wow, those religious ideas are great! Here's a few suggestions I have while reading them:

    ASTROTHEOLOGY/GOOD RELIGIONS:

-Astrotheology, Happiness and other "Good" religions (like worship of the Shine Sprites from Super Mario Sunshine) should be in the same religious group so they don't all hate each other.
-Low Moral Authority for the "Good" religions should have people convert to Greed ("If our leaders are unmoral, why should I be moral?").
-Characters that have traditional "Greedy" traits (Greed, Glutton, Ambitious) or "Evil" traits (Cruel, most sins, Ambitious) who follow one of the "Good" religions could be considered "in hiding" and pretending to be a paragon of virtue in public but actually being greedy/cruel/whatever behind closed doors. If their evil deeds are exposed (failed plots or something) then they could convert to the Greed or Conquest (see later suggestions) religions.

    GREED:

-I think the Bling of War is a bit excessive and could be hard to code. The Greed Spirit and Vassals stealing their money constantly should balance out the ridiculous amounts of money that they get. If it isn't, well then we'll just increase the frequency of those events. ;)
-I have a horrible feeling that Bride Price is exclusive to Merchant Republics, which is unfortunate. I hope I am wrong.
-Greed Characters should have a CB to invade other countries and steal their coins. They should also be able to raid.
-Subjugating the Greed Spirit should be hard. Putting his Island and other Holy Sites in difficult locations (middle of various larger empires) should be enough to do that. But the rewards should be grand, after doing that Greed characters SHOULD be able to out-compete everyone.

    GAMBLING:

-Gamblers should have "Luck" as their Piety.
-Gamblers should have a bit of control over their gambling. Every year/time period, they should have an event allowing them to choose how much of their wealth they want to gamble. The more they put, the higher vassal opinion they get. If they refuse to do this, then they gain a vassal opinion malus and have a chance of converting back to Greed. If they win they will gain luck along with their wealth back, if they lose they will lose luck.
-Gamblers should be able to gamble at any time they get enough money for more rewards. Maybe like 1000 coins? This would be separate from the yearly events and would use a hard cap of money so as not to be exploitable for lots of vassal opinion.

    BOWSER'S RELIGION:

-I reckon this should be called "Koopa Imperialism" or something.
-There should be a high chance of them revolting against masters who are not of their religion (maybe a large opinion malus if their liege is not the same religion as them).
    -Piety should be called "Strength".
-We should have a heresy of Koopa Imperialism called "Conquest". This is the generic religion for villains who are more obsessed with conquest rather than wealth (Like Wart from Super Mario Bros 2 or Count Bleck from Super Paper Mario). It should follow very similar mechanics to "Koopa Imperialism", except for some sort of Anti-Papal or Autocelphy mechanic to represent the fact that they are various would-be-emperors at eachother's throats rather than a unified front.

MISC THINGS NOT NECESSARILY RELATED TO RELIGION:

-There should be a plot to rescue people from jail, such as how the Mario Brothers keep rescuing Peach from getting kidnapped by various baddies.
-There should be an event relating to the Star Festival from the Super Mario Galaxy series.

    Kong Religion
  • While rereading this thread, I noticed a glaring omission. The Kongs have no religion of their own!

Seeing as the only media that shows the Kongs as being more than barely intelligent banana eaters is the Donkey Kong Country TV show, I recommend drawing the religious/mystical aspects from that.

My (very first draft) proposal for the Kong religion:

    ----------------------

    "Kong Faith"

The Kong religion has a religious head, The Crystal Coconut, an inanimate object capable of granting prophesies about who will rule.

The Kongs have access only to Casus Bellis related to claims or their special (below) religious casus belli. No holy wars, no Invasions, none of that.

Through some mechanism, potentially asking the Crystal Coconut for an claim, pious or favoured Kongs can get claims on virtually any title, but they must hold the Kongo Bongo (or Donkey Kong Country or whatever you call "Kong Land") Island title before they acquire any external claims.

All independent Kongs have a strong, kingdom-snatching CB on all other independent Kongs. All independent Kongs will always have a CB against the holder of k_kong if it is not held by a correligionist.

If a holder of k_kong is of the Kong faith, and the Crystal Coconut does not exist as the religious head of the Kong faith, they have access to a decision to recover the Crystal Coconut which makes the Kremling faith lose their religious head and restores the Crystal Coconut as the head of the Kong faith.

    ------Heresy------

    "Kremling faith"

The Kremling faith has basically no mechanics, and no religious head, other than the default access to Holy Wars and other non-claim wars.

If a Kremling character controls k_kong, and their faith has no religious head, they have access to a decision that removes the religious head of the Kong faith and creates the Crystal Coconut as the religious head of the Kremling faith.

The Kremlings, when the Crystal Coconut is the head of their religion, have full access to the Crystal Coconut Kingdom-Claim generating mechanics.

    ------------------

This system should create a constant animosity between the Kremlings and Kongs as well as, for the most part, keep them occupied with each other.

If my suggestion for video-game-linked start dates is used, the 1981 Donkey Kong-at-war-with-The Mushroom Kingdom war could be a claim war from a Crystal Coconut grant.

    Species Traits
  • So, double post, but double post with content!

I've been thinking a lot about this mod and I really want to help in any way I can.

One thing I think would be interesting/necessary is to have traits linked to species. In the same way Hindu caste traits are hereditary and provide bonuses of various sorts, we could add traits for virtually every species in the Mario universe, and they don't all have to be positive! Being a Goomba could give you a universal malus, whereas being a Kong could boost martial but cost diplo and learning, and something like a Robot could be all buffs.

Anyway, I've made a bunch of trait graphics for various Super Mario Universe species. I plan to make enough traits so that every enemy, boss, character and NPC from every game can be represented in game with one of the traits. Not every species gets a trait, for instance, we don't need an icon for the hundred different animal characters, a general animal trait can suffice. In the below preview I have a general plant trait and a Piranha Plant trait. We can get as specific as people want.

    PreviewScoll.png

In order from left-to-right they are:
    Human
    Wiggler
Two versions of an evil coin (yes, from Hotel Mario).
Belome (not sure if he's a unique character or a member of a rare species. Either way, he can have an icon.)
Kong (intended to be a general Kong trait, but could be specific to Donkey if so desired)
Generic Monkey (Mario games have Ukiki, Grinders, Short Fuses, and probably more types of monkeys. This is not meant to represent a Kong.)
    Generic Animal
Egglplant-based-guy (There's at least one kind)
    Piranha Plant
General Plant (it's a pokey head from Super Princess Peach)
Generic Insect (or a Fighter Fly)
    Generic Spider
    Blow Hard
    Generic Slime
    Two versions of a Blooper

Now, as for the style I'm not sure what looks best... I like the silhouette best personally, but for complex shapes like Belome it's pretty useless, also unpopular or non-iconic species like the Evil Coins and Blowhards are unrecognisable as a silhouette (it becomes a game of "Who's that Pokemon"). The sepia style ones (Blow Hard, Evil Coin and Belome) work, but some look really good (imo) in full colour.

Anyway, feedback would be appreciated. I would prefer to do them all in a consistent style.

Also, these trait icons were an unsolicited submission to the mod, but if TurtleShroom uses them, I used three spritesheets in the creation of some of the images above. If you use the Wiggler, know that the isolated Wiggler head came from a user named Teeks, the Belome sprite was isolated by a user named Tonberry2K, and the Ukiki (monkey) came from a spritesheet by Jack SkellingtonvXX. The rest I isolated from various promotional images, screenshots, the wiki or whatever.

    Coat of Arms Shields: I-XXI
  • Explanation for Shields One through Twenty One!

They are in descending order from left to right. (Cases where I added a link to another place were ones I had to look up. All else is memory.)

    1. Mushroom Kingdom (e_mushroom_kingdom); [This is the official flag of the Mushroom Kingdom, as seen in the original "Super Mario Brothers I". All the flags you see in places like "Super Mario LXIV" and "Super Mario's Galaxy I" are the flags of House Toadstool. The Mushroom Kingdom is actually a principality and its rulers are Princes or Princesses.]

    2. Koopa Troop (e_bowser); [The original name for Bowser's lands was the "Koopa Troop", which doubles as the name of Bowser's army.]

    3. Bowser-Occupied Mushroom Kingdom (titular e_bowser_mushroom_kingdom); [This is the original flag that Bowser hung on every pole, castle, and holding in his overrun demense, in "Super Mario Brothers I". If Bowser can conquer the entire Mushroom Kingdom, he can reform it. Similar to creating Hungary, it also offers religious conversions of the are and moves the capital to Toad Town.]

    4. Shooting Star Summit (c_shooting_star_summit); [Shooting Star Summit was the gateway to Star Haven and the place where the Star Spirits speak if they are removed from their actual demense. This is a Holy Site for Astrotheology.]

    5. This is an unamed Goomba empire. Similar to how a Dothraki or Pirate in the "Game of Thrones" Mod can declare themselves the Great Khal or the Pirate King respectively, an independent Goomba can declare himself the supreme ruler of all Goombas if he holds both the canon Goomba Kingdom ("Paper Mario I") and at least two other Kingdoms. No vassal can be a Bowser, a follower of Bowser's cult of personality, or of the Bowserite culture. This gives him or her a Tribal Unity casus belli on all other independent Goombas.

    6. This is the shield for both Mario and Luigi's house (c_mario) and the Super Mario Brothers mercenary (d_mario, de jure under Mushroom Kingdom). Similar to Constantinople in the Vanilla CK2, if the Mario Brothers somehow become independent, you can reinstate them by Decision. It is a Holy Site for Astrotheology.

    7. Isle Delfino (k_delfino); [That's the canon flag of Isle Delfino. Isle Delfino is the only location in the game that is explicitly shown to have an independent judiciary. This implies heavily, alongside the fact that Isle Delfino has no king, that Isle Delfino is a tourist-centered Republic. Instead of those super cool Doge hats, Pianta Republicans wear fedoras, like Donpianta.]

    8. If Bowser, a Bowser, a Bowser worshipper, or a character with Bowserite culture conquers Isle Delfino, he can form Bowser's Bath (k_sexy_bowser_in_a_giant_hot_tub). The name comes from "Super Mario Sunshine's" final boss level, where Bowser is literally in a hot tub.

    9. Marrymore (c_marrymore); [Marrymore is from "Super Mario's RPG". If you hold it, you can hold special Wedding Feasts, like in "Game of Thrones" Mod.]

    10. Kong Island (k_dk); [As shown in "Donkey Kong LXIV", Kong Island is directly adjacent to K. Rool's Floating Fortress. It has several counties representing each level of the game. It is a Kong and Kremlin Holy Site because neither group rersts until total conquest.]

    11. Shroob State (e_shroob); [The Shroobs invade the Mushroom Kingdom from the western Bean Bean Kingdom, just like the Aztecs. Need I say more?]

    12. Kingdom of King K. Rool (e_kremlin); [According to the original "Donkey Kong Country" games, the actual land of the Kremlins was destroyed in a fight against the Kongs. As such, according to "Donkey Kong LXIV", the Kremlins' base of operations was relocated to a floating fortress. It is a Kong and Kremlin Holy Site, because both want total submission of the other.]

    13. Star Spirits denotation (k_star_spirits); [This is the shield for the actual Star Spirits themselves, just like every head of religion has one of their own.]

    14. Star Haven (c_star_haven); The de jure county holding of the Star Spirits in k_star_spirits. This is a Holy Site of Astrotheology.)

    15. The Shivering State (k_s_shiver); [If one can unite both Shiver City (d_shiver_city) and Starborn Valley (d_starborn_valley), alongside the counties of Western and Eastern Shiver Pass (c_snowman_w/c_snowman_e), Shiver Mountain (c_shiver_mountain), and most importantly, the Crystal Palace (d_crystal_palace), one can fuse the entire thing into the very wealthy Shivering State. In "Paper Mario I", Shiver City is a republic watched over by a corrupt mayor who was famously crushed by a box of Toad Town souveniers. For the game, it's a one-county Republican Duchy unless it can be united with the Crystal Palace as a capital. To the east is Starborn Valley, also a Republican Duchy and a Holy Site of Astrotheology. Both are Republics. D_shiver_city holds Shiver City county and Western Shiver Pass. D_starborn_valley holds Eastern Shiver Pass and Starborn Valley county. Depending on your start date, D_Crystal Palce is abandoned (similar to Colonies in "Game of Thrones Mod" and must be reformed, because the Crystal Palace was a sacred temple for the Star Spirits, or must be unseated from the Crystal King.]

    16. Puni Eldership (k_puni); [In "Paper Mario II", the Punis live in a fortified tree in the center of Boggly Woods. They are tribal in nature and are united under one Elder, who ascends by Seniority. (As such, playing as a Puni only allows for Agnatic Seniority Succession, like the Mongols are only Agnatic.)]

    17. Petty Kingdom of Grass Land (k_1); [Level One of "Super Mario Brothers III". According to the "Super Mario Brothers Show", Grass Land enjoys the special privilege of both holding the Grass King and the Mushroom Castle, which is one of the canon baronies in Princess Peach's demense*. As canon gives no special title, the ruler of Grass Land is a king.]

    18. Petty Kingdom of Desert Land (k_2); [Level Two of "Super Mario Brothers III". Like Grass Land, the ruler is a king.]

    19. Petty Kingdom of Water Land (k_3); [Level Three of "Super Mario Brothers III".]

    20. Princely State/Principality of Giant Land (k_4); [Level Four of "Super Mario Brothers III". Unlike its prior three kingdoms, Giant Land is overseen by a Prince, not a King. All Giant Land provinces have a special flag that causes anyone and everyone born in them to randomly be born tall or a dwarf. If someone conquers it and moves their capital there, they and all their court gain the same trait.]

    21. Empire of Sky Land (k_5); [Level Five of "Super Mario Brothers III". Televized canon indicates that the Sky Land ruler is called an Emperor (similar to how Manchuria was an Empire in name while under total Chinese ownership). This is probably because he is physically above all the other kingdoms, hence the title's name, as a "king OVER kings". Sky Land has some terrestrial holdings, most famously its impenetrable Great Tower. For the game's purpose, Sky Land's sky parts will be in the far-left corner of the map on white clouds, just like Star Haven and the other celestial locations, with the sole exception of the galaxies, which will not be included.]

    -

I have to leave now, but I will show you the rest in due time.

    ______________

    * = For ease of use and a justification of canon, I hold that Princess Peach's Castle is the capitol and that it, similar to the RL Air Force One in the USA, is whatever castle Peach is in at any given time. Throughout the years, many, many castles have been added to the Peach's demense. The most famous castle is in "Super Mario LXIV", but the actual capitol is just north of Toad Town. There also exists a seat of the ceremonial Mushroom Retainers (the eight-Toad ceremonial advisors that redirect you to Peach in "Super Mario Brothers") headed by the Mushroom Chancellor who was unseated by Toadsworth. (In my head canon worldview, the Mushroom Chancellor is Toadsworth's brother and was unseated because Toadsworth was jealous that his brother was allowed to be Peach's Regent when Toadsworth was the one who raised her. In-game, this barony is held by the Mushroom Chancellor in earlier startdates and by Toadsworth in later dates.)

    Coat of Arms Shields: XXI-XXVI
  • Twenty Two Through Twenty Six!

    Continued from above.

    22. Wind Kingdom of Ice Land (k_6); [World Six of "Super Mario Brothers III". The television canon denotes the ruler of Ice Land by a special title: "King Windbag" or "the Windbag King". This name was also a pun because it aptly described the Windbag King's personality, but apparently applies fully.]

    23. Petty Kingdom of Pipe Land (k_7); [World Seven of "Super Mario Brothers III". The Mario Wiki claims that the Pipe King is supposed to be Nordic-themed/a parody of the Norsemen.]

    24. Empire of Dark Land (k_8); [World Eight of "Super Mario Brothers III". This is Bowser's homeland. The rest of the Mushroom World's petty kingdoms are de jure under the Mushroom Kingdom, but Dark Land is de jure under the Koopa Troop. Bowser's imperial title consists of but one full de jure Kingdom, this one, and scattered de jure duchies and other holdings all over.]

    25. Unnamed, undecided Wario state. The "Wario" series of games are very, very clear that Wario has a demense of his own. It's not very big, but it's there and it is insatiably wealthy. He also has a claim on Mario's Castle from "Super Mario Land II". In "Wario World", the chief villain was a purple jewel, who should hold a minor county nearby with permanent claims on all Wario lands.

    26. Yoshi's Island (k_yoshi); [Yoshi's Island encompasses the sprawling archipelago shown to hold the Yoshi demenses. Yoshis are tribal in all games showing a governance, including a Yoshi Chief in Yoster Isle and the Isles of Lavalava, so their mechanics probably work like the Vanilla game's pagans. Yoshis never fight and are very peaceful and harmonious, so they, like Jains, should not be allowed to Holy War or go on offense. Independent Yoshi states like Yoster Isle and the Isles of Lavalava are separate matters.]

    More to come.

    Giant Land
  • Just a few suggestions about the titles and some other random ideas.

-Giant Land/Big Island was ruled by a Prince and also by a King at one point. To resolve this discrepancy (and also to resolve the fact that Big Island was only important in Super Mario III), we could turn Big Island into King level title that's called "The Isles" and have Big Island as a Duchy within the Kingdom, which is the capital of said Kingdom as well. We could make a variation of "Prince" to be the name for Dukes in the Mushroom Kingdom. More on that later.
-Again, Pipe Land could be part of a larger Kingdom called "The Urban Kingdom", which contains all the ultra-modern cities in the Mushroom Kingdom (like the ones seen the highway stages in Mario Kart and Diamond City from WarioWare).
-I think the Mushroom Kingdom Cultures (mainly Human and Toad) should have custom title names. Dukes should be "High Prince(cess)" and Emperor should be "Imperial Princ(ess)". There are only two known rulers of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach Toadstool and her father "The Mushroom King". I think that the Mushroom King should be represented by having a custom nickname "The Mushroom King" while his title is still Imperial Prince.
-We could have an event chain that's kind of like "hold a tournament" except instead of a tournament it would be based on the various Mario side-games (Mario Kart, Mario Party ect). Each one would be based on a certain attribute (Karting would be learning as you need to build a fast Kart, Super Smash Bros would be based on Martial, Mario Tennis would be based on Diplomacy as you need to communicate with your Tennis Partner, Mario Party would be based on Stewardship and Mario Golf would be based on Intrigue because the image of sabotaging golf is hilarious). Of course you could win with random events regardless of your abilities or you might be able to bribe someone to do something for you ect. Lots of possibilities! We could have you and all your vassals, friends and rivals (even ones from other countries) could turn up to try and win the competitions for money and prestige. These events would be limited to once per character's life and would cost a bunch of money but give you lots of prestige.

    Shields XXVII - XL
  • Twenty Seven Through Forty!

    More shield information.

    27. Super Happy Tree denotation (c_yoshi_story); PThe Super Happy Tree is the temporal god of the Yoshis. Its uprooting and disppearence causes attrition and damage to Yoshi's Island itself and normally causes older Yoshis to face an early death (though eggs seem to be unaffected). It is an actual tree that grows in the heart (pun intended), the direct center, of Yoshi's Island. Yoshis value character, honor, perserverence, and dignity and see these as traits espoused when one is truly happy.]

    28. The Mansion (d_luigi's_mansion); [This is the shield for the duchy you can form when you successfully take over Gadd's Lair, Boos' Woods, the Bogmire Boneyard, and the Spooky Hilltop. At the start of the game, Gadd's Lair is independent, Boos' Woods is under fief from inside Forever Forest (I've always assumed the two were close because Gadd later shows up in Toad Town), Bogmire Boneyard is under (you guessed it) Bogmire, and the Hilltop will either be abandoned or under King Boo, depending on the start dates.)]

    29. The Hilltop (c_king_boo); [County needed for forming "d_luigi's_mansion". Grants huge bonuses if held by a Boo or other ghost. Starts either unclaimed (like the GOT Mod's colonies) or under King Boo, depending on start date.]

    30. E. Gadd's Lair (c_e_gadd); [County needed for forming "d_luigi's_mansion". Grants medical cures, learning bonuses, and general stat boosters to its holder. Brutally hard to siege (after all, King Boo never took it and it was literally on his driveway!), even harder to convert its religion and culture away from Astrotheology.]

    31. Goomba Village (c_goomba_village); [One of my personal favorite places in Mario, Goomba Village is the sleepy village where "Paper Mario I" opens. East of Miracle Landing (see next entry), Goomba Village makes up a part of the Duchy of Goomba Road. Goomba Village is very, very close to Toad Town. Any would be conquerer knows that it's a place to start. In addition, the only way to Goomba Village is through Goomba Road, which connects between it and Toad Town, make it easy for ambushes to be set. Highly nutritious Goom Nuts grow here and here alone, while its spiky casings make for efficient weapons.]

    32. Miracle Landing (c_pm1_opening); [This is the quiet, mystical forest clearing where Mario landed after being struck from miles above by Bowser with the Star Rod. Without the Star Spirits' direct intervention from their captivity and by using the last of their powers, Mario would never have woken. Miracle Landing is a Holy Site in Astrotheology.]

    33. Goomba Fortress (c_goomba_king); [In "Paper Mario I", the Goomba Fortress was the site of the first boss level. Here, you fight the Goomba King Goomboss* and his the Goomba Brothers that shire under him. It sits at the edge of a great, impassable gorge. Without controlling the Fortress and its retractable bridge, you cannot enter or exit the Goomba Road and get or leave Toad Town. Ergo, it is a very difficult building to siege.]

    34. This shield is a prototype for the Duchy you can form with "c_goomba_king", "c_pm1_opening", and "c_goomba_village".

    35. Unnamed Shy Guy kingdom. Not sure what I should do with it yet. Shy Guys' government varies on subtype. Normal Shy Guys follow a traditional military command structure led by a general. Jungle Shy Guys are tribal and among the most primitive characters in Mario. Then there's the Dancing Shy Guys... for this Mod's purposes, Shy Guys don't get a Lunatic trait, they get a Dancing trait.

    36. Shy Guy Toybox (k_general_guy); [Shy Guy Toybox is represented by a small blip next to Toad Town. It is bigger on the outside than it is on the inside, of course, so its levies are impressive.]

    37. Wario's Wood (c_wario_woods); [Wario's Woods comes from the game of the same name. It is a huge forest full of danger, bombs, and large creatures the serve Wario's every command. Wario annexed it by force in the events prior to the start of the Mod. In "Wario's Woods", a Toad (yes, a Toad) managed to end Wario's aggressive expansion by literally killing off every creature in Wario's army with the bombs Wario had left over. (I guess he didn't Core it fast enough.) It is de jure under "k_wario".

    38. Battle Canyon (c_battle_canyon); This war zone is the site of the "Mario Party I" level of the same name, claimed years ago by Wario, who initially enjoyed the fighting. Its two factions, the Pink Bobombs and the Black Bobombs, have been at war for generations and the scars of war are deep and visible. For Mod purposes, Wario's Battle Canyon is right next to Bobomb Battlefield. It is drifting de jure into Wario's kingdom, but is not yet there. Can you reclaim it?"

    39. Bowser's Keep (c_exor); [Bowser's Keep is the gateway to the Smithy Dimension. The magical Sword of Exor is still stuck in it, but it is deactivated for the time being. At the start of the game, it is the only county that is de jure under the Smithy Gang. At some point in the game, Smithy will be back. WITH WEAPONS!]

    40. Forest Maze (c_rawest_forest); Entering the Forest Maze grants your army brutal attrition and causes their Movement Speed to go down, to the point that it takes weeks to leave. You are likely to lose a lot of men here, unless you're a character like Smithy.

That's all I have for now.
