Normally, Naval and Air-Technics will be researched.
But does Japan really need the advanced Battleships of the "Yamato"-Class?
Untill the start of war against america in 42, the japanese player can reserach advanced fighter and expecially adv. naval bombers.
They will clean the sea from enemy ships.
Also the lower class-Battleships did have a better cost-effectivene than the higher classes, e.g. there is a class (sorry, don't know the name by head) which costs 7 IK with minister and hast 18 sea attack and 16 sea defence.
The Yamato Class costs 20 IK (?) and has 22 attack and 30 defence.
The disadvantages in attack will be compensated by the stronger naval bombers.

And the fee IK the Japanese Player can use to research in Land-Units to invade the USA.

Hmm, well that really depends, the US will have better fighters more than likely of a longer range, and as such can use islands in the pacific to keep those naval bombers at bay in part. To the Yamamoto BB, it may not be cost effective as others, the same could be said about most higher tech units though, and as stack size is limited it can be a worthwhile addition. :)

If i dont build Yamato BBs, i can save the IC of naval research.
This is quite a lots of IC, and this could be needed to build up a stong mots-army to invade the US...

Well that can be nice, as I said, it's a trade off, there are alot of options. :)

Should maybe something be done to make it worthwhile to build the most advanced ships? As it is now, they cost a lot to research, and takes one hell of a time (and IC) to build. When/if Japan gets them, it might be too late.

However, to my knowledge, the Yamamoto wasn't that much of a success in real life either, but I don't think this should matter too much, as it might have been put to better use given other circumstances etc etc.

Mybe it should have better damage and cost a little less? I think it should still take a very long time to build, they shouldn't be mass-produced.

IF the US players makes it possible for a successful Japanese invasion then you're playing with a NOOB.

Surface ships were indeed somewhat outdated by naval air in WWII so carriers and nav bombers should be dangerous even for Advanced BBs but imo nav air is way overpowered atm in HOI, especially it has too long range compared to real life.

Yikes!!

Careful with that idea, basically you're gambling that USA doesn't think you have the stones to try it, because if they think you might, it's no skin off their nose to prevent it:)

I would say as Japan, since you start with improved CA's already researched, stick with those, and then decide whether you want to go volume with DD's or subs and research better models. Maybe improved carriers, too, if you plan to build any. Also try to always be researching a naval doc and get all the cheap naval techs you can.
Put the rest of your research into air, infantry, and industrial tech, as well as electronics that benefit your navy or economy.

Your goal should not necessarily be to have the best of anything in particular, just as good or better than what you're up against when you're up against it.
Japan usually faces better opponents in succession, and it's IMO a good idea if your research timetable reflects this (ie. you don't need basic air to fight in China, but you should have it when/if you go for India; your starting navy should have no trouble with the Brits, but you will want upgraded ships with more org when you go up against the US)

That nails it right there. Worry about China, worry about France, worry about the UK. Appease the Russians. Once the USA enters the war, except this fact:

You're gonna loose...eventually.

You need to plan on keeping the fight (with America) as far away from your shores as possible. Yamato class BB's "covered" by CA's can really rip up enemy fleets, especially those juicy transports. I'm not advocating battleships, just saying keep in mind your overall strategic needs.
