I have just upgraded to 1.07b and found some peculiarities that I don't recognise from 1.05b:

1. Jay walking armies. Getting the order to walk, the sprite soldier starts moving in the opposite direction. The red green arrow shows OK and they end up where they should, so the disorientation is just a cosmetic problem.

2. No walking soldiers. Getting the order to invade, armies to move. There are several ways to get around the problem, seems random when these work: Giving a move order to a nearby friendly territory and after arrival give them a new invasion order, or Merge several armies into one and then moving all of them, or wait until another army has invaded and then move the troops, this must be a programming problem and seriously impedes making war (encouraging diplomacy?).

What's up?

I'm not sure I understood your post 100% but the answer to no. 2. may be that you can't enter a province that is heavily fortified if your force is too small to even cover that fortress.

1. ...the sprite soldier starts moving in the opposite direction.
Ths sprite just shows that the unit is moveing, not where to. No different in 1.07b then in 1.05b

2. No walking soldiers. Getting the order to invade, armies to move.
If it's like Delirium suggested, your unit is too small to cover the enemy fortress, this is not different in 1.07b to how it was in 1.05b either.

Huszics I beleive you are wrong, because in all the games I've played you could look at the sprite and see where the army was walking to. At least the general direction. I use it all the time to try to catch the fleeing enemy. It at least got the 4 N S W E directions and sometimes the 4 between that it seems (NE SE NW SW).
I've not upgraded with 1.07b so I don't know if the sprites are walking wrong now, but they sure did move right in my german 1.07a.

Hmm, never noticed this in either 1.05b or 1.07b. Though I distinctly remember cursing about not knowing where the enemy was fleeing/moving. Ofcurse it's possible that I have just missed it but I shure belive that I would have noticed.

Hey guys,

sorry I don´t visit here every day so there there is some lack in continuity:

In regards to armies not being able to cover a fortress, that is a good explanation, seems quite probable. Thnx for the help Del.

Moving sprites have always indicated the general direction *if* there was only one army present. If several armies are walking in diferent directions, only one is shown.
Cobos, you understood me correctly, the sprites starts marching northwards (I can see their backs only) when they get an order to move south and vice versa.

Huszics, if the sprite only was there to indicate movement, why are they *always* moving in the opposite direction, it seems odd? Never mind, it is only cosmetic anyway.

Another thing that has popped up after upgrading and starting an old game: my 18th century musqueteers are sometimes shown as 16th century halberders, so there is a mixture oo these two kinds on the map. In the 'war window', if I have three soldiers on my side, one of them can be of a different kind than the two others!

Seemingly this is only a cosmetic problem because I seem to be as efficient with both kinds, but it looked odd.

Your right and I'm wrong =(
My misstake probably comes from not playing at the closest zoom level, only higher, less detailed zoom levels (19' monitor... =).
Guess I'll just have to switch to max zoom when wanting to know where the enemy is heading.
Thanks for the tip.

Stefan

I always play on max zoom and 1 month/5 minutes, more gameplay for the money! :)

Seriously, it is I who prosper from your help and all the other guys on the board who have some inside info. The manual is a dread to try and penetrate since it mixes general historic information, background reasoning and actual gameplay into one big bowl of soup. Using it for reference is almost impossible. Thanks to the guys on this board I have actually managed to play the game, instead of just buying it.
