On steam (sigh - never too keen on Steam + Paradox),

BUT - I have been REALLY impressed. Not since Rome:Total War have I felt as engaged. And did the designers ever play play-by-mail games like Legends and the like? Something about Arthur reminds me of it??

I tried to register the game on the forum (having only HOI stuff so far) - but cannot find how to register this?

I find the tactical battles a little hard to control and understand what is going on. It appears troops keep running headlong into battle rather than waiting?? Ok on Beginner/Easy whilst working out the game - but imagine that will get suicidal on real levels.

Well done on a great feeling game, and I look forward to unlocking the story :)

Your armies will have some autonomy when it comes to auto-charging. There is a button that will toggle this on/off so you can set it to where you want while playing. It can be handy when ordering an offensive advance, and your attention is elsewhere, but if you want them to stay put and defend in a spot (with terrain bonus for example) then you'll want to switch it off for the time being.

More so than the TW games, or many others, activating the proper formations and options on your units is essential in KA (while just seemingly being some interesting extra options in that other series). Use the appropriate commands and always be sure to use the best ones for every unit's specific situation at any one time. I often change my unit's formations during battle, and turn that autonomy button on/off occasionally - often before starting the battle.

The game logistics take a bit of time to get used to...That having said, once you do, the armies suddenly "obey" your commands quite nicely. What prompts them to charge is coming under attack from enemy ranged units or coming within sight of an advancing enemy melee. The immediate solution to this is to toggle auto-charge to off position. Another way to handle this is to hide your units in woods or put a manual hold on them.

Once you get the hang of it, you will find that the game is great.

One word of notice, however: When spending points on your Warlord heroes, do not invest in Aura of Awe/Fear. They are both broken at this time.

Good gaming,

Practically you won’t be at disadvantage if you don’t register the game, so you can post on the forums and you can write to support@kingarthurthewargame.com if you have any issues. You just don’t get the game’s icon under your nickname.

Nefaro’s right, you can switch on/off each unit’s “Fire at will” option in the battle.

Thanks for your feedback, I’m glad you enjoy the game. :)

Any hints re province management? Is their a manual or guide around the place I haven't found - most of the in game help is pretty good, but I'd like to know a little more. It appears provinces have a number of ratings (Military, Loyalty, etc) - and just want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

In particular, I appear to run out of food a lot. I have two fullish armies, and about turn 40. Not sure on the "pace" of the game, am I going to slow - always choosing to replenish my armies after a big battle - or should I be constantly building up new ones?

Any other general Authur tips?

BTW - I'm trying to go the Christian Tyrant route.

Food is scarce at this point in the game, it is a common problem, there is nothing wrong with your game.
Don't forget that each winter in your stronghold, you can convert gold to food. Research and stronghold buildings can help too, try to focus on them if you feel the need to do it. Pay attention to the trade quests (like the miller's guild) that allow you to convert gold into food with an excellent ratio (much better than in the stronghold) - don't hesitate to convert as much gold as the quest allow if possible. When possible, use unneeded artifact or ladies (eeew...) in trade quests, instead of gold or food. Keep in mind that some combat quests on the map have bad penalties as long as they are on the map (it is indicated in the info window when you hover over the quest with your mouse on the campaign map) - for example, letting a samhain army free in a province will decrease its population (thus, its economy), you can easily tank your economy if you are not paying attention to those. Try to assign your best provinces to appropriate knights with positive traits, and give them artifacts, skills picks, and wives with corresponding bonuses.

It's hard to comment on your pace without knowing which of the main quests you have completed yet (quest progression is what drives the general progression of the game, the number of turns is more or less relevant).

Try to avoid losing men : replenishment are expensive, the best thing you can do for your economy is to master the tactical part of the game to minimize losses. The masterful strategies skill can help.

You don't need more than 2 full armies by the mid game, it is actually a good number - upkeep costs are steep, and you'll want to concentrate exp gain on your units and heroes, not spread out with tons of mono hero armies (stacking 4 heroes in one army is a common and effective tactic - some do otherwise, but it works well).
