Scenario: The Road to War (standard HOI) --- ITA
Settings:
Difficulty --- Easy
AI Agressiveness --- Weakling
Final Score:
Axis --- 794
Allies --- 207
Comintern --- 36
The final score looks impressive, but most of the damage done, by the Axis, was inflicted by Gremany, of course. I didn't join the Axis Powers until 1936, for one main reason: wanted to familiarize myself to the flow of the game and intricacies before plunging into mayhem.
There were several aspects of the game that proved to be real learning opportunities (difficulties): (1) economy/production, (2) convoys, (3) researching appropriate techs, and (4) desert warfare.
I gained a handle on unit production and diplomacy fairly easily. Also, where to deploy units was relatively easily. However, not really knowing how large a force my enemies could field led me to be cautious on offensives. Probably should have been the exact opposite.
Three areas that I almost completely ignored were: (1) naval forces, (2) air forces, and (3) provincial improvements. The latter was probably one I should have paid greater attention to. I don't really see yet how I was hurt by this failure, but common sense tells me I was hindered.
My biggest mistake was how I began the game, by waging war v. investing in research and provincial improvements. I should've used the first 2-3 years for heavy investments, then look towards expansion. I didn't realize either until I joined the Axis Powers in 1946 that I would receive techs from my new found allies.
When I did join the Axis, I was pitted against America in North Africa. I nearly had them pushed off the continent, but was routed in a massive counter attack that, coupled w/ a resource shortage of oil and rubber, knocked me out of North Africa. It was the Germans who opened the door back up for me by liberating one of my provinces and giving me about 15 divisions to command. This is where the game ended w/ Turkey, Germany, and me pushing back the Americans in North Africa.
All in all, the game was very fun, interesting, and addictive.
