Hi guys and gals! I’m new (more or less) to Paradox games but I saw JosefVStalin’s let’s play and at $10 I just had to check out Kaiserreich! Now I have a few questions:

1) I started by getting my butt kicked in the Spanish and US civil wars (good learning experiences) and then managed to win the US 5-way s*** storm as the good old USA turned fascist. But now I feel dirty and I want to start over and forge a democratic America. I can’t decide if I should just play the USA or go with the PSA and try to retake the east coast. Any thoughts?

2) What is a good force composition? I was thinking mostly motorized infantry with engineers, backed up by CAS and fighter planes. Fast and able to handle river crossings right? But maybe too weak in the Rockies? Actually is there a good wiki/page/post/pdf somewhere that explains the pros and cons of the different division types and brigades?

3) I can’t seem to figure out air missions. Sometimes my planes just sit there not doing anything no matter how I set up their orders and sometimes they fly all over the place even when there is nothing to do. What is going on?

4) I have a bug sometimes where the sprites for my planes get all messed up (stretched and looped diagonally). Is this a known bug?

Thanks for your help.

1) It's really up to you on that one, however one thing I would do (which I haven't done yet) is get the PSA on your side as the USA to make the war a bit easier and I think you can get them to rejoin peacefully or DoW them and force them back.

2) I actually suggest you stick with militia or infantry in the begining just to hold the line, then I would actually use motorized with LArm brigade for the country side, motorized with arty for cities, and mountain divisions for the Rockies (if you want to attack PSA). Also here is the link to the wiki http://www.paradoxian.org/hoi2wiki/index.php/Main_Page, some of it is outdated, however many of the basic ideas still apply.

3) The reason your planes won't move is because their org is too low, and I think weather also plays a role, as to flying all over the place, that is because aircraft missions are set to certain areas and will follow the mission in the area no matter what unless you cancel it. You can choose individual provences for your aircraft to attack, just be prepared to change orders frequently as the front shifts and enemy forces appear in different areas.

4) I can't help you there, I only use counters.

Hi Matthew, I will answer to the limit of my knowledge
1) No clue about that. Played a bit of KR but not in this part of the globe.
2) It mostly depends on what you intend to do. Motorized infantry should still do better in the Rockies than tanks for instance. Mountains would be awesome if you can afford the research time. There must be a wiki somewhere (google it) otherwise you can do it the hard way and browse through the in-game combat modifiers... that are most likely to change as you progress in researches.
3) When you setup the air mission, you indicate your planes should pursue the mission until a certain time as long as they have a certain amount of organization and strength. The last part being the reason why they some time carry on with their mission and sometimes not (they "repair" when not on a mission). Now that you understand why they are going on a mission or not, them doing something productive during the mission is a matter of enemy presence in the area you assign for that mission (being a province or a region). Enemy presence can be a unit or a factory, an infrastructure, a AA....

Yeah no way I would have made it the 2nd time if the PSA had not joined back up. I don't quite know why they did but yeah...

I think I get how air missions work now, cool.

Thanks guys!

Okay more questions:

5) What are the differences between the USA and the PSA government and event wise?

6) Are there any big differences in division stats between HoI2 (info on the wiki) and Darkest Hour/Kaiserreich?

You can look at the files themselves for unit stats, they are written in plain english in text files. You can also look at combat modifiers in modifiers.csv (open with excell, or you can also open it as a text but its slightly harder to read).

5) Well both the USA/PSA have the option to remain a democracy or go to a military cabinet. Obviously the USA is going to have more options/events. I don't think the PSA has an option to inherit the USA without annexation/occupation if you really want to do that.

6) There are differences to be certain. DH is a different, if similar game to HoI2. For the most part the concepts are the same. The stats increase respectively as the units get more advanced.

If you're going for a good newbie country, try the Qing Empire. You're away from the major powers, and have a decent sized army, and some comparatively weaker enemies to fight via event. It gives you a good feel for the game, combat system, and you'll get the chance to expand into a major power.
