Do anyone know why the Swedes was appointed princes in Kiev in 10th century? I tried to study their connection to Swedish merchants and warriors but not found out so much. Litterature tips in Scandinavian, English and German.

All along the Swedish traders/vikings routes they had bases, from witch they controlled the area. They functioned something like police, so everything was nice and peacfull. Then later when the trading faded off, things started to be more hostile, so the slavic peoples asked the former 'police' peoples in todays Sweden (Svea, Göta, Rus...) for protection and offered them to rule. The Rus agreed and some moved there...

For those who read Swedish the books of Mats G Larsson are pretty good I think (Rusernas rike, Ett ödesdigert vikingatåg + others). I think they are even available in a single volume these days.

Wasn't Rurik in the 9th century? And what do you mean 'appointed princes'? By whom?

Yes, the 9th century. At the time the Eastern Slavs found themselves without leadership and in constant strife among themselves. They also perceived external threats, so they invited the Vikings (specifically a band of Vikings who called themselvs the "Rus") to be their leader. The Vikings accepted and in 862 AD Prince Rurik became the first ruller of "Russia."

His royal line extended all the way to Ivan IV (Ivan the terriable). Ivan killed his only son in a moment of rage and ended the dynasty.
