Ghost units?

Version 1.05c

I'm playing Italy and have conquered great parts of Central Africa. Every now and then I'm having problems with enemies crossing the Sahara or other low to zero infrastructure provinces and capturing a few of my provinces. They travel slowly over the low to zero provinces, but really fast once they reach provinces with normal infrastructure. Once they reach the Mediterrannen they stop and die.

I think I heard about ghost units in previous version and I'm not sure if it's the same problem.

It's not a show stopper but it's a bit annoying and tedious having to recapture these provinces.

Has nobody else noticed this? I have a save file if anyone's interested.

They can be actual units as opposed to buggy ghost units. It is possible to keep reinforcing the units to keep them alive. Costly but possible.

I'm more annoyed about the slowly retreating units that go back to their original province after a combat defeat. In that case you have to leave units in the province that you have just conquered because the enemy's retreating units started their failed attack from that province.

Well, I don't see how this can be done differently. Remember, this also goes for your units. There are several options:

1. They retreat to a random province controlled by their own forces at the time of the start of the retreat. This province may have changed hands by thew time they arrive.

2. They retreat to a random province controlled by the enemy. In this case, you risk losing a province unless you've got ALL neighbouring provinces covered.

3. They beaten army just surrenders. Not a good option. Especially if it happens to the player ;).

4. They retreat to where they came from, like now. When you've conquered the province they came from you have to leave a guard. But you might just lose the province to a counter-attack before the beaten army returns, thus giving the enemy a chance to save the beaten army. The best option IMHO.

Ghost units

I've seen something similar.

I play germany (a lot) and during the attack on russia a 0-0 tank unit suddenly scoops from north to south going from one province to another in one hour no matter the infrastructure or terrain. Usually, it clashes into one of my armies and is dissolved without any problems - but at you describes, I now have to go all the way back and recapture the provinces.

The unit seems to come out of nowhere, though sometimes it comes from an army I just evaporated.

It's always russian units - never french or british, and the phenomenon usually occurs twice or thrice in a campaign (barbarossa).
I'm playing 1.05.

The 0 strength tank bug is caused when a unit dies due to attrition during the retreat. You can just bomb them one to get rid of it. It most common in Russia and Africa because of the large provinces and crappy infrasructure.

One thing I want to add is, you can manually create a ghost division, by removing all division from an army, then click on a ship, then the ghost division remain, and you can use it to run wild.
