Ah! Another client reffered to us by our friend the Vulture. 
Thanks for the info I have refered others to this possible contributer to the save game problem. However some have said they get this save problem even when trying to load the save games that come with the game. Maybe what we have here is two different causes, and this is adding to the difficulty of pinning down the solution.
