Achievements are a solid part of gameplay, they give motivation and long-term goals for a campaign. Sometimes I find myself playing just to complete interesting achievements in PDX games.
But compared to EU4 and HoI4, Victoria 3 seriously lacks in this area. Despite game is around for 3 years we don’t even have achievements for strong European powers like Portugal, Belgium, or the Netherlands. Not a single fun or creative achievement for mid-tier niche nations like Denmark, Greece, Hanover, Norway, Bavaria, or the Italian minors either. It’s kind of disappointing that once you form Italy or Germany, there are no ambitious achievements left to chase. And Spain, a major power with tons of historical potential, only has one achievement for the whole game.
We even had a South America specific DLC released years ago, and what did we get out of it to improve replayability and provide goals?
Stuff in Brazil like:
Change government to a Republic and implement Universal Suffrage
Complete the A Journal Entry to preserve the monarchy
Make X the ruler and complete B journal entry
And that’s basically it. What about the other South American nations?
Form Peru-Bolivia by improving realtions with your subjects and click one button
Form the Federation of the Andes
Where are the achievements for Uruguay, Argentina, or Chile? These are potential regional powers with unique geography and flavor and yet they got no love. No specific achievements at all.
So yeah, we have two main problems: Lack of variety and a lot of lazy, shallow achievements. Don’t get me wrong, there are some super fun and creative ones, like:
Grander Colombia, Republic of Death, Barbary’s Back, Luxurious Luxembourg, Piratini, not Pira-tiny
But we need more like those, not just generic checklist tasks. Let us play these nations with huge goals and go crazy with alt-history. That's the magic of PDX games.
