It's 2018 and Paradox games still lack any form of colour blind support whatsoever, in a game where the most used map modes are a mess of colours. It's ridiculous, frankly, especially when the games have been out for more than log enough for an in-house solution to have been at least trialled. A good filter would work if no one can be bothered putting the effort in.

Failing that, letting modders change eg nation colours without affecting Ironman would let Paradox continue to just ignore the issue by having other people do it for them.

I love these games but it's really frustrating to have what otherwise feels like a great company pretend my issues don't exist.

I only hope EU5 or CK3 or Shogun 2 or whatever they do next at least acknowledges these issues and doesn't keep pusipus them to the side because "it's too much work".

Important post.

Especially given the fact that Paradox games attempt to impart information visually by way of maps, graphics, textures, icons, symbols, and colours.

One hypothesis is that the Paradox artists have superiour colour vision.

Thus, the artists may conclude that the information presented by their choice of colours is informative and decipherable by the customers.

Here is an article describing how some people have better colour vision that others.

Women perceive colors better than men https://www.news-medical.net/news/2004/09/02/4472.aspx

Map mode colours in CK2 had been adjusted in later patches.
At least i recall one or two developer team responses on complains about irritating map colours in more recent patches.

Well, there are colourblind mods which deal with some of the issues. But, yes, there are definitely map modes which are very difficult to read usefully (I find the development map mode basically useless because it's not coloured in any consistent way and uses a combination of red, yellow and green). Nation colours are basically impossible to fix, though, there are simply too many nations for them to all have easily-distinguishable colours, even for people who aren't colourblind.

The artists and designers are people of good will and want to make the best possible product.

Not being a member of such a development team, I cannot really imagine all the demands to make the best possible product.

There are probably a myriad of details to tend to, to include using the best variety of colors.

It would be interesting to learn more about game design, especially the role of colors, textures, fonts, symbols, icons, etc to convey information.
