Lag in Multiplayer with players from other continents - is there a fix?

I like to play multiplayer games with my lads and we're a pretty international group. Our multiplayer games run fairly well, but when my friend from the US joins (the rest of us are from europe), he can't seem to play with us because he always lags behind to two, sometimes even one speed. I know that this is due to the distance of our countries, but is there a way to fix this? We would really enjoy playing together. Thanks in advance for the help!
