Landless character continues to occupy holdings

In the midst of a Byzantine Empire civil war, a count declared independance from the emperor and occupied Dwin. The Emir of Azerbaijain then DoWed the count for his land and won. The count is now a landless courtier of one of the rebelling vassals, yet he continues to occupy Dwin's holdings. Shouldn't the occupation have ended or transfered to his new liege?

The already occupied territories won't change, AFAIK, but does he continue to wage the war of independence although he now is landless? Do you also have a save file?

He's no longer waging the war of independence. He's in the court of the count of Chaldea who is in the war to overthrow the emperor, but the occupied holdings do not count towards that war.
