Hey guys,

Just a quick question and maybe an observation...

I have an excellent game as the USA going, on Med/agressive, and everything has been going splendidly - except now ACW (no big deal, I think I "evented" my way out of it. Anyway, about 1906-1907, after annexing most of Mexico and leading the world by 1000's of industrial point ratings, my game crashed almost every month or so.

It seems, just like in HOI, that the later the game goes, the larger the save file gets (maybe - I am at work and can't check it), the more likely the game is to crash.

Has anyone seen this? Is there any solution - besides upgrading my 128 MB of memory?

It seems to have come out of the blue - after "years" of playing without interruption.

Please help if you can - it would be most appreciated.

128 MB of memory is not enough. Sorry :( All I can suggest is that you make sure everything else is not running (virus checking, mail, internet etc) and you make sure you've defragged the hard drive and got a healthy (500 MB+) page file available.

This is most often seen when there is a long standing China war going on (e.g. Boxer War) where there are hundreds of units in complicated situations.

I figured as much.

Thanks for the quick response, I've come to expect that from this forum.

If the China situation is really messy you might find the game is playable again by loading up the save game as China and using the neville cheat (hit f12 & then type neville) to set a "reasonable" peace. Remember to save, exit the game completely and reload afterwards

It worked for somebody else.

I thought about that. And I think that's about as good a remedy as I can use right now.

I'll try that when I get home and let you know what I find out!

Thanks again,

DR

PS. Is there a tool like the one used for old HOI patches that reduced the size of the save game. Or is that even an issue here?

The save game is very much an issue. Each save game is 10-12 MB so if you are in habit of saving frequently with a small hard drive you can easily make your situation worse.

I'm not familar with the HoI utility - could you point me at a link?

Sorry,
I don’t think it’s still around. It was used somewhere around 1.02-1.03 and was needed because there was duplicate information in the save file. I have it (I think) on my computer at home. If you want, I can PM you tonight with the name of the utility or anything else I can get for you.

But like I said, it hasn’t been needed for a while, so I doubt it is still around on the forums.

But I could be wrong.

Basically doing what Derek says will work. I run 128 MB (laptop) and the game works fine. I run on Normal speed, w/ no background programs running, have a healthy amount of space on my hard drive and de-frag regularly. But I do 2 other things that help my system performance a little 1) turn off the sprites and use the counters instead. If I feel there are to many units running around (ie late game), this seems to help by limiting the number of slow downs, but doesn't necessarily speed the game up any. 2) Also like Derek said, clean up your save game file by deleting old save games from the scenarios folder. I only keep 2-3 save games max, not including autosave and oldautosave.

The box requirements list 128 MB / 450 MHz as the minimum, so the game should run. Doing these things just make it run better. :)

EDIT: Spelling mistakes and wording.

Thanks!

I have had problems recently with it crashing (as I stated above), but during the beginning 70 years things went very well.

I will try as you suggest and see if that helps.

Oh - I remember that. That wasn't a compression utility but a truncation utility. It chopped a whole load of repeated data out of the file.

That won't work with Vicky I'm afraid. It needs all that data.
