I downloaded the game via gamersgate. On my laptop everything works as it should. On my desktop the launcher shows "program could not display website" etc. (In German). What might be the reason for this?

The most usual cause of launcher problems are issues with .NET in Windows. You might check with MS to see if there are any .NET updates that machine needs.

Note you can skip the launcher by running romegame.exe instead of rome.exe
