When I launch the game the launcher says "failed to update launcher" because it can't read metadata and says it's either their servers or my internet. My internet's working fine so is anyone else having this problem?

In the last 2 weeks I have been having this exact same issue, I have search everywhere online for a solution and removed and reinstalled the launcher so many times and still same problem. I discovered that the launcher will not update while I'm connected to my VPN. Does anyone know if this Is something paradox has done to stop the game from working with a VPN turned on. If turned of it works fine.

No, we do not prevent the launcher from updating via a VPN - why would we? But a VPN may for instance be using a bad or different DNS service than otherwise, for instance.

Turned off the VPN and it worked fine. Not sure what the exact issue was I've had some weird stuff happen with it lately. Thanks!
I use ExpressVPN and they say the same thing that there is no reason why PDX launcher should not work. But I keep getting the same error as the OP's post. When I disconnect from VPN it's fine, when I reconnect.I get the same error.
The server is indeed rejecting requests from cpatch.exe (but NOT bootstrapper-v2.exe!):
If you run the launcher via some other game you have that uses it (say EU4, HOI4, Stellaris) does the launcher upgrade proceed?
And what actual launcher version do you see? Current is 2023.1.1
How or why that would be I have no idea. I don't believe it is deliberate, and so far as I know it is only happening to this game (not others using the same installation of the same launcher). Weird stuff!

I only have Stellaris and HOI4, so can only test with these 2 games. It does give me the same error when I launch both games and when VPN is turned off both update. So it's not just Stellaris . I do have current Launcher 2023.1.1 installed. I have even last week reset my modem and router and completely wiped my computer clean and done a fresh install off windows just to try and eliminate possible issues, but still have the error when launching the games. ExpressVPN cannot find any problems on there . So i can only guess the problem is with the launcher. The OP also replied saying turning of their VPN fixed the problem as well. So I don't know what else I can try.
As you are on the latest launcher version, the error is spurious and you can ignore it for the time being.

With the new launcher 2023.2 still cannot upgrade without VPN turned off. Still have same issue, the new launcher did not resolve it.
Weird how this is only being reported in this one game's forum. Does it happen with the other games you have that use this launcher, HOI4 and Stellaris say?
Now with launcher 2023.2 still same problem. It only started with this problem in the last 2 updates, before them it was fine. Maybe some change in the previous update is causing the problem.

I am using 2023.2.1. I guess this is just one of those issues that will remain a mystery. Hopefully in newer versions of the launcher it might fix the issue. thanks anyway.
How can we update the launcher if the windows time is incorrect? My windows time is set by my domain server.
Basically, you can't. Can the time on the domain server not be corrected?
You're in the launcher beta programme. Opt out of that, see if it updates to 2024.1
