Playing as the Robert d'Hauteville, Duke of Apulia, date: 1 September 1078. Robert is now aged 63, and I'd started the play of the game with him at the earliest standard date setting available (1066).
I just now while playing had a notice pop up that I now have a new heir. I view the details, and find that the new heir is his bastard son, Bohemond d'Hauteville (aged 20), now showing as legitimized, instead of the second son (and first legimate son) Roger d'Hauteville (aged 17).
These characters are already born at the start of the game, and so Bohemond has the status trait of bastard by default. I had much earlier during play previously changed the realm's inheritance to Agnatic-Cognatic Primogeniture from the starting Agnatic-Cognatic Gavelkind.
The problem? I'd never chosen to make Bohemond legimate. At the time of the pop-up notice, Bohemond was living in court in Wien, Osterreich, having been married off to an eligible female (Adelaie von Babenburg, daughter of Duke Ernst I of Osterreich) within the court of Duke Ernst I of Osterreich. So the bastard son that became legitimized wasn't even living within my realm, and I never selected the option to legitimize him before or after he'd grown to majority and had been married off. Bohemond at the time of the event has already sired a 2 year-old son, Ruprecht von Babenburg, which carries his mother's name because his father as an unlegitimized bastard can't pass on the d'Hauteville name. The marriage was not matrilineal, so that establishes that Bohemond was not legitimized at the time of his son's birth.
So it appears the AI was able to have a character's bastard son legitimized without the player of the father's chosing. This is game-changing for the player's game in this case. Is it possible that the AI code allowed the Duke of Osterreich (the current liege of Bohemond) to make the change, despite not being the bastard's father?
This is the base Crusader Kings II game with the two pre-order bonus DLCs, purchased through GamersGate.
I have now saved the game following the change, please let me know how I might be of assistance to you to determine the specific cause of the issue and its resolution. Thank you.
EDIT: And yes, I realise that I can invite Bohemond back to the court of the Duke of Apulia in my specific game, but the issue is his legitimization without his father's player's choice
