There has not been much ADDEG action lately so I've been trying some pick-up games on Valkyrie Net. Recently, I've encountered the player SniperViking who usually asks that France be removed from the list of selectable countries. I asked him why and he says that he has had too many bad experiences of the French player doing such things as evacuating France or choosing a Vichy option that he doesn't like.

Of course, having a human player as France will make things more difficult for Germany but so what? The point of playing the 36 scenario IMO is the pre-war and early-war action. France was more significant than the isolationist USA, say, and so will interact more with the other players like Germany in an interesting way. A lot of these pick-up games never actually get past the first session and so it's best to focus on the early action rather than agonising over the possible balance issues later in the war when the USA has entered (if it ever does).

Anyway, I'm often keen to play France when I don't want to be committed to a long game and don't like having this option removed. Vive la République!

If you don't want to be committed to a long game, why would you want to start a 1936 game? If it is quick action everyone in the session is looking for, play one of the war scenarios.

In a 1936 game players intend to finish, having a human France is a good idea as long as you have a set of rules the French player must abide by. In SNCG-1 (Sunday Night Casual Gamers), we have the USA player play France until his fall, then he takes over the USA. The French player is not permitted to have more than 10 land and 5 air units outside mainland France. Is not permitted to build forts or AA prior to war being declared (except for maginot line provinces) and is not permitted tech trades. This keeps things from getting out of hand and lays the foundation for a good long game.

A human France is a great thing, helps keep things organized and lots of fun, no reason to prohibit it.
