I have a Linksys Router RT41P2-AT and have had nothing but trouble with connecting to MP games. I tried to connect with a buddy of mine, and was never able to. I changed a ton of settings within my router config, but just couldn't get the damn thing to work...

Here are the options under my router settings.

{Setup} {Security} {Access Restrictions} {Applications & Gaming} {Administration} {Status}

Now, I figure that it will be in Apps & Gaming, so I will omit the rest of the submenus. I have multiple other programs that work, so I assume that it must be in the apps and gaming section...

Here are the Submenu's for Apps&Games:

{Port Range Forward} {Port Trigger} {UPnP Forward} {DMZ}

Now, I'm smart enough to know it should be in the first two. Here's the options for PRF...

{APP} {Start} {End} {Protocol} {IP Address} {Enable}

Now, I have read all the appropriate threads, and have been trying to use the following settings:

HOI2 2300 2400 TCP a Ip adress enable button checked

Hoi2 47624 47624 TCP a IP address Enable Button checked

Port Trigger settings

Triggered Range Forwarded Range
Application Protocol Start End Protocol Start End Enable

HOI2 TCP 47624 47624 TCP 2300 2400 checked
HOI2 TCP 47624 47624 TCP 28800 29000 checked

I have gotten the settings primarily from the FAQ's, and am unsure why I can't get it to work. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. I haven't even played my first MP game yet :( .

oh I did have one possible lead for ya. Did you say you had Norton installed? Talked to my IT guy here at the office and he said it may be blocking, even if off. Might wanna try uninstalling it and see if that helps (or off if you never turned it off). IT guy said that it was blocking stuff and not reporting it in a log, and this had a lot to do with him selecting a new AV program.

Anyway.... just another lead for ya.

I'm not impressed by Linksys but I've yet to find a "good" router. I've bought and tested: D-Link (two models); Cisco (expensive); Belkin and Linksys. None of them are "good".

Norton is notorious for all kinds of problems. It's one of the first things I recommend to junk and never let touch your systems (I support several companies that have Norton as their standard and it never ceases to amaze me that international mega corporations continue to feed Symantec money).

Hey guys,

Thanks for the help. I'm not going to get rid Norton, nor am I going to buy a new router, I got mine for free from AT&T for my VOIP phone service. I have seen that thread, but the settings menu are different from what my settings are. The router I have is a different model. Also, am I supposed to do anything in my port range forward, or just the Port Trigger? And should I do anything with my DMZ?

I am able to connect to Valkrienet, and my game crashes when I try to join a game. CTD, and maybe 20% of the time I get the message that no connection could be made. And I did try to disable Norton, which had no effect...

Okay

Here are the Submenu's for Apps&Games:

{Port Range Forward} {Port Trigger} {UPnP Forward} {DMZ}

Now, I'm smart enough to know it should be in the first two. Here's the options for PRF...

{APP} {Start} {End} {Protocol} {IP Address} {Enable}

On the port range forward you have to forward two specific ranges,

2300-2400
28800-29000

fill these in the start and end fields, protocol is TCP/IP, the IP address is your NAT IP, in Windows XP go to the cmd prompt and type:

ipconfig

You should get a NAT IP in the 192.168.x.x range, this is the IP behind your fire wall, or router, also listed will be another IP labeled as the default gateway, in the 192.168.x.x range, bot the NAT and the default gateway will be different by a single digit.

The NAT IP needs to get the game data forwarded over the the two ranges, and enable.

The trigger is specifically 47624, or you can simply open the whole range if you want to.

UPnP is a nightmare, make sure that is disabled, turned off etc, it'll hose things up real good.

DMZ is a last resort, it forwards any TCP/IP traffic that hits your router straight to your PC, opening you up to hackers etc.

If removing Norton (the ultimate virus) is not an option, leave it active, its actually more of an issue when its de-activated ironically. You will have to go to Norton's advanced settings, and tell it that the Paradox application, HOI 2 is a trusted app and to allow it to communicate any way it wants. Even then Norton may still cause trouble, but your settings have to be right also.

Oh yeah, after you change your settings, check your interface for a save and restart, save and reboot, something along those lines, because if you don't save your settings, none of the changes get activated.

And another problem you are going to run into, boy am I a wet blanket or what, is going to be that VoIP you got going. VoIP is something like shoving a cow down a garden hose, it is a bandwidth hog. On your broadband connection, what kind of upload and download numbers are you getting? Because if you have VoIP active when trying to play, its going to eat most if not all of your bandwidth. For HOI 2 to work, you have to have a minimum upload of 128K available to be a client, and over 500K if you hope to host, as HOI 2 is a bandwidth hog in its own right. You may have to disable the VoIP to play, but if you have a beast of a connection you may not have too. In addition, you may not be able to disable the VoIP as if you do that, you may not have any phone service at all.

In this same MP forum, I have a posted a step by step process, check that out also.

Specific questions? Send me a personal note on the forum, or email me
at TYLERANDGILLIE@msn.com

Hope this helps.

:rolleyes:

Linksys is know throughout the world for its multiplayer problems, buy yourself a decend router, or maybe a firmware update helps you.

I use Linksys routers at two different locations and have absolutely no problem connecting to MP games. As a matter of fact, I've not experienced problems connecting or playing any other MP game using said routers. So I put forth that the routers are "decent" and the problems people have stem from ignorance on how to configure them.

I suppose if several Maytag washer customers complained about the washer not getting their clothes clean even though they neglected to hook up a water source, you'd advise them to get a decent washer?
