Ok, I know Paradox doesn't support running their games on linux. This isn't a complaint so much as it's an question if anyone's managed to get HoI2 running on linux.

I've had good success in the past running Paradox games (EU2, HoI1, Victoria, CK, CotN) in linux using Transgaming's WineX, but HoI2 doesn't work. The game installs (although it takes a LONG time. Almost 3 hours. The process bar stalls seemingly forever at 25%, but it keeps copying files and eventually completes). And then when I run it the video plays and then the startup screen runs and the music starts playing! (It was a little shocking to hear the music play, since the music never worked in linux in any previous Paradox game. I always had to load the mp3's into a linux mp3 player and use it to play the music in the background.) Then the main menu pops up. All looked promising until I tried to start a scenario. It just Cashes back to the Desktop. Every time.

So, has anyone had better luck at this then me? If so care to share what your using (Cedga? vanilla WINE? Crossover?) and the settings you used for it?

(ignore my .sig. I need to update it. I'm using Debian Unstable with Cedega [the program formally known as WineX] 4.0. I know there are newer versions of Cedega but my subscription ran out a few months ago. If I hear a report or two that a newer version works I might have to look into upgrading. I'm running the North American (Atari) version of HoI2, patched to 1.1)

I'm still working on the problem (namely I'm going to try to install the free CVS version of Cedega eventually), but I thought I'd post an update. I found a work around for whatever the problem is, although its a slightly annoying one. I used Cedega 4.0. After experimenting a bit I discovered that the game runs if, from the main menu, the first thing I select 'tutorial' then start one, exit it, then start a scenario. The game seems to work fine then, but if I don't load the tutorial upon first starting HoI2 then it crashes. Weird.

Someday soon I'll try CVS Cedega and see if that gets rid of the problem (whatever it is).

EDIT: If you want to try the same thing I did, I'm using point2play, and these settings are needed: Managed [yes]; desktop [chose a size. 1024x768 works for me. Using 'No' means it runs fullscreen instead of in a window, but I find it doesn't reliably capture keyboard input that way]; Winver [win98 or winme. win2k and winXP don't work (you just get a blank screen)]. Also rename the music and avi folders like outlined above. The music seems to cause particular problems with Cedega.

I'm using Point2Play 1.3.2 and Cedega 4.2.1 on Debian Testing/Unstable. When I try and install the HOI2 1.1 patch, it says that HOI2 is not installed. (Yes I selected the correct Program Title in the Install popup.) Do I have to do anything special to get the patch installed?

Thanks.

Hmmm... I have installed HoI 1.0 under window$, then patch it, then reboot to linux and play it (and don't forget to rename avi and music directories :) ).
I have window$ installed for such situations, and for il2 sturmovik :)

I followed your suggestion and did the patch install in windows. But then I copied the Hearts of Iron 2 folder from my windows drive to my .point2play directory. That seemed to do the trick. Thanks.

This were all real nice suggestions folks! Then.. I'll go ahead and buy the game for sure :)

I just installed the latest Cedega (4.3.2) and HOI2 (1.2) and found that they don't work together. I reverted to Cedega 4.2.1 and it works with HOI2 1.2. Just thought I'd let other people know.

Maybe something in the configuration that could be changed?

You can leave HoI2 on windows partition, but in that case, you need to mount that partition with exec option (see cedega manual or faq).
Of course this windows partition must be fat32 cause linux lacks decent write support for ntfs(blame M$). I rather like to save my games.;)

I'm using Cedega version 4.3.1 and hoi2 works almost perfectly except in multiplayer games, it just crashes when I should create or join a game. Probably cedega is missing some crucial windows networking parts or there's simply no support. Either way this isnt big deal, I mostly go single anyways.

Tip: If you are using ALSA for sounds, you should definitely change default wineoss.drv to winealsa.drv from confs even alsa supports oss-emulation. Solves lots of stability issues.

Btw. This's my first post, I just had to register when I saw this thread. So be merciful. :)
