London, Roman Britain, 100AD
Barely a handful of London's rivers are still visible above ground, two thousand years of civilization have seen most of London's ancient rivers now covered over, hidden under pavements and streets. This map represents London as it was at it's beginning, when the Roman's arrived.
This map also returns the River Thames to its original width. The modern Thames is only 300 metres wide as it flows beneath London Bridge, centuries of land reclamation have narrowed the Thames, but there was a time when it was almost one mile (1600 metres) wide. This map sees the river return to how it once was, before mankind came along to teach it a lesson.
From Wikipedia...
"Despite the evidence of scattered Brythonic settlements in the area, the first major settlement was founded by the Romans about four years after the invasion of 43 AD. This only lasted until about 61 AD, when the Iceni tribe led by Queen Boudica stormed it and burnt it to the ground. The next planned incarnation of Londinium prospered, superseding Colchester as capital of the Roman province of Britannia in 100 AD. At its height in the 2nd century, Roman London had a population of about 60,000."
