Maintenancy cost

I hav a question regarding maintenancy cost. As Tuscany in my latest game I have an army of about 100 000 'menn'. This army costs me 5,5 ducats a month. Tuscany now consists of 5 provinces and I hav a tech level of 12/10/6/6. I recently set my eyes on Napels but to my surprise this two province big country fields a army of at least 170 000 menn and they only pay an maintenance of 1,5 ducats a month. They have worse tech level than me.

Question: How come Napels pays lower maintenance than me while they have got a bigger army?

BTW, it looks like most AI countrys pays lower maintenance than me.

I think maintainance cost is related to your buy cost. Their troops might be cheeper then yours (even at the same tech level).
They may also not have 100% maintainence, to save money.

They do have 100 % maintenance, I've checked. The diference in cost could not possibly be that large?

Test it. Ie change your tech level, troopcost & inflation to theirs and see what you get.

Also, make shure armies are made up from the same components. Eg 1000 Cav is much more costly the 1000 Inf.

Ok, I'v don what you asked me to do. They had the same cost and inflation, they where just one level lover in land tech. I reduced mine tech, and it did'nt matter at all.

BTW, they have got more cav and cannons than me...
Also, Naples to maxed out cash, and had zero reaserch.

Perhaps it also depends on the difficulty setting ?

No, I'll take your word for it. Just wanted you to make shure instead of assuming (thats how false rumours & misinformation gets spread =).

Though I would like hear an explanation from Paradox on this issue... =)

Has it always been like this and is it a BUG or a late tweak to balance AI (before 1.08 the AI had a LOT of bankrupcies ALL the time, which ruined their techdevelopment totally since the 1.07 patches which increased techcosts. With 1.08 however they go backrupt VERY rarely). IOW I have been suspecting that there is something fishy going on somewhere in the AI lately.
