I was browsing the EU2 forums, and I ran across a great idea.

(This may or may not belong in the multiplayer forum, but I believe it is more appropriately entitled to the general discussion area because there are more users frequenting this area)

I don't know if this has been done before, but here is my proposition:

I want to start a game, involving multiple players (potentially everyone that plays hearts of iron II and that frequents these forums :)).

I want us to take turns, sequentially, transferring the save game from player to player via email.

The first player on the list (that is yet to be compiled), starts up the grand campaign, vanilla version 1.2, with manpower fix, and plays for approximately 1 year, then saves the game, and passes on the save to the next player, and so on, with approx. 1 year's (no more than 13 months, no less than 11 months) gametime for each player.

What is needed before we can do this, are a number of things:

-I need to compile a sequential list of forumites wanting to play.

-I need the emails of all forumites on the list (send me your email *via private messaging*, indicate your interest to join the list *via this thread*.)

Note: Please don't send me your ISP email adress, unless you trust me, use hotmail, yahoo mail, any free email service etc.

Note 2: Please don't ask for MY email address, you will learn it when I send you the saved game, and thus all you'll need to do is play your turn, attach, reply.

There are a few preset conditions I would like to establish beforehand.

-I am the first player on the list (which means I get the most mundane and boring year.....I could make it interesting.... :))

-I am in charge of managing this operation-I manage the save games, you email them to me, I send them off to the next player on the list etc. (That way, if Fred fails to play his turn, and doesn't send his saved game to me (because he forgot or is just too lazy, or was hit by a falling asteroid on his way to work) , I can just skip Fred, and send the most recent saved game to Bob-and things continue to run smoothly :)

-Each player, upon receiving the most recent saved game from me, has a MAXIMUM of 30 days to send it back, or you may be skipped :)

-Each player, upon finishing their turn (or during their turn), saving the game, and emailing the save to me, writes a brief after action report (AAR) using this *.txt template:
AAR Report Template

Then, that report is emailed to me, preferably within 1 week of ending your turn.

Note: It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a plain, systematic week by week, or month by month description of what happened. If something significant happened, go into some details, or just go quickly over it, if nothing happened, just say "nothing happened", keep it simple and stupid :) We can always Jazz it up later-there are many talented writers around here, maybe we can nominate one for the final MPC1 AAR compilation...

To Recap: ALL I need, to get this going, are the following:

-Your honestly expressed interest to play (and you shall thus be added to the list-first come, first serve- i.e. first person that posts their interest is first on the list (after me of course :D),
and a private message stating your forum name and email address.

Note: The list will ONLY be compiled AFTER I have everybody's emails accompanying their interest to play. (You will be added to the list in order of posting your interest, not how quickly you can pm me)

And all I ask of you is this:

-You have a MAXIMUM of 30 days to send a saved game back to me upon receival, or you shall be skipped.

-You have a Maximum of 13 months and a minimum of 11 months in-game, to do whatever you please....

-You choose ANY nation to spend your year on, even one a player prior to you has guided.

-no time limit patch is a mandatory requirement Get it here:
No Time Limit Patch

And of course, having vanilla hoi2 version 1.3 with the manpower fix (don't know if this is applicable to 1.3);

-Go to your hearts of iron 2 directory,
-go to the "db" folder,
-go to file "misc.txt" and open it,
-locate the sentence "# Reinforcement Manpower Cost Factor 0.8"and change the value to "0.4"

is a mandatory requirement.

***Players will be added to the list, up until the 25th of november (GMT)-this is when I wish to start the game***

This thread is now OPEN for RECRUITMENT and CLOSED for SUGGESTIONS.

This is an interesting idea!

Why not let different players play which country they decide?

e.g. '36 as one part of Spain, then '37 as Japan, then '38 as China trying to reverse what Japan did in '37, then Germany in '39 and then as Britain fighting for survival, and so. This way you could end up with a real challenge of having to fight back from a bad position.

Done and done, and I mean DONE! Upon loading the game, each player will be able to see what nation was guided by the previous player, so your suggestion would work perfectly.

P.S. Are you in?

I would like to join... but let me see if I understood right: I'll have to play one year of the game in less than 24 hours???

If yes, I would like to say 2 things:

1) There is real life, kid.. and it isnt HOI2

2) Give me a pre-war year then ;)

Ok, as I'm still open to suggestions, I will change 24 hours to 72 hours. Is that better?

And because you're the first person to express interest, you will be top of the list! Just below me. 1937 a good year for you? Sure it is....

And I'm no kid...

72 hours is much better, indeed... Especially for the guys that will do the "War years"...

Both '37 or '38 would be great years for me to play...

"Kid" was just an expression ;)

Once you see your name on the list, pm me your email where you want to receive the save game.

And use the link in the title post to download the AAR template, after all, what is the point of this venture, if we don't get to hear what happens/happened throughout the campaign.

This is a really interesting idea, Vlad - I thought about doing something similar to this with SimCity years and years ago, but never got around to it. And I'd love to take part, except there's no way I could go through a year of game time (even one of the early ones) in 72 hours - a combination of work, the wife, and a really slow computer would make it impossible for me. Hope you'll post the AARs sometime, as it would be cool to see how this turns out. Good luck!

Well then, I may have underestimated the time it takes to go trough one year. How much time would it take you on average, for 1938, a prewar year. If its at least under 1 week and no more then I will add you to the list. You could be an exception. I don't want to limit potential participants with the 72 hour deadline. I just want it to be the recommended timeframe most should strive for, if it will take you more time, advise me and I'll make an exception. :)

Hey Vlad - thanks for trying to be inclusive. I think I could complete a not-too-combat-intensive year within a week - in my current game as the US I've managed maybe 2 or 3 months a night (say 4 or 5 nights a week) during the early years, and perhaps 1 month now that I'm kicking the s**t out of the Italians. So anything before 1941 or 42 I should be able to finish in a week, depending on who I play. Just a question, though - what's the "no time limit" patch? What does it do, and where do I get it?

I love the idea just one question what does the manpower thing do exactly. Put me down name is Immelman email: immel17@hotmail.com. I am warning you however I am fairly new at this game.

Thanks

The manpower 'thing' fixes a bug in patch 1.2, where it caused you to loose too much manpower when reinforcing your units after combat. 0.8 is just too high. 0.4 is a much more realistic value, so you should change it.

I've added a link to the title post of this thread. Just follow the link and download the patch, its a small 30kb file.

Then put it in your hearts of iron 2 directory, where the hoi2.exe is, and run it. It will patch your exe, and allow you to play beyond the 1948 time period.

If you want, make a backup of the exe before you do this, just in case you want to change it back at a later date.

Hey. You're all good to go. I've put you down as player 5 on the list. Thus you will get to play through 1940 as any nation.

I'm glad we have another player. I was kind of getting worried at the lack of interest. Only 15 more days from this post until recruitment is closed. And then we can begin!

I already have my 1936 turn played out. I've tried to make it.......interesting.....
