Now, i'm PRETTY sure (Obviously not 100%) that there are gonna be mercs in the game, but I was wondering if there is an infinite supply as long as you have the cash, or more like Lords of the Realm where you can only hire some if they are around?

I really hope for the last one.:) That would be somewhat like EU2 too, where one could come to a point where there were no more mercs to get for a short while.

Snall,

I definitely hope for the latter. In this period even more than the first two centuries of EU II, mercenaries overwhelmingly outnumbered and certainly outmatched household and peasent armies. Particularly in Italy, and toward the the end of the thirteenth century throughout Europe.

The bands and companies should be dynamic-with reputations, leaders, etc., and their term of service should be limited. Moreover, there should be a (fairly low-contrary to popular mythology, soldiers of fortune have often been extraordinarily loyal and courageous on the field) possibility of treason and pillage within one's own lands.

Wishful thinking, perhaps, but the game would suffer for the lack of it.

Indeed. In fact, the possibility of trason should only be real if a player misses the payment for his mercs (that's what triggered it, usually).

As for their hiring, that is a design decision, but I would go for two options: pre-generated (historical) companies that could be bought for a price - like an auction - or then have a "hire mercenaries" button, which would generate a few random companies for hire*.

*: in effect, you would announce you want to hire mercs, and you wait to see who wants to enlist.

As for they having a limited term of service... a five-year term would do, but you should have the option to renew it if desired (a good part of this era revolved around making the mercs more attached to their employers, particularly in Italy). The company should disband when its leader dies (of old age or otherwise).

All in all, I think Paradox will probably portray them in a good way. :)

Mercs - being paid for? - Hmm, maybe ;)
Having a reputation and all that - Hmm, perhaps ;)

I thought I saw it somewhere that you could, but I can not find it now...

You might find a review of screenies posted in this forum by Johan to be beneficial. ;)

The Vangarian guard? Or somthing else? Also, don't make fun of any spelling mistakes...

To be completely honest,

In this period, wasn't pretty much everyone technically a mercenary anyways except for knights who owed you fealty and who knows how many unfortunate peasants? From what I understand, all those men-at-arms were basically professionals who went around being employed by one master after another, even the yeoman archers saw action in italy!

It varied greatly by region.

Certainly Italian campaigns were quite heavily "staffed" by mercenaries, and may other areas frequently employed them as elite guard. Other areas very rarely employed them - notably areas where the feudal contract made it unneccesary. The heyday of the mercenary was towards the end of the CK era and early part of the EU2 era (France, for example, was the first European nation to establish a perminent professional army in the mid 15th century).
