This isn't so much an AAR as it is a war story... but here it is anyway.
At about 8:00 pm this evening I was all set to storm Poland. (Playing Germany, VH/F) Figured it would take about 15 minutes and then I'd go catch some beauty sleep to get ready for the week ahead.
Welllll.... this is the first time I've played VH/F on HOI2 1.2 and for some dumb reason I left only 3 divisions in Stuttgart. Next thing you know, as I'm closing in on Warsaw and shredding the Poles the French come smashing through Stuttgart with 27 divisions.
At first I just started dropping divisions back west... like 9 or so. Then it became apparent I had a BIG problem on my hands. By the time I stopped the French advance they'd cut a huge swath into Germany, taking Leipzig, Munich, and Stuttgart on their way to Berlin. Thanks to Mannstein and 5 Panzer divisions I held them one province south of Berlin. In the meantime I'd just polished off Poland and Strat-deployed all my divisions westward. In a daring maneuver I deployed 70 half-organized and battle weary divisions on either side of the French flank, right at Stuttgart and Cherbourg-- both of which were heavily fortressed (Stuttgart with two and Cherbourg with 10) I went for a nasty pincer move to cut off the French deep in German territory. Man, that Maginot Line is naaaasty. It took 55 divisions to overcome 3 frenchies in Cherbourg. 55!!!
After a looong battle (at least 5-6 days) my divisions gained control of Stuttgart and Cherbourg.
But that was only the beginning of the end. I still had 27 French divisions deep in Germany and another 30 piling up at the Maginot Line. I sent my Panzers and Mobile Infantry sweeping back around to Berlin while my foot divisions and engineer brigades dug in. Finally, a month later, I mopped up the last of the invaders. The nice thing now is that I won't have to blast through Holland and Belgium cuz I control Cherbourg
.... but man. What I figured would be a 15 minute (6 day game time) campaign turned into a 2 1/2 hour nail biting race (took 1 month in game time.)
While I was running around exhausting myself the Soviets built up a huge army on the Eastern Front (which I left all but undefended except for a few Slovak divisions.) Should be interesting when I fire up the game tomorrow. Any other experienced players been caught off guard and whupped like that?
