As there were a few players asking in the GD forum if this or that system would run the game, I set out to perform the 'usual' challenge: going far below minimum specifications ("Boldly go where no man has ever....etc." insert theme from Star Trek here). I have an old PC connected for lighter purposes (ie. everything but post y2k games).
Minimum specs according to the gamebox:
Pentium III 450 Mhz (800Mhz+ recommended)
Win98, 128MbRAM (512+ recommended)
900 Mb HDD space
4Mb video card
DX 8 (9 recommended)
Tested setup:
PI 200 Mhz w. win98
64 Mb RAM
2 Mb video card
The game needs about 0,9-1 GB HDD space depending on the harddisk. About 0,1 can be freed up later by removing the intro and the music. Plus going low on RAM means you need more virtual RAM. However, it weasn't much about 0,3.
There's no particular gain by going below the recommended DX 9.x it seems.
This setup was used to run EU and HOI too (but with only 32 Mb RAM). In both cases it was below the minimumrequirements allready back then, allthough minimumrequiremens were lower than those of HOI2, AFAIR.
How it turned out:
Installing took about 5 hours! (old HDDs and a slow controller). But the game launches perfectly normal (albeit a bit slow), the scenario/campaign loads OK too.
After that it's a matter of performance. The game is playable, but ia. interfacing feels like a very bad day at Vnet, if you know what I mean.
So what can we learn from this? Except that some nerd had his PC running for 5 hours during night to make HOI2 install on a piece of museum equipment? Absolutely nothing! It's just that players are testing HOI and HOI2 from almost any imaginable angle and this is one of them. For me this has become a tradition (but next game is supposed to be with a 3D engine according to rumour so this will likely be the last one on my granpa PC).
Well, one more use though: those of you out there with minimum or less than minimum requirements who wonder if the game will run, can probably rest assured that it is possible, but that actual performance in-game might be poor. So it's pretty much up to your patience and demands on the gameflow.
I doubt anyone would consider running HOI2 on a weaker system than this one (but ofc. you're welcome to try to beat this 'record').
