Inspired by Thure's MAP+ mod which, unfortunately, never got released, I decided to make my own map mod for CK2, and here it is! It's not even close to complete -- many regions are missing, unfinished, or in bad shape; there are also no working sea provinces -- but I figured that with CK3 being released soon, I might as well show off what I've got now and see if anyone's interested enough for me to continue.

Be warned: this mod is not really playable. There are lots of bugs. The "declare war" button somehow disappeared. "Character 0", rather than serving as a placeholder, exists in the game as some random Polish guy who hasn't been born yet, holds every defunct title in the game, and occupies every vacant position on my council and can't be fired. Random invisible Russian tribes sometimes invade Egypt from the Sahara and end up conquering a bunch of provinces because any soldiers in those provinces are invisible and armies can't travel to them. Sometimes the Holy Roman Emperor will flood the notifications tab by revoking some random barony 278 times. (It doesn't seem to have any effect.) Also I had to remove some provinces from the map because they were causing CTD's when looked at, like some kind of digital Medusa. I don't know what caused this to happen.

Also, this map is HUGE. There are loads and loads of new provinces, and a lot of vanilla provinces are left in because I was too lazy to remove them... uh, had technical difficulties. There will probably be lots of lag to match.

In addition, a lot of regions of the map are in really bad shape. This is partly because, when I started working on it, ~4 years ago, it was originally supposed to be a map of the ancient world. Over time, the focus kind of shifted to the vanilla CK2 time period, but there are lots of regions (*cough* Egypt *cough* Upper Mesopotamia) that I never fully reworked to match this change. So you'll have to kind of ignore the fact that Cairo is called Memphis and there are random counties with Etruscan culture or whatnot. But apart from all these numerous flaws, I think the map I have so far is pretty nice:

ATTRIBUTIONS before I go any further:
- Credit to Diadochi Kings for the base map.
- I also copy-pasted the Arpitan culture from HIP. EDIT: I removed this temporarily, pending permission
- Finally, I made use of Elvain's excellent work here in mapping France, Bohemia, and Poland.

To all the people mentioned above -- Many thanks!

Below are some region specific previews:

De Jure duchies:

Note that the provinces of Liège, Colditz, Leczycza, and Kashan are not working correctly. I don't know why that is. On the other hand, Ojan, Dehestan, and the provinces in Pomerania are working fine -- it's just that I haven't added files for them in the provinces folder.

Also, ignore the duchy of "Assyria". That's left over from this mod's earlier incarnation as an ancient map.

Holy Roman Empire:

Hall and Gars aren't working correctly for some reason. Also ignore the Valcamonica exclave of Verona; I've since moved it into Milan where it's supposed to be.

I forgot to add the localization for "PROV3908" aka Altmark

France:

Italy:

Oops. I forgot to rename the province of Hernica. It's a holdover from when I was making an ancient map.

Iran:

Hungary:

(I didn't do the duchies for Hungary so this is just the culture map)

Ireland + Wales:

I'm not really showing much of England because it's a total mess. Scotland is extremely incomplete.

Spain/Iberia: (sorry, no Portugal yet)
ck2_19.png

NEW 8/27: Did a lightning round and finished Valencia, Jaén, Cuenca, and Toledo, in that order -- that means I can show off the rest of Iberia!

Russia: (right now sad and lonely all by itself)
ck2_23.png

There's more, of course, but I'm just showing off the good at least halfway decent parts. Again, Egypt is an anachronistic mess, the Maghreb is woefully incomplete, Byzantium is kind of ugly and full of anachronisms, and England is a weird mashup of whole shires together with lower-level divisions because I can't figure out the best way to represent medieval English feudal magnate holdings. Parts of India are good, but it's all disconnected and full of holes so it's not pretty.

Again, I'm mostly posting this here because Ck3 is coming up fast, and I don't want this thing to become irrelevant before it's even released (it might already be too late for that), and also I would like to see if there's enough interest to potentially continue. As such, any feedback would be extremely welcome!! Please let me know what you think, even if it's just to say that it sucks. Any corrections would also be very helpful.

EDIT 9/2: I have received permission to make use of the Diadochi Kings base map as well as Elvain's cartographic resources, so I can now share this mod! (I'm still waiting to hear back from the HIP people so I removed the Arpitan culture temporarily; this means there will be a bunch of counties with "no culture" but otherwise it should be fine.) Check the attached .zip file to download.

I've also done some work tidying up existing parts of the map; most of the provinces that were not working before have been fixed. (Most of these turned out to be caused by duplicate provinces or misnumbered province history files. Aargh.) I also added various new provinces, mostly in Northwest Africa. Check it out:

ck2_3.png

ck2_5.png

(Morocco is still extremely incomplete)

Unfortunately, this tidying up also (re-)introduced a minor but annoying bug: all provinces that share a number with one that got added after I started work on this mod now show up with the wrong name. At one point I fixed this by copying over the localization files and commenting out the conflicting provinces, but this meant that a lot of events ended up without text, so I got rid of the copies I made, but this brought back the conflicting names. So now a bunch of provinces show the wrong name, resulting in some silliness like Merv displaying as "Coast of Aquitaine", but gameplay shouldn't be otherwise affected. Let the record show that I suck at modding.

Uh, guys, I think we took a wrong turn somewhere

Thanks,
Trinculo

5 days ago I asked about any mod that would expand / add more counties to medieveal Europe on Discord and now we have this. The odds!

Looks great! Keep it going!

Edited the main post to add links to attributed sources, as per Elvain's suggestion -- and also because, in an uncharacteristic burst of speed (seriously, I'm both impressed and frightened), I went and added several duchies to Iberia: Valencia, Jaén, Cuenca, and Toledo. That means more screenshots to share!

The province La Mancha is kind of... questionable... but I couldn't really find anything to split it up further. (I used this map as a reference for the surrounding provinces.) Also the duchies of Toledo and "Extremadura" (working title) are kind of wacko and still works in progress.

How many provinces is this map supposed to have compared to the vanilla one?
