I was a bit annoyed with the combat in Vanilla Stellaris as it seemed too one-dimensional. Fleet compositions didn't really seem to matter. Also, Battleships with XL weapons dominated with some special exceptions for Corvettes with torpedoes. I did some reading on the forums and it seems like some others shared the same sentiment, and there was few uses for Destroyers and Cruisers beyond a few niche roles during the middle of the game.
I initially created this mod just to tweak the evasion/tracking numbers to make Destroyers and Cruisers more viable options even late into the game. I ended up making additional changes all for the sake of more interesting and tactical combat. I grew up playing Starcraft, so this is the type of "rock-paper-scissors" balance I attempted to achieve, where all ships and weapon loadouts have strengths and weaknesses.
The end result has more ship sections, some balance changes to existing weapons, multiple new weapon families with specific combat uses, a new combat computer role, AI fleet and weapon preferences, better defense platforms + "defense stations" and "fortresses" (essentially large and extra large defense platforms), along with some combat visual tweaks.
I've tested this on two different machines on Vanilla 3.01 with no problems with ACE (Aggressive Crisis Engine, which is another fantastic mod for more challenging crises). Any and all (respectful) feedback is appreciated, and I hope you enjoy it!
