Hello everyone! I'm RetconCrisis, and I'd like to showcase some stuff from a mod that I'm working on called Carthago Delenda Est, which is basically a 150 BC (604 AUC) start date, in case anyone is interested.

In 150 BC, much of the map in Imperator Rome was divided between powerful yet numerous states all vying for power, though Rome at this point was quickly heading towards becoming the undisputed power of the Mediterranean. Thus, we’ll start off by taking a look at the various corners of the Mediterranean that were embroiled in war in 150 BC.

    20220429220420_1.jpg

First, let's take a look at the namesake of the mod: Carthage. Carthage is in a rough spot; having lost the Second Punic War over half a century ago and losing Iberia and it's Numidian allies, Carthage has lost even more land to King Masinissa of Numidia since the end of the war until now, the most recent loss being the Punic cities of Tripolitania. As a result, Carthage in 150 BC is flanked by the Numidians by land from all sides.

    2IjLqGMB5RQlXEky8IliHnXmqDqNmSIDdgZiylFHLMOrkkLLozq3izLzBBnVqgeoveHUPTMYqn8icm8I56k7M4QEJwXLEt_ArP3AMF9xIk5lt2RMmNCs3odsuQUGD-VQ619XjGY_

Even worse, although Carthage has paid off all of its war reparations, the treaty signed with Rome at the end of the Second Punic War also states that Carthage cannot declare offensive wars, or else Rome can declare war for violating the treaty. This means Carthage has to provoke its targets into attacking first, or deal with two enemies at once. The Roman Republic's main strength is also its weakness: Rome's abundance of socii (Italian allies) makes naval invasions clunky for the Romans, and also decreases the levies available to Rome in Italy. Thus, if Carthage can prevent a sizable Roman army from gathering on land, then they can win the war from battles alone; I have even seen an AI Carthage take back Sardinia and Sicily if they have a high enough war score.

    1-f7z7QKACcJ2XjZ0Z2Eog8B7xmuXZxkj_s2Dr17ym5tVr-6LLyUkYUolLD97zhPdxKbRnItswnZJm2aSIUPjJLE9-3Pc4UkgUJNPyZQi2-SIST7WGXRe4GIGr0wkQaa9HUMCYCz

Additionally, if Carthage does decide to declare an offensive war, they will have the choice to convince Rome to back down, and in turn Carthage will end all of its offensive wars and make peace with the defenders. However, the war-eager Romans are less likely to accept this offer of peace. And if Rome does declare war, expect the Numidians to try to grab as much land as they can while Carthage is distracted.
    ___

Next, let's take a look at the eastern Mediterranean. The kingdom of Macedonia was dismantled by Rome in the Third Macedonian War and split into four client republics. Although the aristocrats who now possess political authority are in favor of this move, most of the Macedonian people are angry at the various restrictions placed on them by the Romans and long for a reunited Macedonia.

    o3PY4q8SVQGfJ7h0PPnLAfvwr06Zfic0wRQ162kFVp89H7J19MKx0ETcuncJo_woVidonC0YeTRvPqhbTuu1HuloV3XbA0f98OjFhS6UXMiTmFqMfepL9jtFk3ithazM9sSJ-Wkr

Thus, when a pretender by the name of Andriskos claims to be the son of the last king Perseus, making him the heir to the Antigonid throne, many Macedonians rally behind him as Andriskos wages a war to unite Macedonia. The Romans initially underestimate the young pretender and will not immediately send troops to deal with the revolt, which can give a newly-revived Macedonian kingdom some time to build up enough strength to face the inevitable war with the Romans.

Farther to the east are the former Diadochi, the Ptolemaic and Seleukid Kingdoms, which are both in the midst of a great war involving several major powers. A young boy named Alexandros Balas and his sister Laodike were brought before the Roman Senate as supposed children of the late king Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The man who brought them before the Senate was Herakleides, who held a grudge against the current Seleukid king, Demetrios I Soter, for killing his brother Timarchus when the latter revolted in Media. The Roman Senate approved the boy and gave him their support, and other states followed suit. Not only was Demetrios already unpopular among his own subjects due to his drunkenness and cruelty, but other states like Pergamon, Cappadocia and the Ptolemaic Kingdom also wished to see a weakened Seleukid Kingdom.

    SiqtkSETF-_AobBhcF2Kmf8fEa8z3u-PunHTZLLdqCksPJ0XADjfg_qJIxXJExr-wfv6Hjs_P1nduQdmD1Rl7PGw3rOqRoCPhaOsmAGvRXX5Cwm2p3fvBpHc7A0WWKYsToPjQ5k2

In 152 BC, an older Alexandros landed in Ptolemais-Ake, leading a mercenary army supported by the kings of Pergamon, Cappadocia and Egypt. By 150 BC, Alexandros had seized much of the Phoenician coast, his territories reaching as far north as Seleukeia Pieria. This causes even the Maccabean leaders in Judea to side with Alexandros in the war in return for an alliance.

For gameplay purposes, if Alexandros’ Seleukid Claimant army is able to seize the capital city of Antiocheia, a battle will ensue in which Alexandros kills Demetrios and wins the Seleukid throne. However, Alexandros is content with ruling only over Syria; this allows several local dynasts to breakaway in Mesopotamia, the most notable of which is the city of Seleukeia, which is the most powerful of these dynasts and historically remained independent even when the Parthians invaded the region. The governors of Elymais and Characene also break away, but there is a chance that the governors will seek Seleukid protection and request to become tributaries under the new Seleukid king.

    LjvmnuUnoIBaeVWMvbXQRzgPlsqDi9gUq_S-mGJn-T89QrxKf7EUktMyqkWb0si2UZWCE-on3kylx251b1Tn_XHqwJwrQ78pURaEK4CDsjTZJcF_FRrTZhvq3uJO9QsdR5VQRBOA

This results in a much-weaker Seleukid Kingdom; thus, a player playing as Egypt, Pergamon, Cappadocia or Judea will want to help Alexandros seize Antiocheia in order to prevent a much-stronger Seleukid Kingdom under Demetrios from steamrolling their own territories in the future. Despite facing a large coalition, I have seen the Seleukid AI win the war fairly quickly, so while it may be challenging at first, the war can certainly be won playing as the Seleukids.

Even if Alexandros wins, however, stability in Syria is not guaranteed. The son of Demetrios I flees to Crete after witnessing the deaths of his father, mother and brother. This Demetrios II will return in the near future to avenge his father and take back the Seleukid throne…

    Parthia, Pergamon and Pontus
  • Hello again! Now, we'll look at some of the eastern half of the map. First, I’d like to highlight some of the ruling characters in the regions of Persia, the Caucasus, and Anatolia. The main reason I am writing all of these paragraphs is to get an idea of the different starting countries with unique characters and the stories behind them.

Some time in 150 BC or shortly before, the Seleukid Kingdom lost control of the satrapy of Media during its civil war, which allowed the Parthians to swoop in around 150-148 BC to seize Media and then Babylonia.

    7iNaFSa8zlZd_hK6y_57YMOtUurGjBS3gS1EAj8SkJ3_uDIeP6VEV6wp6OxgqkCfeOC1XnIpAbWa76GP_wHSTY3Dc9_FciwSbhIp7QkwXCBAvYT14ODRG5TrJ8gEunjUnKRHdk3w

Parthia is led by Mithridates the Great, who has greatly expanded the Parthian kingdom into an empire at the expense of the Seleukid and Bactrian kingdoms, having recently defeated the satrap of Carmania as well as the Bactrian king Eukratides in Margiana. The first Parthian ruler to take the Achaemenid title of King of Kings, Mithridates went on to subjugate Atropatene, Media, Gedrosia, Persis and Babylonia, even capturing the Seleukid king Demetrios II in the process. Thus, Mithridates has very strong stats to reflect his historical achievements, something that Parthia players must take advantage of while the great king still lives.

In Armenia and Anatolia, three families of the Orontid dynasty rule over their own separate kingdoms. In Commagene, King Ptolemaios is the son of the last Orontid King of Armenia, Orontes IV; Ptolemaios is therefore the last direct descendant of the original line of Orontid kings. Thus, Commagene can restore the Orontid Armenian kingdom, though this will be a great challenge for players since they will be flanked on all sides by more powerful kingdoms. Ptolemaios of Commagene also claimed descendance from Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire, and is thus the only ruler at game start to have the Achaemenid bloodline.

Orontes IV was overthrown by Artaxias I of Armenia in 189 BC, who was another descendant of the Orontids who established his own Artaxias dynasty. His son Artavasdes now rules over the Armenian kingdom in 150 BC. Artavasdes’ brother Tigranes historically succeeded his brother after his death, and an event around 140 BC will trigger the birth of his son, Tigranes II (also known as ‘the Great’). Tigranes the Great would go on to expand Armenia and all but destroy the Seleukid kingdom, and an event chain will allow for the possibility of Tigranes II’s ascension as King of Kings of Armenia.

Ruling Sophene is Artaxias I's nephew Arkathias. Arkathias' grandfather Zariadres was also the father of Artaxias; Zariadres and Artaxias had rebelled against the Seleukids in Sophene, then divided Sophene and Armenia between the father and son. This familial relationship with the king of Armenia gives Sophene a small opinion boost with Armenia at game start.

Iberia is ruled by Mirvan I, who married into the ruling Pharnavazid dynasty and rules over several royal governors, one of which being the former kingdom of Colchis. While Iberia's mountain passes to the north and south make it a defensible position, it must be wary of an expansionist Armenia to the south, which had already taken much of Iberia’s southern lands around 189 BC. Also, the governor of Colchis, who is rarely ever loyal, is also likely to side with any pretenders to the throne if no actions are taken to appease them.

    ___

Anatolia is another battleground of powerful kingdoms. The Zipoetid dynasty remains as the rulers of Bithynia. However, the current ruler Prusias II feels threatened by the immense popularity and charisma of his son Nikomedes, and also desires to make his favorite son of another wife the heir to the kingdom instead of Nikomedes - these circumstances may lead to violent relations between the father and son. Furthermore, Bithynia is also surrounded by the more powerful kingdoms of Pergamon and Pontus.

    kDB0FSwKQFbcReL98yCSNievBul53SIz2LzarpVYXudfus8riE15HR-j8OnZPh1biewqVmUN9p3z5rqAftAHWrVZXfAr7Gk-jaPxllJvzcEz3vypofYlwslpaPUXK3WmFpx4PKoZ

Even so, Bithynia has the opportunity to expand west towards Thrace, which is ruled by the Odrysians; the Odrysian king of Thrace, Teres, supports the Macedonian pretender Andriskos while barely holding on to a much more decentralized kingdom. The Caeni are independent from the Thracian kingdom at this time, but three other tribes are subject to Thrace.

There is also an influx of Scythians in Thrace, with the Scythian peoples of Scythia Minor starting with their own tag north of the Thracian city states and next to the Getae.

The Kingdom of Pergamon expanded greatly after helping Rome defeat the Seleukids in the Roman-Seleukid War of 192 BC, with much of the Seleukid territory in Anatolia granted to Pergamon by the Romans. Additionally, the Galatians were finally and completely subjugated in the Galatian Wars; although the Galatians were formally under Roman suzerainty, their ally Pergamon has instead acquired the Galatians as a tribal vassal. Of course, a player as the Galatians (and sometimes the AI) may break away from Pergamene rule and continue their conquests in Anatolia. On the other hand, Pergamon will have the option to turn Galatia into a loyal and hardened mercenary state.

If very (very) specific conditions are met, Rome even has the chance to inherit the entire kingdom of Pergamon, as they did historically, when Pergamon is an AI. However, this will almost never happen…

Another pro-Roman kingdom in Anatolia is Pontus, ruled by Mithridates V. As one of the more powerful rulers in Anatolia, Mithridates V is married to the Seleukid princess Laodike VI, and their daughter is married to the great king of Cappadocia, Ariarathes V. Many other ruling families during this period have royal marriages with each other, which provides a small opinion boost between the countries at the start of the game, though this opinion modifier quickly decays as tensions rise between the major powers.

    RopcGb16INW9WI-e0Jtuzql_6JQRMtP7-FmvqK0qoG-O8EkGwc0EM-m4FJuqC_U-Uw4IY0vlYQ7BSKaeWIsPIVFceuAxZN4TMvqlej9vdB0MXNKr0LGXWdZFFHpZU0HbfKL-QgPx

An event will also trigger the birth of the famed Mithridates VI. It is said that his birth was marked by a bright comet that illuminated the entire night sky, a sure omen of the greatness that was destined for the young Mithridates VI. An event chain will also provide the circumstances for Mithridates VI to ascend as the king of Pontus, though some poison and unnatural deaths may be involved. Mithridates VI will also be blessed with both the Seleukid and Mithridatid bloodlines; an event down the line will even give him a chance to claim the Achaemenid bloodline, as he had claimed that he was descended from Cyrus the Great.

My next post will be about Bactria and India, as well as the lands of the Saka and the Sarmatians.

Hello everyone! I realized I haven't shown the full map yet, so here's some more of it.
Let's take a look at Bactria and India, as well as some of the surrounding regions. Bactria is ruled by Eukratides the Great, who had restored the Diodotid dynasty by conquering almost all of the Euthydemid rulers of Greco-Bactria. Though his kingdom once stretched all the way to the mouth of the Indus River, he was recently defeated by the Indo-Greek king Menander of the Euthydemids. Now, his kingdom is limited to just Bactria alone.

    wVYrZStFpvb8nZaXrWbGEgoFMqBGWJZOEDDwbP_KkRTztP-yitE52Dk4r4DsIL1z2EauahVXNnR8IYdmXLTw_T2uU9seq5q0xlejdlx-PVocFw1VRgrP3DtHBrd7H3Rarm1lN0px

Bactria is also pressured by the Saka and Yuezhi tribes to the north. Bactria will be faced with migrating Saka as well as Saka invaders, many of whom may have already migrated as south as the Indus by 150 BC. The Yuezhi, even more numerous than the Saka, are also a major threat, and a weak Bactria without the great Eukratides on the throne will be vulnerable to a Yuezhi invasion event chain. Fortunately, since Bactria recently warred with the Parthians and the Indo-Greeks, Bactria starts with a truce with both powers.

    SvN88bBnPAeztDWra4X8D69cgIebCeih5uojo_LO8NcwdLJznOlFvzOw7_G3Paj324J-ePXIXBAKmQ0UT1O_7Putq6h5mfQMSEzY12-YmbVPZKF7_wsIh5mEGIIGhD4qXjQg7nJ1

Besides external threats, however, Eukratides must also be careful of threats from within. While his son Plato may have co-ruled with him in his later years, Eukratides' other two sons secretly despise their father and wish to have the throne to themselves. Thus, after the year 145 BC (609 AUC), if either son's loyalty drops too low, they will take extreme action against their father, greatly affecting the stability of the kingdom.

To the east of Bactria is the Indo-Greek Kingdom, ruled by the famed king Menander I Soter. Having restored Euthydemid dominance over Greco-Bactria, Menander has advanced further east and has acquired tribute from the Indian subject states of Patalene, Mathura, Kaccha and Saurashthra. Menander has conquered even more of India than Alexander the Great, and coinage shows he likely pushed east as far as Pataliputra, the capital of the Shunga dynasty (and the former Mauryans).

Another thing that Menander is famous for is his conversion to Buddhism, which is noted in Buddhist texts. Thus, not long after the game starts, Menander will have the chance to adopt the religion after his famous discussion with the Buddhist sage Nagasena. If he becomes Buddhist, several events will also allow the player to turn the Indo-Greek kingdom into a distinctly Greco-Buddhist state. The kingdom will also acquire a new treasure, the "Ashes of Menander," upon his death if Menander chooses to convert.

The Indo-Greeks' main threat is the Shunga Empire of Magadha. In 189 BC, Pushyamitra Shunga overthrew the last Mauryan emperor in a coup and established himself as the emperor of the remaining Mauryan lands in northern India. The Shunga and Indo-Greeks often clash in large wars (which is a perfect time for the Bactrian kingdom to retake its lost lands from Menander). The Shunga emperor Pushyamitra is also in the process of performing his second Ashvamedha, the horse ritual sacrifice that an emperor performs to prove his divine legitimacy and right to rule the land. All Shunga and Magadha empire rulers must also perform this ritual when a new ruler ascends to the throne, and this event chain has varying degrees of success. The ritual can also be performed by any Hindu nation with at least 100 territories via decision, once per ruler.

Besides the Shunga empire, another major power in India is the Early Satavahanas. The historical situation of India in 150 BC is very muddled due to a relative lack of sources and conflicting interpretations. Although scholars are not in total agreement of the Satavahanas’ exact geographical and ethnic origins, nor the exact time it began, for gameplay reasons I have chosen to go with the theory that the dynasty rose from a crumbling Mauryan Empire. This interpretation would mean that the third Satavahana king Satakarni I ruled over the western Deccan at this time, though the Satavahanas are threatened by Kalingan expansion. Funnily enough, scholars aren’t in agreement on whether a certain historical inscription says that the kings of Kalinga and Satavahana were enemies or that they were friends during this time. So I guess it’s up for the players (and AI) to decide.

    qgE_sc4H-G2_PpcEwL2akXqP02adoqCRRGJIuPEqCYeSIE40vcF5lnAKmAhIMAhCAQ9-258IytlQy7kGdT0U0CegERueDH-VNZxV2oTJqKyN2Qpb9-XG9GB8rwnWyqNG91kqYew7

Speaking of Kalinga, the great ruler Kharavela may have been a contemporary of Pushyamitra Shunga. A patron of Jainism and one of Kalinga's most powerful rulers, Kharavela waged war to retake a Kalingan Jain artifact that had been seized by the Nanda Empire three centuries ago. Kharavela had even expanded so far west that he once defeated an Indo-Greek king. However, the Hathigumpha Inscription, our main source of Kharavela's rule, has very different interpretations between scholars, and most of his achievements were likely exaggerated, so it is difficult to accurately paint Kharavela's Kalinga Empire on the map in 150 BC (if he even ruled during 150 BC at all). Whether he ruled during 150 BC or not, gameplay-wise he is definitely a ruler who can prevent the Shunga from being the uncontested rulers of northern India, so he’s a perfect ruler to balance the subcontinent and provide an interesting start as a Jain empire.

    JFSVnArTmuB93T9c57pkN3ABPpudWWIKdjfFV3j0SKxcYJGKZTrP5bqSZuM0MNFHtYPSnGPeRtGJJyfnVa7Xku80XTre74HpJxNoZ3OkYAwOEpwgKH4hpT2nIuP83bD6yqVIrxdP

Southern India also has many more new countries compared to the vanilla start. After the collapse of the Mauryan empire, numerous kingdoms became independent across the southern Deccan and Tamilakam. The once-powerful Andhras have been all but conquered by the Kalingan emperor. Further south, the three Tamil Kings of Chola, Pandya and Chera continue to reign as the dominant powers of the Tamil country, each ruling over various Tamil chiefs in their lands. Expansion by the Tamil Kings is also attested in this period, most significantly by Pandya.

The island of Sri Lanka is ruled by King Dutthagamani of Anuradhapura, which is one of few Buddhist countries at game start. Although Anuradhapura was conquered by members of the Chola dynasty decades ago, Dutthagamani successfully defeated the Chola ruler Ellalan in an elephant battle and liberated Lanka from Tamil rule. Anuradhapura can also construct a Great Stupa, which historically began construction under Dutthagamani.

Anuradhapura also has many talented generals under its banner. Dutthagamani's brother Saddha Tissa had waged a civil war against him but lost; though Saddha Tissa fled, he later reconciled with his brother and became one of his foremost generals. Dutthagamani is also accompanied by his Ten Giant Warriors, ten great warriors who had served the royal guard since the rule of his father Kavan Tissa.

Lastly, let's look back up to the north. The Tarim Basin now has several more city-states compared to vanilla to represent the more divided nature of the region. By 150 BC, many of the city-states had fallen under Sakan/Khotanese rule, and some notable states are Shule (Kashgar) and Loulan. However, a key difference between these states from 304 BC and 150 BC is that the city-states are now under the suzerainty of the Xiongnu.

    gnzSnPqsfdvvoaj_c_zTVAkanLz-SELejT2JY0wCYh8dTQQ0fH5Kd4lI229fZ7bQpSJ8NjdqwnYG0C_CmLW0K9jLx4ECRFs_ZpzXTSTYRx3KPrpNI2qXhZkQmTYiC5GHfIrjsE32

The Xiongnu at this time are the largest steppe confederation the world has ever seen. Though looming just outside of the vanilla map, they can still influence the affairs of the states within the map. The Tarim Basin states will pay a yearly tribute to the Xiongnu; in return, the Xiongnu shall send an additional cohort led by a Xiongnu culture general in defensive wars. However, if one of their Tarim State subjects grows too strong, or if a foreign power completely annexes these tributary lands, the Xiongnu may lead a direct invasion of their own to retake the land themselves.

(Work on the mechanics of this off-map power system is still very early, so things may change in its implementation).

However, the Xiongnu are not the only off-map power that can influence the game. The prosperous Han dynasty will seek trade relations with the nations in Bactria, the Himalayas and Persia. Besides establishing trade relations and the first Silk Road, the Han dynasty of China may also intervene militarily for a particular type of heavenly horse in Ferghana…

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions so far, I greatly appreciate it!

    Britannia and Germania Map Changes
  • when will you publish next post in this page on your mod ?
I kind of wanted to add some more stuff before sharing some more, but in the meantime, I might as well share what Britannia and Germania currently look like:

    1648003007030.jpeg

There are still several changes I want to make, and some more tags in Germania I want to add, but I added the Belgae and several other tags in Britannia as you suggested. Although they may have arrived a bit later than 150 BC (though at least some of the Belgae had already crossed into Britain by 150 BC), I added them anyways since it's only a few decades difference, and it helps add some more flavor and interesting starts to the game.

    India Map + Indo-Greek Missions
  • Just wanted to add some updates for anyone interested. After some additional research, the map of India has been updated.

    India 150bc sample v2.png

Here's also a look at one of the Indo-Greek Kingdom's mission trees (along with some frankensteined mission banner art). The formable nation of India is one of the rewards for completing this mission tree. The formable will also be available to every other Greek nation whose capital is in India or Bactria.

    Laconian Missions
  • Hello all, I’m here with another update!

Another country with mission trees in the mod is Laconia (with new mission icons and pictures). Once led by the city of Sparta, the Laconian cities are now all vassals of the Achaean League.

Since the end of the Spartan monarchy and the submission of Sparta and the other Laconian cities to Achaean rule in the Laconian War of 195 BC, the Achaean League reigned as the dominant authority in the Peloponnese.

However, the Laconians had never grown accustomed to Achaean hegemony, and a major territorial dispute broke out between the Laconians and the Achaeans. Historically, the Laconians led a failed revolt against the Achaeans. However, the Roman Republic decided to punish the Achaeans for spilling Laconian blood against the will of the Roman Senate. When the Achaeans refused Roman demands to release Laconia and several other city-states as punishment, the Romans waged war with the Achaeans, resulting in the dismantling of the Achaean League and the destruction of the city of Corinth.

Thus, Laconia has a mission tree to break free from the Achaean League after setting the necessary diplomatic and political foundations for revolt, including gaining loyal allies among the Laconian oligarchs, as well as sending a diplomat with some deep pockets to the Roman Senate.

Thus, the Laconians basically have a mission tree to kick off the Achaean War.

Once preparations have been made, Laconia will receive certain buffs and declare a war for independence from Achaea.

Although outnumbered, if the Laconians can survive for 8 months without being defeated, the Romans will intervene and demand Achaea to release Laconia as well as Argos, Messene, Corinth and Elis.
Achaea has the choice to accept or refuse - they are more likely to refuse, after which Rome will join the war on the side of the Laconians. Even if Achaea refuses the initial demands, Achaea will still be broken up by the Romans following the conclusion of the war.

The mission tree can be completed when Laconia is completely independent. Now freed, Laconia will have access to a mission tree allowing for the restoration of the Spartan monarchy.

With a much weaker Achaean League and city-states ripe for the taking, the seeds for Sparta to once more reign over the Peloponnese have been sown…

    Thureophoroi Unit Models
  • 1649981197627.png

Another small update! Greek unit models have been changed to reflect the 2nd century BC.

Levies (light infantry) now use a new shield, the thyreos / thureos, which may have been inspired by similar oval shields used by the Celts in the Galatian invasions, or perhaps by the Italians' scutum shields. Light infantry units using thureos shields were known as thureophoroi, and they were equipped with spears as well as javelin projectiles. The Greek and Hellenistic armies had mostly chosen to adopt the thureos by the 3rd century. These units were also much cheaper to maintain. So, in-game, the thureos is replacing the pelte shield used by levy units in the vanilla game (which had represented peltasts).

However, by the 2nd century, most Greek city-states as well as the Hellenistic kingdoms favored the Macedonian phalangites over the thureophoroi. So, Greek legions (heavy infantry) use the circular Telamon shield, which is smaller than the circular hoplon shields that the Greek legions use in the vanilla game. The Achaean League is one of these states that made the shift, and by 150 BC most of the smaller Greek states had transitioned to using mostly the Macedonian phalanx.

    Child Rulers and Regencies
  • Dev Diary: Child Rulers and Regencies

Hello all, I'm here with another update!

A mechanic that I have added to the mod involves Child Rulers and Regencies.

Historically across the world, a child on the throne rarely marked a stable utopia. Pretenders would plot against the weakened position of the monarchy, mothers would overthrow their own child rulers for power, and regents would have to be appointed to serve and govern in their place. One example of this is when Queen Laodike Seleukid of Pontus, mother of Mithridates VI, served as her teenage son's regent when her husband was poisoned. She then attempted to poison Mithridates VI, causing the boy to flee from the capital. This event is also modeled in the mod.

To simulate this, a new 'Child Ruler' modifier will be activated if the ruler of any monarchy is not yet an adult.

In order to alleviate the negative effects of having a child ruler on the throne, the player can enact a Decision that appoints a Regent to assist the child ruler and govern in their stead, temporarily adopting the 'Regency' government form.

    1655443314475.png
    1655443304642.png

Several potential candidates can be selected for the position of Regent: either the child ruler's Mother (if she is still alive or exists), the member of a Great Family who has the most powerbase, or the member of a Great Family with the most prominence.

The Regency government changes back to the previous government if the ruler becomes an adult, the ruler dies, or the Regent dies (at which point a new regent can be selected again). The Child Ruler penalties will also be removed once the ruler becomes an adult.

Just like a consort or co-ruler, the Regent will contribute their attributes, giving a weak or infant 0/0/0/0 ruler better stats to govern their realm.

However, Regents have loyalties of their own, and a disloyal Regent or one with unscrupulous traits may plot against the child ruler to seize the throne for themselves; a Queen Mother with more than one child may even wish to replace the child ruler with another, more favored child ruler.

Thus, there will be several events added that have a chance of triggering when a child ruler is on the throne, as well as several events related to regencies. AI will also have a chance to enact the decision if the ruler is especially young (less than 11 years old).

    Macedonian Missions and Andriskos
  • With an early beta version of the mod going to be released in a few days, here's a look at the WIP Macedonian mission tree that will be available. It involves the arrival of Andriskos Antigonid, who will restore the Antigonid kingdom over a decade after it had fallen in the Third Macedonian War with Rome, and will have over 30 mission tasks.
(You can ignore the typos in that event text)

Pontus & Carthage Missions + First Servile War
  • Hello everyone! The mod has received another update, which is out now.

Mission trees for Pontus and Carthage have been added.

Pontus' mission tree is focused on becoming the protector of the Black Sea Greeks, just as Mithridates V and Mithridates VI wanted. The tasks are also based on Mithridates VI's early conquests. Players will also be able to release Colchis as a client kingdom in the mission tree.
I am also planning on creating another mission tree for Pontus focused on the conquest of Anatolia and the removal of Roman influence in Greece.

Carthage's mission tree is focused on reestablishing themselves as the dominant power in Africa. This is primarily focused on defeating the Numidians and retaking former Carthaginian territories. Carthage can also dismantle the Numidian monarchy established by their rival King Masinissa, splitting the kingdom into two lesser kingdoms that look closer to vanilla Imperator Rome.

Once again, keep in mind that Rome will always intervene in Carthage's first offensive war.

Some other flavor events have also been added.

The most notable of these is the First Servile War, an event that can trigger for Rome if it has any unhappy slaves in Sicily during the 130s BC (which makes this crisis pretty much inevitable).

The Syrian slave Eunus has a vision that he is destined to become the king of the city of Enna after he leads a successful slave revolt against Rome. Thus, he puts this plan into action, triggering the first large-scale slave revolt that Rome would face in its centuries-long history. It is not long before slaves and freemen from across the island, including the especially talented slave general Cleon, are inspired by Eunus and join his uprising. Eunus declares himself the king of Enna, historically amassing as many as 70,000 to 200,000 slaves and freemen in open revolt against the Roman Republic.

Though made up of entirely light infantry, the slave rebels have high morale and are a formidable force, much more than an inconvenience for the Romans, just as they had been historically. Thus, Rome will likely have to shift its attention almost entirely on the rebellion if it wants to quickly win the war.

Also, just for fun, here's something I found while testing out this event, Julius Caesar's grandfather defeated by the slave rebels of Enna:

    2024 Updates and Numidian Flavor
  • It has been almost two years since the last update to Carthago Delenda Est, and I will finally continue updating the mod after having been busy working on other modding things.

While I hope to have new mission trees ready for the next update, it will most likely be first and foremost a flavor update to make the timeline post-150 BC a bit more alive, with things I've wanted to add for a while but never found the time to get around to adding them.

First off is a map color change in Italia, as the Roman Socii will now all be the same shade of red as the Romans, to make things a bit more aesthetically pleasing, (since the socii can still be seen individually in the diplomatic map mode anyways).

    1711233607253.jpeg

A big focus of the next update will be on flavor related to historical events in north Africa and several other regions, most notable flavor in Carthage and Numidia. This will include new events, decisions, and characters, which include appearing characters later on in the timeline.

Additionally, several events will trigger assisting the desperate Carthaginians in their wars against Rome and Numidia, based on the Third Punic War and the Numidian War.

One character that will gain greater prominence in the next build of Carthago Delenda Est will be a Numidian prince by the name of Jugurtha.

Illegitimate son of Mastanabal, the third son of the great King Masinissa, Jugurtha will have little opportunity to gain the throne of Numidia legitimately. However, there will be an opportunity for Jugurtha to steal the throne from his cousins as he did so historically, and several events will also model the relations the Numidians and Jugurtha had with the Roman Republic.

    1711232693274.png

    1711232726050.png

This is all for now; this post was mainly just to inform anyone who may be interested that updates will be coming to the mod after a long hiatus. I hope to cover Jugurtha's Civil War and war with the Romans in further detail next time. Thank you very much to everyone who has tried out and played the mod!
