I thought about what could be done to give large planets their due recognition in the galaxy. I found a pretty easy solution by increasing borders based on the population size. The population of a planet controls the influencial area of the planet. This makes large planets have large areas, and small planets small areas once they were fully developed. It is quite obvious that this change would probably change your playstyle a bit. :)

I like the concept, but why would the size of a planet affect the reach at which a galactic empire can spread it influence through space? I think (if this could even be done of course) that a better way for the borders to expand would be general presence (such as space stations, mining stations, etc.) in the system were the colony lies.

The same way as large cities with better knowledge centers and infrastructure attract small towners of the whole country. The logic is the same for large planets vs. small planets.
