I had an idea to add agriculture as a resource, which would add some strategic depth, especially for a Germany game.

1. Reduce the IC to supplies ratio to simulate supplies as agriculture.

2. Add annual or semi-annual events that gives supplies to provinces which are agriculturally significant.

3. Reduce supply consumption for units?

4. Check if supplies is lower than amount/0, if so increase dissent.

Any thoughts or ideas?

cheers,

I think the idea is great, kl. I don't know that I'd subscribe to all of your follow-up points, but making foodstuffs a discrete variable could bring many more provinces into play as important resource areas.

if the ai could only trade properly, this could work
(or simply add off map supply productions for countries like YUG or BUL)
but somebody mentioned that ai trades in circles (downwards) so i doubt it could make use of it?

Actually, we have discussed this in the dev. team. It's a big thing to add, and not gonna be soon, but it's a concept we like. Watch future announcements...

Not sure it is a good idea, but it would defiantly add a something for a otherwise useless areas as Denmark for instance.

that would be cool indeed, even if it lasts but agricultural stuff and trade would be a huge improvement.

Supplies become ammo and equipment then, agriculture the food.

Unit out of supply: combat stats slowly reduce to 0.
Unit out of food: unit looses strength.

Historically, agriculture was quite important:
-Franco cited as reason for not entering Nat Spain on the Axis side, that he was too dependent on food imports.
-The dam buster's raid main effect was flooding large agricultural areas.
-The grain fields of the Ukraine were quite desired by Hitler.
-Countries like Argentina provided food for both sides of the conflict.

Hmm, food was not really all that important when it came to military operations in most places - if a civilian population is fed all year, feeding soldiers as well is usually not a big addition.

Food was an important strategic concern, however...

And you could add to that:

- the fact of UK food supplies coming mainly from overseas and thus the need for rationing in the war (and a major aim for the convoy raiders)

- the general stress placed on merchant shipping by war that meant that many, many countries had to produce more food locally at the expense of cash crops

- the fact that Burma was the primary source of rice for much of India, Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia in 1941...

So, yeah - big strategic effects, but with major mitigation actions that are tricky to model simply...
