Hi, is there any chance that this will be changed?
I personally liked to play mods in MP with HOI and I would like to play modded MP HOI2 as well. :(
Maybe most players play vanilla but as MP Mods worked on HOI shouldn't they work on HOI2 as well?
Thanks in advance,
Michiel

There was a similar problem with HoI 1 and it was fixed in the final Platinum Edition. I have logged the problem for HoI 2 but can't say when it might be resolved. I don't consider it a high priority myself because there's an easy workround - make a copy of your standard installation and mod that.

Well I'm "miffed" about this because I provide tech support to a lot of people who have a ton of trouble copying files. Yes, I'm tempted to say anyone too stupid to be able to copy files shouldn't be playing a game like HoI but it's not a matter of stupidity. One of my best friends (and a potential HoI player) is like this. To have this problem literally means that I need to drive over to his house and set it up for him!

I've been in contact with entire "communities" of would be HoI multiplayer groups except that stock Paradox HoI 2 v1.2 isn't even considered "playable". Well, I'm going to shut up now because there is no point in further "bashing" or negative comments.... mutter... mutter... {whispering under my breath} what about all those threads touting how great MP HoI is and how pitiful single player is in comparision...

It is not an "easy" workaround. It is a major pain in the ass workaround. It greatly limits the number of people who might otherwise try a mod. I suspect you don't consider it a major concern because you personally have no interest in a mod. Perhaps others do.

I am as dismayed as Mithel. When I read the readme.txt, I assumed it had been fixed, since it is listed as one of the changes. I guess there are certain things one should never assume.

Consider me as "agitating."

Sure it is. I've often had four or five versions of HoI on this machine concurrently, e.g. I had HoI 1 CORE as a separate install. You just copy the entire directory tree and make whatever changes you want to the copy. Then set up a shortcut to the hoi.exe program in that copy and you're good to go. The main drawback is the extra disc space required but that's no big deal now that hard drives are so cheap and large.

Of course, it would still be good if the moddir function worked as expected but, as I explained above, I've done what I can to bring that to the attention of Paradox.

"The main drawback" is that for Joe Public, setting up a shortcut alone can be a daring and novel experience. They may be able to manage to find where their game directory is (especially if you tell them the default), but cloning game copies and replacing files (simple as it is) can be a bit daunting.

It's not complicated, but its not what most gamers today are used to.

I respect that you've made an effort, but I have to agree with Mithel and HG that it does make a serious difference in accessability.

"Easy" is a comparative term. My idea of "difficult" is configuring a router and firewall so that you can play MP. Just trying to get things in proportion so that people who haven't tried this aren't discouraged.

....And speaking as a Joe Public....

I am feel quite out of my depth when I trying to do some of these "simple things like cloning game copies and replacing files."

To give you an example, I trawled through a basic and simple procedure like trying to install some of CPacks 88x44 Icons (see Stony Road forum) here:

http://www.stonyroad.de/forum/showthread.php?t=2217&page=14&pp=20

The plan was to load these into my game folder because I reckon that they look absolutely smashing....so off I went...piss-easy...downloaded files etc..etc... and totally buggered up my MP game files - they all changed from UPHQ (basic standard with Barkdregs manpower fix) to something else that blocked me from MP games.

Luckily some of my Aussie forum members have more of a clue than me......got it all fixed....but now I am too "gun-shy" to try and load up these terrific looking icons......

From my perspective, if this function can be fixed then please go ahead -- I love the Modded games -- I hear that CORE is not far off -- and I know that many played HOI 1 CORE mod in their MP games....

Errrrr....didn't mean to ramble on....but...get the picture...easy for one is not so easy for others..???

Cheers

Unbelievable! Even with v1.2 using the moddir feature it appears that HoI 2 is still bugged and won't work to play multiplayer. Why isn't everyone screaming about this? (Why isn't a warning stickied somewhere?) I can't even imagine playing multiplayer without HoI2 being modded!

yay?

Unfortunately it is a fact of life that what is "trivially simple" for some of us, is a gibberish nightmare for others. I have a good friend that loves HoI and plays regularly (multiplayer in my group). But although being a computer owner for over twenty years he struggles to comprehend how to copy files. He has mangled his install of HoI 2 several times now. That's even after I specifically told him to make a special copy for JUST playing our current multiplayer game. Knowing that my mods improve the game he happily loaded the next mod version (congrats to him on properly copying files!) and presto... new version codes that render it incompatible. Argh. HoI2 is not user friendly for multiplayer.

So there really are two issues for multiplayer:
1) Version compatibility codes require that a player is very careful to have an install that matches everyone else they are playing with.
2) moddir doesn't work thus requiring copying the game.

and 3) de-sync issues are severe and force you to run multiplayer at slow speed settings.

It's a receipe to insure that multiplayer (the best part of the game) is only played by a few customers.

Granted. So, given the current state of the game, why don't you prepare a script/installer for your mod which will set it up in a consistent way that works for MP play? I've no idea when the moddir problem might be resolved so you might be better off working around it.
