A criticism some have made of the cardinal seat system is that religious influence is quite nebulous and perhaps even odd, with far more input being done at the country-level than through Papal politics. And although I am sure this area could be expanded upon greatly, without changing the whole system, I have two minor additions which I believe would add an extra layer of dynamism to politics with the Papacy:
1. Pope death reduces religious influence significantly, scaled by relations with the pope.
This simply makes sense, as the Pope is ultimately the one responsible for appointing cardinals. And while religious influence is an alright abstraction, adding an extra layer to the fact that the Pope is at the end of the day in charge, and your 'influence' with him will die with him, this just makes sense to add some extra factors to take care of.
2. Add a peace option when at war with the Pope called "Establish Influence." Although I am not an expert, from my understanding many Popes were cowed through military force by secular rulers. This would help give the player more possibilities to accumulate influence, and add for some interesting extra dynamic politics in Europe.
