I haven't played in a long time, but the last game I had a Mohole mine and it produced so much metal I didn't know what to do with it all. I kept building storage, but the surplus was getting massive. The darned thing was stopping rare metal production because the regular metal storage kept getting full. Wished there was a way to stop metal production while continuing rare metal production.

Is this still a problem? Or was I missing something and it shouldn't have been a problem?

They added Storages to the game a while ago, which allow you to store (I think) 4000 units of a given resource. Much less of a problem having a couple of these for the metals than when you had to deal with Depots only (180 storage).

I almost always face the mohole's entrance/exit into 1 tile "road of powerlines" followed by 2-3 metal storages which are faced at the mohole. You just #2 and #3 when you need them, but leave space for them. Put little drone charging station in the gaps between them. You can put a rare metals too, but keep in mind that you won't be storing that many of them.
Having very small distances for drones to carry resources makes the world of difference. I also recommend placing your machine parts factory super closeby - take note of where the entrances to the dome is. While I love me a mega dome, the mega trigon has a much better drone flow opportunity.

I find storages don't work well when you have a lot of throughput, so I go for a row of depots. But I'll turn one or two of my landing pads into trade pads, trading metal for polymers, most of the time. Or occasionally food or concrete, but I usually have enough of both of those.

Slow transfer but large capacity is indeed the downside of storages. I has a very small fast storage area and the very slow large storage area. The slow part transfer goods in chunks of 6 or 8 to/from the fast area. I believe even shuttles have only access to the small fast area
