Is it possible (and how do I do it, is there a tutorial) to move a province or provinces around the map? Like if I wanted to move Majorca, Menorca, Malta and the Sicilian provinces into the area of the English channel and move the English channel area into the Mediterranean effectively joining England to the continent. Would I need to modify the text files to do this? (to give them new neighbors as they fit into the new map)

Thanks!

No, you will need to edit the map for that

Here is a guide on how to edit the map

Trying to remake the entire map as Britain

I'm asking because I'm thinking of finally pushing through with a War of the Roses/Tudor period mod I've been wanting to do forever. The period of play will be from around the mid 1400's to 1546 - from the period just after King Henry VI married Margaret d'Anjou to the reign of Edward VI. The provinces in the original game will become manors in England. The hierarchy will then become Gentry (untitled) - Nobility (titled) - Royalty (ruling). There will be other states and kingdoms represented but these will retain provincial/major city size - mainly because foreign interaction is part of the period and the King of England should be able to marry someone of appropriate rank.

The map will be converted thus:

Great Britain and Ireland = The West Country (Cornwall, Dorset, Devonshire)
France and the Netherlands = The Midlands
Spain = Sussex and Kent
Italy and the Balkans = East Anglia
Germany and Denmark = Wales
Scandinavia = Ireland
Poland and Eastern Europe = Northern England and the Border
Russia = Scotland
North Africa from Morocco to Tunisia = Northern France and Netherlands
Tripolitania to Syrte = The Spanish road
Egypt = Spain and Portugal
Palestine and Arabia = France and Burgundy

Asia Minor I plan to move out and other provinces will be transfered to the continent to flesh out the Britain map. It's like in these board game maps where they have boxes that represent 'France', 'Burgundy', 'Spain', etc. This way, the English monarchs can still launch expeditions to conquer France or request the hand of Catalina de Aragon and actually be able to manuever on a province level map.

The game will be played at the family level - I think CK is the only game that can properly simulate the inter-familial feuding of the period based on inheritances, power politics and private armies. The period is fun to play also because it's a time period where a family can go from utter obscurity to being the power behind the throne within the space of a single generation - just think of the Nevilles, Woodvilles, Brandons, Seymours and Dudleys - families that would go from nothing to almost everything in what seems like a fortnight. If ambitious reaching for the top isn't a player's thing, there should be plenty of interfamilial feuding to keep things fun - many families would compete for various manors or offices such as Sherrifdoms or other state offices - these will be handled like Dukedoms (ie. along with titles like Earl of Warwick or Duke of Norfolk, offices will be available for creation attached to certain manors/castles/towns, such as Warden of the Cinque Ports or Warden of the Northern March). Parliamentary favor and influence will be more abstracted through the use of events.

Well that's the plan behind the request. It's quite naturally a long term thing but if I can get the Europe map to start looking like a large map of Britain that'll be a good start.

Many thanks in advance!

If you are really, really nice and have some preliminary designs; I might be able to help you make a new map and also do some video tutorials. But after that I will have to return to my own mod. Understand, I make no promises... but I might have some extra time.

Changing the map is a rather long and complicated process.

I appreciate the offer of help =)

Its been a dream mod of mine for a while but I've been so busy - and I still am - with real life lolz that I've not been able to get to working on it. I'm actually looking at a mid August start date for the map modding proper, right now I'm researching the people and places. I also need to figure out how to hex edit the CK DV exe to push the time limit beyond 1452 or all of this is just spitballing. I'm thinking I'll take a bunch of the characters from the Hundred Years War scenario and make them the 'ancestors' of the characters you start with.

What I would appreciate though is if you could give me a bit of a start - could you do a very small workable one or two province map with just two opposing characters/dynasties? I've tried removing the characters/dynasties but I always get a crash. If I could start 'clean slate' so to speak then I think I could handle it from there.

Many thanks!

Here's an idea how detailed the map should go

http://freespace.virgin.net/sheldon.stevens/map.gif

This actually doesn't have all the manors I've read about so there'll be a few more places added but this is what I'm hoping to go for except it'll be turned on its side with 'boxes' for Calais and Normandy and Burgundy that link up to the Northern French Provinces, while the 'north africa' area becomes Spain and mainland France/Burgundy.

omg, the hex editing thing worked!

Wow, I never thought it would - Thank you sooooo much Jdrou!! Now I can start experimenting with the files.

Quick question - what are the BARE MINIMUM requirements for the game to work without crashing? Two dynasties plus the Pope? Like if I delete all the characters in the game and then just make two dynasties with one character each, one title per character, plus a pope, will that work? I want to start from scratch and work forward from there.

Thanks!!

All provinces must be owned. So creating just a single character who owns all provs is enough.
The Pope will be created by event if he does not exist and a Catholic owns Rome or one of the other provinces he can appear in.

Ahhhh! That'll work =)

Okay =) That'll work out if I make the character King of England since he'd have claim on everything anyway. Then as I make characters I can parcel things out.

Quick question - is it possible to have a Christian female character created in a Muslim dynasty? If you create them via event can you make them have a Christian religion? Or do they get stuck with the religion of the region? The reason I ask is because I want the mod to have the English as the 'Christians', the Archbishop of Canterbury as the 'Pope' and the Muslims as the 'Foreigners' with a 'Deus Vult' meaning resumption of the war against France (ie. "His Grace, the Archbishop of Canterbury preaches a sermon calling for a war against the French") but I want it still possible for the character to marry a 'foreign princess' (like Henry VIII marrying Catherine of Aragon or ANne of Cleves). Or would it be better if I made the Muslims just pure heretical characters or removed them entirely from the game? I wouldn't know where to place them in a game on the Wars of the Roses unless to make them like pagans/heathens/Cathars/heretics/Lutherans (lolz). The mod should span the period from 1446 (after Henry VI marries Margaret d'Anjou and Humphrey of Gloucester gets into trouble for his wife attempting to 'bewitch' the king) to 1546 (after Edward VI succeeds Henry VIII) and possibly even later - it would be interesting to play Elizabeth I :)

Quite alright! I figured it out...

You can, apparently, have a Christian ruler of a Muslim state. I was going on a Crusade as the Duke of Brittany - later King of Egypt - and as part of that I got a lot of rivals to my Muslim adversaries. This one guy I got converted to Christianity and it turned out he was the major rival to this one Muslim kingdom I kept fighting against and because he was next in line they made him king (even if he had been actively supporting me against them). So they got an Arab Christian king to a Muslim kingdom.

The French, Burgundian, Spanish and Germanic kingdoms and principalities will retain their provincial size and as such will take longer to travel and have a much higher rate of attrition while the English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish 'manors' will be quicker to travel and cost less in attrition (I'm hoping that a certain 'trait' can be attached to the province size territories that will make them more difficult to navigate).

I've already started working on little changes in the game - Marshal is now 'Captain' while Diocese Bishop is now 'Chaplain'. Bishoprics are now 'Abbeys' while the pope is now the almighty Archbishop of Canterbury. To get around the naming conventions each office and title in the game (these for the most part will replace the 'country titles') will be titled 'His Grace' instead of 'Duke of' while the 'place name' will be the actual title, like 'the Duke of York' or 'the Captain of Calais' (so it'll read 'His Grace, the Captain of Calais' or 'His Grace, the Archbishop of York') while the counts will be reduced to 'Gentry'. Using the three different scenarios (Hastings, First Crusade, Hundred Years War) I've also been able to recreate the geneological chain from Rollo the Ganger to Henry VI, so things have been going quite well indeed.

Before going further in geneologies however I think that it would be a good idea to redo the map so that people can be directly assigned to certain locations. That'll probably take the rest of summer/fall.

Some suggestions I thought of while working on the mod include:

Overhaul finances - no more endebtedness and spending beyond one's means, even for AI characters.
Yearly payment of annual 'retainder' to one's courtiers aside from a 'signing bonus'.
More court interaction through various events (feasts, hunts, building projects, mercantile ventures, child-raising, scandal, etc.)
More available family members including extended family to ensure that any additional courtiers are servants or fortune-seekers.
More child-rearing and child-interaction events.
More wife-interaction events.
More church events.
Tournaments, feasts and fairs should be planned and paid for.
More opportunity for mercantile trading and investment.
More random events that provide interaction between courtiers.
Random quotes and verses that accompany random effects.
Reduce the numbers of troops - 1 gentleman with harness = 5 de maison archers = 5 hobilars = 10 livery archers = 25 peasant followers.
Reduce battle effects and troop costs.
Make accusations against people and have to defend against accusations: Bastardy, Witchcraft, Disloyalty, Treachery against the Crown, Adultery
As punishment for being found guilty, one can be banished, exiled, executed, tortured or fined.
Y Mab Darogan - The son of the prophesy - The one who will free the Welsh from centuries of oppression
The Hooded Man - The one who will free the peasantry from centuries of oppression
Prester John - The search for the mythic kingdom in the east where a powerful Christian monarch rules and will destroy the heathens.
Bastard Feudalism/Livery and Maintenance - Employing armed servants as private armies.
Collecting Things - Tapestries, Bibles, Illustrated Books, Armor and Harness, Horses, Dogs, Wines, Weapons, Guns
Gambling and Gaming - Play and bet on cards, tournaments, horse-races
Marriages between Courtiers - unmarried courtiers may seek to marry other unmarried courtiers dependent on prestige and money.
Borrowing Money when endebted - one may borrow from a variety of sources: peers, moneylenders, Italian bankers, wealthy merchants.
Borrowing from peers - they may gain a claim on your lands (put up as collateral) and/or they become your rival. Your Reputation also suffers.
Borrowing from heathen moneylenders - as in the current events, you may gBet heretic/excommunicated for dealing with heathens.
Borrowing from Italian bankers - gain Italian debt trait. You must pay back, with interest or risk losing heavily in Reputation.
Borrowing from wealthy merchants - gain Mercantile debt trait. You must pay back, with interest or be fined double what you owe.
Public executions of Traitors - a king you can order public executions of traitors at Tyburn or the Tower, while nobles and judges can order minor public executions. However all executions risk you losing Reputation and Piety and gaining traits like Cruelty, etc. - or gaining them if the person executed was unpopular!
Replace DIOCESE BISHOP with CHAPLAIN
Replace MARSHALL with CAPTAIN
Replace BISHOPRIC with PRIORY
Replace POPE with ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY
Replace PAPAL CONTROLLER with CAPTAIN OF THE FAITHFUL
Replace ORTHODOX with REFORMIST
Replace MUSLIM with FOREIGN CATHOLIC
Replace REGIMENT with FORCES/BATTALIONS
Replace BYZANTINE EMPIRE/EMPEROR with KING OF FRANCE

I really want to be able to simulate so called 'bastard feudalism' (Livery and Maintenance) and the interfamilial squabbling as well as the rise and fall of the various noble houses that so characterized the late Plantagenet and Tudor periods.

Another thing I noticed in a test game was the madness caused by Schitzophrenia tended to result in an Ivan The Terrible like outburst that would have the king kill his family members. I was wondering if madness could be more moderated in that (as happened historically) Henry VI would not recognize his family, most critically his heir during his madness.

Also, a major part of the politicking (related to the madness issue) are the accusations of Bastardy to damage the reputation of rival political figures. If Henry VI refuses to recognize his heir then this could lead to the child being 'Accused of Bastardy' or someone could discover a rumor about a leading noble that accuses his father of illicit relationships (for someone like Edward IV, who was quite a ladies man and made a lot of unwise promises to a lot of women this wasn't too difficult) which would then place the person's inheritance in jeopardy. Just thinking of all the legal and international wrangling that rulers like Henry VI, Edward IV, Richard III and Henry VIII had over heirs and legitimacy, I think it's important to have in the game.

Anyways, I'll keep everyone posted as usual. I'm really, really happy that Jdrou made that little bit of info on how to change the game end time available. That's really made things possible ;)

Inviting cousins

By the way, is it possible to make an event that has a 'cousin' or relative (ie. someone with your last name, in your dynasty) show up so they can be married off to someone in your court that you want to keep loyal?

Thanks!
Richard III

You can create events that give you courtiers, but you can't set their dynastie-name.

New Traits

Is it possible to make new traits (and the little button that goes with it)?

Of particular importance to this mod I realized is, for the British knights, the trait of K.G. = Knight of the Garter. And there are a few other things I'd like to tweak, trait-wise, as well.

You can only replace traits, and for this purpose DV added three user_defined traits meant for modding. Just edit the config files and updated traits.bmp to get it in-game, then write some events to give it to characters.

Ah! I see

Well three traits is better than nothing... I'm thinking at least one would be Knight of the Garter, another might be Rumored Bastard, another might be Reformist Leanings - those seem to be the most necessary ones. Others that I can think about can be worked into the existing traits I think.

Knight of the Garter - confers a combat bonus and a loyalty bonus.

Rumored Bastard - lowers the loyalty of vassals and can give a rival a claim to a title.

Reformist Leanings - instead of getting heretic/excommunication immediately this can happen. I'm thinking that the Orthodox Religion will be modified into Protestant/Reformist and instead of becoming out-and-out heretical one can develop into a Reformist. This can be triggered I think by critical religious thinking events/developments, by excommunication by the Catholic church or by doing an event that gets it in trouble with Catholicism (borrowing from moneylenders, wanting a divorce, etc.)
