When I go to play an internet game with a friend, the game crashes. When you enter the IP address and click join, the screen goes black and nothing works until I exit the game. Both of us are using patch 1.09. Any ideas what caused this?

What if you host?

Has this always happened, or only since what change or update?

Have you checked for updated lan drivers?

It happens when either of us host. We both got the game recently, so we have only tried it with 1.09. If there are any 'updates' besides the patches I don't know about them. Being only poorly computer literate I am only vaguely aware of what lan drivers are. :( *goes off to find out*

It happens to YOU when either of you host? Or it happens to whoever hosts?

Are there any messages associated with the crash?

Do either or both of you have firewalls installed, either in Windows or your DSL modems? If so, you need to open ports in the firewalls for EU2 to get through. There should be posts in the MP forum telling you how to do this.

Your Windows installation needs drivers to talk to various equipment inside the PC such as video cards, sound cards and lan cards. Drivers for those cards are provided by the people who make the cards, not by MicroSoft or Paradox. I'm suggesting you go to the web site of the maker of your lan card and see if they have an updated driver for you.

Whoever joins, actually. The hosting goes fine, but whenever one of us enters the IP address to join the game crashes. No messages of any kind, just a black screen. I have the firewall open on my end, didn't confirm about the other party though. And thanks, I shall try that, hopefully soon, though it might be a few days before I get a chance. :(

Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated. :)

I also have the same problem. Recently i wanted to play EU 2 over lan with friend (it was the first time i tried playing EU 2 online). On host machine everything is fine. On both computers i can host the game as Lan, internet or valkyrienet and select scenerio/rules/etc. But second computer, cant find any game on Lan, and when i try to join via valkyrienet or via ip (internet) game crash (Host doesnt crash, only computer which is trying to join). Not to black screen, but just freeze without any error. Same happens when i switch host with computer that tries to join.

I thought that this might be a problem my pretty old CD's game, but same happens on my friends (Polish language version), expect that game doesnt crash, but after ~20 seconds displays error "couldnt find game under specified IP address". Same error was reported on one polish forum by other user and noone could help.

On varius patches (on english version 1.01/1.09, on polish 1.01/1.08/1.09) effect is the same (english version freeze, polish display error).

Both OS are Windows XP SP2, one is notebook. Firewalls and anti virus software are turned off. Other games work perfectly fine over lan :(

I'm as sure as I can be you have a firewall on somewhere. XP SP2 has it's own firewall, and if you have another one like ZoneAlarm that needs to be off as well. And if you use an ADSL router there may be one in there too.
