5 happy swedes set out to play a game of war, conquest and high drama set in the time when young european nations struggled to end the dark ages and bring reason and enlightenment to the world.

This was harder than I thought, as when you get bored, there's nothing funnier than starting a war or two.
Human nature? Crazed gamer? You tell me, since I don't know. (Would you know it if you were insane?)

Anywoo. First things first: Don't ever play the GC on 1min = 2months timesetting. BOOOORING.

I guess you could play a shorter scenario this way, but there ain't no way in hell I'll play a GC with that speed again.

That being said, there were no problems with lost connections or crashes for me. However, two of the other players had problems with frequent crashes.

I think this is more a problem with the configurations of their computers than a problem in the game. I guess you could say that EU is jumpy and nervous about competition when it comes to resources, but knowing this, you simply turn off such applications as for instance 'ICQ' (It WILL crash your game.)

I'm on a 500mhz PIII with 128megs of ram and a 10mbit connection so I fare well in the hardware department.
Windows 98 is a bit fickle though, so I will try running it on Windows 2000. Does anyone know if this works well?

Gameplaywise: IMHO, don't let anyone pick poland, france or spain as they are simply too powerful for a fun game. As Poland, I ripped the Golden Horde to shreds, thus stopping the expansion of Russia, gaining a valuable goldmine and leaving the ruskies with little defence against my next move: Doing the same to mother russia and then having the run of the place (at least eastern europe..).

All in all, an interesting experience and a fun game.

[Negative critizism warning!!] (I.e if you can't handle someone saying anything negative about this game, don't read further, it will only end in flames..)

The most prominently irritating thing is the starting of the game! It took 5 people a good 30 minutes before we could get the game going, as someone had to start a server, tell the rest to pop in a few minutes later and invariably do something wrong which makes a big mess of everything, and having to start over again.

As everyone had to quit ICQ to facilitate a smooth gaming experience (duh, no crashes, that is), it took a while to get togeather again and start talking to make another go at playing.

This could be helped by simply using some sort of service like for instance mplayer. 'Simply' might be the wrong word here, but it sure would be nice. :)

Enough rambling. I'm done.
Flame away.

I can't really get a game going with one person as my co-player, crashes to the desktop without rhyme or reason all the time. It could be because AIM is the backround, I suppose. Also, did anyone play minor nations? I'm wondering how well editing files with minor nations works in EU.

It rocks...

...in multiplayer..

Playing with 2 players is no problems and it works very fine even on dial-up connections.

3 players are still playable...

4 players or more is getting a bit rough... The game is a bit instable, mostly due to the fact that you can't alt-tab your self around. In MP games that is a must....

Also the fact that restarting a game is rough.... Compression of saved games to make a faster restart would be great (zip makes a 2 Mb save file to about 200 kb)....

I really hope that Paradox make some efforts on this, since this game IS a MP game....

John_Keats: Turn that vile app off! Really. You should turn any app off that runs in the background and actually tries to DO anything since it _will_ crash your game at one point.. :)

Bmolsson: Since the minimum reqs for this game connectionwise is 512kbit/s, I reallly don't think the issue with the savefiles is a problem. If it takes 20 seconds or 5 seconds, is the difference really THAT big?
I guess it would be nice if Paradox fixed this, but I wouldn't put it on top of the MP priority list.. :)

Stability is far more important and what I would like to
try is if we started a game where all the players have at least 2mbits. Will the game still act funky and crash for some of the players?

Oh, and I forgot one important point: I ran the german version whilst the others ran the swedish (including the server). This might have done something to stability, but I doubt it, since I wasn't the one crashing. Also, at one point, I ran the german version with the IGC installed. This created some strange results (namely serbia being annexed by spain in ibera, anno 1492.. :) ) but did not crash the game.

Agreed.

I might have time this weekend for another go. :)

Next monday I'm going to Norway though, which means no EU for more than 2 months.

Woe.

WOE!
