5 happy swedes set out to play a game of war, conquest and high drama set in the time when young european nations struggled to end the dark ages and bring reason and enlightenment to the world.
This was harder than I thought, as when you get bored, there's nothing funnier than starting a war or two.
Human nature? Crazed gamer? You tell me, since I don't know. (Would you know it if you were insane?)
Anywoo. First things first: Don't ever play the GC on 1min = 2months timesetting. BOOOORING.
I guess you could play a shorter scenario this way, but there ain't no way in hell I'll play a GC with that speed again.
That being said, there were no problems with lost connections or crashes for me. However, two of the other players had problems with frequent crashes.
I think this is more a problem with the configurations of their computers than a problem in the game. I guess you could say that EU is jumpy and nervous about competition when it comes to resources, but knowing this, you simply turn off such applications as for instance 'ICQ' (It WILL crash your game.)
I'm on a 500mhz PIII with 128megs of ram and a 10mbit connection so I fare well in the hardware department.
Windows 98 is a bit fickle though, so I will try running it on Windows 2000. Does anyone know if this works well?
Gameplaywise: IMHO, don't let anyone pick poland, france or spain as they are simply too powerful for a fun game. As Poland, I ripped the Golden Horde to shreds, thus stopping the expansion of Russia, gaining a valuable goldmine and leaving the ruskies with little defence against my next move: Doing the same to mother russia and then having the run of the place (at least eastern europe..).
All in all, an interesting experience and a fun game.
[Negative critizism warning!!] (I.e if you can't handle someone saying anything negative about this game, don't read further, it will only end in flames..)
The most prominently irritating thing is the starting of the game! It took 5 people a good 30 minutes before we could get the game going, as someone had to start a server, tell the rest to pop in a few minutes later and invariably do something wrong which makes a big mess of everything, and having to start over again.
As everyone had to quit ICQ to facilitate a smooth gaming experience (duh, no crashes, that is), it took a while to get togeather again and start talking to make another go at playing.
This could be helped by simply using some sort of service like for instance mplayer. 'Simply' might be the wrong word here, but it sure would be nice.
Enough rambling. I'm done.
Flame away.
