I've played entire games with people on dial-up and I didn't find out they were on dial-up until later. You just have to make sure that the host is near you geographically and not too many players are in the game.
Really? Well that's good news. I mostly play (other games) by Email and as I've recently moved don't have DSL yet.

I get good ping rates to US and Australia, though. Europe is another matter of course.

I think playing with Australians is your best chance even though it can be a trifle difficult to find a stable host there. If you have a good computer your chances for better play are increased. What are your specs on it?
My machines are always just about the latest spec, no worries there.

Just played my first game - with Europe!
Didn't experience much lag and had no complaints from other players.
So the news seem good if you are on dial up.
