The MP forums have been a little quiet lately, so I thought I would try to get some discussions going. As anyone that has played MP can tell you, it requires a whole new set of strategies than were used in SP. So, what are your general strategies for newbies or players unfamiliar with playing as Japan?

bump

Did you just bump this thread to improve your post-count?

Anyway, one minor point about Japan. Since you are a democracy you cannot just DoW on nations until late 37, so joining the Axis is a good strategy if you want China early...

No,

I noticed the German and UK strategy boards were getting heavy comment and instead of writing a "new" Japanese strategy question I just bumped up Bigglesworth's. I don't particularly care about post count.

Japan is a little bit dificult to play even in single player if the USA are in game ( at war :) ) .

I've only experience from single player games but I think its transferable.
You need a bunch of defensive ( inf in my case ) units to secure all borders and beaches.

Yeah and then there is the question of targets:
- North ( USSR)
- South ( Nederlands and Australia)
- West ( India)
- East ( USA )
or combinations of these

You need a large but cheap fleet ( cruisers destroyers and subs)

Spocky

Assuming you have joined the Axis or Comintern in early 36, and don't feel ready to tackle Nat. China just yet, it might be nice to take Siam by an amphibious landing (Just ask Germany/Russia to DoW them). The resources will be nice to have (especially the rubber), and you can threathen the Western Allies with your new border (helping your European allies)

What's the best defense against a mainland invasion?
:D

Knowledge. You just have to know when and where invasion is coming.

Guarding the beaches is innefective. Mainaining army in Japan is not-so cost effective than patrolling seazones nearby, either by air or small naval groups of submarines, destroyers.

A good strategy for Japan, in my experiences, depends on what the alliances are.

If USSR is involved, but is tied down in Germany then its not all too complicated.

I always have success by cutting the Soviets off and forcing his armies to fight by being surrounded. I usually net about 20-30 SU divisions destroyed, which is a death sentence if Russia is at war with Germany. However, if Russia and Germany unite, then its usually a moot point. People tend to pay more attention to Germany than Japan and that works to Japans advantage.
