The MP forums have been a little quiet lately, so I thought I would try to get some discussions going. As anyone that has played MP can tell you, it requires a whole new set of strategies than were used in SP. So, what are your general strategies for newbies or players unfamiliar with playing as the Soviet Union?

Well, something many USSR players forget is that each time you declare war your dissident rises by 10, and your IC goes down by 10. This makes taking several nations pointless in 36, as the Purge events (Which lower dissident by 10) appear first in 37.
However, taking Finland, Sweden and Lithuania (I think) is worthwile already in 36. Poland is also nice, and Romania, but that might "slightly" piss your enemies off...

Before "big war" SU should get Finland and lithuania (to prevent Germany to annex all baltic states and start war in good position to take leningrad).

Then i think the key is Turkey. SU shouldn't let Axis get all turkey (in MP Axis always try to take turkey).
Turkey is strategic for the allies and SU too. From Turkey Germany can conquer all middleeast even when not at war with SU. ANd when they attack SU, they are so near oil fields..

When i play SU i always attack turkey as fast as i can. Most of times, Axis attacks it too and we split it. But at least i keep them far from oil fields (and defending in turkey is easier, it's all rivers and mountains).

Then, develope industry and defence in borders and raise a big army fast.

Whenever I play Soviets, I tell the Axis that if they attack any of my neighbors, I will declare war on them. It usually keeps the Axis away from Poland, Romania, Turkey, and the Baltics for a good amount of time. And if they do DoW any of them, you know that they have bad intents for you.

Exactly what I do. Though I never attack any of those countries. Rumania is quite easy to influence and to get as an ally. The Finish are more stubborn, so normally I don't bother influencing but coup them.

Annexing them just gives a few IC, puppeting gives too much dissent without IC gain. But if you get them as allies you get very valuable troops. In my current game as SU the Finish saved my butt at the north front more than once.
