Hi. My friend recently bought HoI2 complete and we were looking forward to playing together. However, when we do manage to connect (sometimes it can't find a game through direct IP), the times and dates differ wildly, such as I being in March and him in January. We've tried directly and over hamachi with similar results. I've forwarded my ports but he's rather hesitant because he's not technically savvy. If we're connecting could it still be a problem with the ports?

Thanks

PS: The last time I played multiplayer was with another friend over direct IP, but this was when we were both on campus at uni. I have also played other games without lag over Hamachi.

Sorry for bumping this. I have the exact same problem, haven't found an answer in the main threads so far.
I can always start the game, it always goes great at first. Eventually, whoever isn't hosting starts lagging behind untill we are playing in diferent months. Is this normal? Can it be solved? Does it affect player vs player combat? I once read somewhere the history log slows the game, is this causing the lag?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Lag happens because the speed of the connection can't match the gamespeed. On Hamachi, lag is far more common than outside it.

So if you want to play with less lag, your friend has to open the ports or play HoI 'Lag Edition' forever.

As for the game, if you want to avoid lag, play with a slower speed. The game starts to lag more as the war progresses, aka more units are added to the game and so on. It isn't normal to be months behind the host, nor is it good for the game. You should select the speed, so that there is no lag at all. Or at least limit the lag to a couple of hours minimum.

There is a considerable impact depending on your location. If your friend lives next door, rather than on the other side of the world, you can play a lot faster.

If we are speaking of the average distance, aka the player is in your country/continent, a good speed for peacetime is above normal/fast, although normal isn't too unusual either. During the wartime it's above normal - below normal. If the speed needs to be slow, you are either playing in the 1950s, or your connection is simply too slow. :D

Never heard of the history log thing. Though in AoD there is a lot more data in the game and on the save, it slows down everything...
