ok, this feels like a really stupid question, but I checked the manual, looked and looked (getting sidetracked for hours reading various threads that caught my attention) checked the manual again, and experimented with different things and nothing seems to work...

When I'm trying to select two specific commands out of a stack (like in order to swap divisions between them), if I use sprites I can shift-click the health bars below the sprite (as the manual says). But I play with counters and when I try to do this, all it ever does is select and deselect the same unit over and over (if I try to select the whole stack and deselect units from it, then it does the same thing, occasionally it will deselect a second unit but no more). Shift clicking in the sidebar doesn't seem to accomplish anything for multiselecting, it just jumps to the clicked unit as usual.

It's seriously maddening that such a minor issue is frustrating me and wasting so much time.

Here is how to do it with counters:

With your mouse, draw a box around a stack or multiple stacks. Do not left click on the province; you do not want to select the province view or you will encounter the same results you've already had.

Now you should have one or more stacks selected in the left sidebar window. And you can de-select units out of the stack by doing a shift-left mouse click; that will allow you to remove units one by one out of the stack.

Here is an alternate method, if you are working with just one stack.
Left click with mouse to select one unit in province.
Next, hold shift key down, and draw box around all units in province.
Then, do the shift-left click to remove units one by one out of the stack.
Note, this method allows you to work with land, air or naval units.

Hope this helps.

I seriously feel like an idiot now; I was in fact selecting them as a stack, not looking at the province view, but apparently I must have been CTRL-clicking instead of SHIFT-clicking, causing the single unit to be selected just like a normal left click. I guess it's probably because I'm used to using ctrl-click when selecting/deselecting multiple files one at a time in windows (as opposed to shift-clicking to select a group). I went back and did what you said (which is what I *thought* I had been doing) and it worked fine.

That'll teach me to play late at night, obviously my brain wasn't working properly :eek:o
